Rethinking car Hire- Not sure

We are DVC members and have been many times. We have never gone without a car and always use it mainly to do groceries, eat a few meals offsite and visit Universal.

We had a late change to our trip. We are going Easter 2016. We were supposed to be doing East and West flying from Brisbane (we are there temporarily) to LAX staying 5 nights at VGC, then flying to Orlando for 4 nights at AKV, 3 nights aboard the Dream then finally 4 nights at VGF. But Expedia messed me up they have moved my flight from LAX to MCO back to the day we arrive in LAX giving us no time in California. I start to fight it with them but was just getting a confused mess of answers and we started to think more time in Orlando might be nice so we eventually decided to swap 5 nights at VGC for 5 night at BCv and just enjoy WDW again.

Anyway i had two hire cars books 1 for 5 nights at DL and 1 for 11 nights at WDW. I cancelled the 1 for DL and changed my WDW booking with Alamo to 18 nights and the price just trebled. I have had a good look around and can't see anywhere else cheaper. The car is costing $1350 and I'm sure we have never ever paid anything like that before

So I started thinking. When we are at BCV we want to do EPCOT and eat at Via Napoli, Beaches and Cream and T-Rex. At AKV we want to do AK and a waterpark and eat at Jiko and Sanaa. At VGF we are visiting MK and eating at Narcooses, Chef Mickeys, Kona Cafe and California Grill.

So it seems like the perfect trip to go without a car. We could book Magical Express, and a taxi to a couple of offsite meals and Universal twice will still costs a lot less than the car. We could do a garden Grocer order for food. ben a return transfer to port could cost less than the hire car.

I'm almost talking myself out of having a car. Any thoughts on how to get a car cheaper or does carless sound sensible?

Personally I wouldn't go without a car. We use it to go to the parks as well as when we head offsite as I find the buses take so much time and to me time is money.

As you aren't going until April 16 you have plenty of time to get a better price so I would keep looking.

Thanks I've actually managed to find one for 500 GBP on virgin holidays with Gold Insurance so we went for that. I'm concerned that the closer we get the more expensive it gets.

Weird that Virgin holidays was the cheapest I could find.

I used Virgin last month, they have been cheapest for many this year. Not sure but I think you can cancel with Virgin if you see a better deal. Often prices lower from time to time but you have to keep checking, although if its Easter holidays you might struggle to find better prices.

Having just been without a car for the majority of our trip, I'd say never again and always get a car when on WDW.

I was another that used Virgin this year for our 4 days - shopped around a lot and kept checking, and the price with Virgin was definitely a good deal.

Glad you are now sorted with a much better price.

Glad to hear Virgin were a good deal for others. I was shocked they were a good 300 quid lower than the nearest other quote I got.

It is weird only taking car hire tom Virgin holidays but it will work ok.

Thanks everyone.
