Which rides are okay for someone with motion sickness?

This is our family's first trip to Universal so I have very little to go off of. I've found Universal's rider's guide but I thought I would come to the boards to hear some personal experiences.

For background info: my mom is very prone to motion sickness. The only rides she can handle in DL/WDW are Big Thunder Mountain, Splash Mountain, Haunted Mansion, Pirates, Toy Story Midway Mania, and anything "kiddy." She gets sick in the car unless she's sitting in the front and even on airplanes sometimes. She's gotten sick from Tower of Terror and EXTREMELY sick from Expedition Everest (my dad won't let us live it down that we took her on that ride, oops :rolleyes1).

I was just wondering if anyone else who has problems with motion sickness can attest to any of the rides at US or IOA? I want to make sure she gets to at least ride something while we are there. I'm even hoping she will be able to ride something in WWOHP as we are both Potter fans but I'm thinking she definitely won't be able to ride FJ...

Anyways, just looking for some input so we know what she should avoid and what she should ride before we go!

FJ affects a lot of people........Gringotts doesn't seem to have the same issues. Flight of the Hippogriff in Hogsmeade is not too bad.....it's a kiddie coaster really.

I can do coasters, Spider-Man and the like and have no issues whatsoever, but the one that gets me is Simpsons. I was ill and had to be helped off first time.......lol....DH and the boy had no idea as they headed off the ride without me........I was green!

Will never go on again. It seems to affect a lot of people. I have a friend who is a manager in Studios and he says it's the one they have most comments about motion sickness on.

There is stationary seating on rides like Despicable Me and Shrek. She will be able to do ET too, it's simple and anyone can do it.

Have a look at the website for guides on every ride....will give you an idea of what is suitable for her......

Good luck and have fun.......

Yeah, I have heard that FJ and Simpsons are definitely not for those with weak stomachs. I'm actually a little worried about myself because the older I get, the more prone I've been to motion sickness. I cannot do anything that spins (tire swings, tea cups, and the like) but I'm still going to try every ride and just suck it up if I do feel sick. Lol.

I had not even heard about the stationary seating! That's awesome, good to know she can still enjoy some things :) Follow up question though: is it possible for her to get stationary seating and then for my sister and I to still ride the actual ride at the same time? Sorry, I just don't know what to expect!

I do have the riders guide saved, will have to go through it and take some notes :)

Thanks for your help!

Also: I'm a little hesitant to believe the provided riders guide because it's basically saying every ride will cause motion sickness, even the Hogwarts Express...o_O

I am also prone to motion sickness and have to sit in the front seat of our car, I feel her pain!

I can handle FJ and Simpsons if I close my eyes during the flying parts. I can not handle IMAX flying movies as they make me dizzy, but if I close my eyes during that part, then I am ok.

Spiderman and Transformers have a couple movie scenes that make me dizzy-again I just close my eyes.

Men in Black can make me dizzy when the car spins, but it stops quickly.

Okay, thanks so much for the feedback! A lot of these are 3D correct? She usually refuses to watch anything in 3D and I can't remember if it's because it makes her sick or she just dislikes it. Hah. I may need to have her make the final call. She's honestly just content being there and I think she'll love all the WWOHP theming but I would like her to enjoy some rides!

For Despicable me you will go in together but go in seperate lines once inside for seating but will exit in the same place, so no issues on separation. You won't lose sight of your mum.

There's a great photo op as you exit DM too.......the minions are usually waiting to dance and get pics......so much fun!

I can't do spinny rides either.......and yep, as I've grown up some more.....:rolleyes1 It seems to get worse........

Don't worry about questions......have a look at the Universal website and have a look through the boards......it's filled with a huge amount of information and anything specific there's lots of posters on here who will usually know the answer..........:thumbsup2

Every ride also has a chicken exit very close to boarding. FJ is in a Hogwarts, and the queue is amazing, and even going through Drangon's Challege queue at least once is great. (I was good with one time, but have done the FJ queue dozens of times because I am such a geek.)

I become incredibly motion sick, and can only do ET, High in the Sky Seuss Trolley ride, and being the HP geek that I am I got the nerve to try Gringotts and love it! Even if she doesn't like 3D, she should still go into those theaters to a stationary seat, close her eyes, and enjoy the AC for the length of it.

Even with being able to do such few rides, I love Universal- it's definitely my happy place!

Can she take motion sickness meds? Simpsons and FJ nearly make me hurl, but with half of one less drowsy Dramamine and I'm fine. She might need one whole one, though; I'm fine with anything at Disney (well, except teacups!! :crazy2:)

I take Bonnine, 3times a day and the night before we leave. Bonnine helps me with the nausea and dizziness. I am not a fan of all 3d movies, it's the flying scenes or falling or swinging movements.

FJ is not 3d, but it does have movie projections. Simpsons is 3D, a really good 3D, but some of the scenes are not good for me. Spiderman and Transformers are 3D, but have few movie projections, so I don't have to close my eyes much. Shrek 4D movie, a stationary seat would be ok.

All spinning rides are a no-no. I would never go on Twirl and Hurl (the Hurl part would be me!) No tea cups, Dumbo, Astro Orbitors, Storm Force Acceleration, Men in Black has random spins that do not last long, I can suck it up.

There are still some good rides/shows for her at US. Go through the queue and take the chicken exit as another poster said. The queue for FJ and DD are amazing and well worth the time.

I believe FJ has a queue for just looking at the castle too? Those are good suggestions! We can definitely have her walk with us and then bail at the last minute.

Also good to hear that you still can enjoy Universal without doing many rides. It should be a fun trip for us! Thanks! :)

She does take Dramamine, we actually just got back from buying it at the store :) but she gets so sick that she even needs it to fly on the airplane... I think she usually goes without when we do Disney so I might suggest she takes it when we go to the park and see if that helps her.

Same here, the teacups really do me in! :crazy2:

Do you happen to know if you plan to take the chicken exit if you can forego having to put stuff in lockers? I too get very motion sick and will probably not even attempt about half the rides at UO. But I plan to wait in the queues with my family both to see the awesome theming (first timer!) and so that I'm not spending half the trip alone on benches and in gift shops. But it would be really nice to just be able to hold on to my bag and not have to waste time at lockers when I'm not planning to ride. :)

I have never done a special queue for the castle, I just go through the regular line.

Yes. I have done exactly this. Usually one or many CMs stopped me in the queue and told us we couldn't carry whatever I was carrying and I told them I was just walking through with my husband and I would not be riding. They usually just waved me on, a few would tell us we should use the lockers anyway but most were nice about it.

Awesome! Thanks for responding. I was gonna try it anyway, but nice to know at least some of them won't have a problem with it. :)

Lol...Schumi sez "she's grown up"...

Simpson's is one of my son's top 2-3 rides in Orlando. Great, huh?! Trust me, Dramamine is consumed is massive legal quantities by this "aging boomer" WAY BEFORE boarding that one! I NEVER want to get motion sickness again!
It's been a few decades since "I fed the seagulls", but I think I made some kinda deal with God -(I'm SURE it was God, because Lucifer was piloting my boat!)

Lol.......grown up is a kind way of saying......."ageing boomer" :rotfl:

Love your last line........tag fairy would definitely have used that one...........lol..........

I take Bonine in the morning before going. FJ and Simpsons will make me sick without it. Even with it, I just barely make it through FJ.

Those are the ones most people seem to struggle with.........bonine works for me to a degree with FJ, but not with Simpsons. Everything else is fine...........

Welcome to the boards.........:wave2:
