Rumor: Next Tuesday is the last day for the Fried Green Tomato Sandwich

According to a person on reddit who claims to work at Hungry Bear the Fried Green Tomato Sandwich and and the Turkey & Provolone Sandwich are being replaced with a salad, a turkey burger, and a turkey wrap.

And I just decided to stay home and clean the house instead of braving race day crowds just to have one for lunch... Dinner time!
Even if it doesn't go away, at least I'll have dinner.

Hope that's not true :sad2:
I had it for the first time last week and I think it was the best thing I ate the entire week we were in DL. I still think about it daily haha.

I hope this isn't true especially as it's pretty ridiculous sounding- those aren't interesting menu items, and they have tons of burger places. I love this sandwich. I'm also skeptical as this is a vegetarian item, and all those items mentioned are not except possible the salad.

There's just no way this happens. It's one of the most popular things to eat at DL, per every Disney Board around. Everyone talks about it and for good reason - it's super tasty. Another reason is that a Turkey Burger will never fly. I mean...it's a turkey burger!!! Gross. And this can't be for health reasons. Is it healthier than a burger? Maybe. Healthier than a tomato. Nope.

Honestly, I've been eating burgers at Hungry Bear as far back as I can remember, even as a kid. I would be pretty mad if they changed.

I don't know if I should link to the comment directly, I guess it would be okay. They did mention that they were surprised that it is being taken off as it seemed to be one of the top sellers.

The tomato is breaded and fried, and then served on bread, so, no, it's not all that healthy. I'll be disappointed if they start going the way of salads at the vegetarian option again, but if they're adding a turkey burger I guess there will probably be an off menu veggie burger like they used to do at Taste Pilot's. I also think that the persistent rumor and internet search results that say that the sauce contains fish probably keeps a lot of vegetarians from ordering it, so I could see why they'd change the vegetarian offering if people are actually ordering the salad without chicken instead of the sandwich. If this means that there will be a gluten free dedicated fryer because they've gotten rid of the breaded tomatoes, then I guess that does add more options for another set of dietary needs, so that's at least a good move.

I've never tried the sandwich, but it will be sad to see it go if this is true. It's a unique sandwich at DLR; it hasn't even been around for that many years; and it is so specific to that restaurant and to that land -- as well as being highly popular. What's next? No more Bumblebee Cupcake?

AHHH! Don't give them any ideas.

As to the rest of your post I agree. These kind of unique items are great for guests to try, even if it is one time like the PB&J soda. Seems like Disney is slowly getting rid of unique food items.

2 seconds of research* shows a person that that was ancient news and changed almost immediately, so I would HOPE no vegetarians are still thinking it.

I'm disappointed. Turkey things? Salad? Sigh.

I was sad that we bought an AP in July and I'm even sadder now. I feel really really stupid for doing the AP. Should have known that with everything going downhill at WDW it would be the same at DLR. (worst trip we've ever had anywhere, this July...but we bought APs before entering the park the first time)

*that's about how long it took me the last time I looked into it...I didn't just go search to see...YMMV depending on one's google-fu.

In case you're wondering if it's OK on the Dis...the way to find out if a site has been blocked is to type it in, then clicked on "more options" then on "preview".

If it comes through just fine, it's not a blocked site.

If it comes through like this - xxxxxxxxxx.com - then it's blocked and you're not supposed to post it or do clever spelling, etc.

I hope this isn't true. We don't eat a lot of meat, and though I might try a turkey wrap I'd rather have the tomato sandwich. It's really good. They have recently tested out a lot of "unique" items at parties and things, it seems strange to take one of the existing unique menu items away and replace it with salad and turkey...there's a turkey salad at Flo's.

Yea, but realistically, most people are probably searching on their phone, in line, waiting to order or while exiting a ride and deciding what to eat. They read the highlighted text portion of whatever comes up. I don't know what terms they're searching, but I imagine it does dissuade some guests. Most guests aren't doing anywhere near the kind of research someone on a travel planning board does.

I also don't assume it's that popular, despite the fact that it's raved about on message boards. Most of my AP friends have never had it. I think it's a bad sign that a unique item is going away. I grew up in the era when every CS place had the same old burger on the menu. And I also went through the period where the only vegetarian option was a salad. I don't even know how many times in the 90s and early 00s that I are a pretzel while my friends got their dinner. At this point, if it does go away I hope it's because it's an expensive item and they'll replace it with someone with a higher profit margin. Because I don't want veggie burgers, pretzels and house salads to eat. If that happens I'll probably just plan visits between meal times, rather than buy those options.
