The last time they opened something huge, hotel occupancy exploded in the Resort district. As they get a handle on their parking situation it will become more feasible to add new Resorts. Maybe not this year or next, but by 2020 or beyond I wouldn't be shocked if they started moving in that direction.

When, where, and what was that?

If you go back and read the foce friday disney parks blog post, it was blowing up with comments. and they actually were answered.
Yes, still giving the free ($50) messenger bag to those registered, those people have a seperate line and will still be given access to shop first, a 2nd line will be set up for people that didn't pay. Tickets were sold, no clue if they only set aside a few, making it more "exclusive" but those are some lucky people that i'm sure will be more than doubling their expenses ebay this weekend.
No thanks.

my guess is they knew this was happening, had nothing to do with not selling well etc.. Those rabid collectors if in Orlando, or Anaheim would be sure to spend more than 50 bucks to shop, as I said before, go back and look at the Thursday before Star Wars Weekends thing they did the last 2 years, 300 bucks to shop.
But that was sold a little futher in advance, and people were already planning on going to SWW, this thing kind of just popped up.

No way this event was undersold. If you understand fandom and Star Wars you would know they could find hundreds (maybe thousands?!) in both Southern California and Florida willing to pay $50 for this event and exclusive Star Wars stuff. If I lived close to either, I would have paid. (I am going to our Disney store tomorrow morning at 5AM an hour before it opens.) The store is doing two queues one for ticket holders and one for non-ticketholders. If it was a handful this wouldn't be necessary. What happened was the exact opposite problem: Disney was inundated with requests. More than they could provide the perks to (like the bag). They simply couldn't fit them all in between midnight and 3AM. While exclusivity itself is a draw, or perk, in this case so many want to come they would have more unhappy fans than happy fans. The money they will make on toys outweighs the benefits of keeping the event small, making $50 a person, and leaving out lots of customers. So what is the solution? Simple: Allow everyone to come for free and extend the hours all night and through the next day. This will allow everyone to attend any time they want during the night. Disney is NOT paying CM's to work all night and keeping their store open all night because demand was low!

While it was a progressive growth strategy, the big moment when everything culminated was Cars Land in mid 2012. Throughout the Resort District, the District has seen all sorts of new hotels being built throughout the area. Room rates have steadily increased as well. The Resort District is about to go even more premium with a JW Marriott on the docket for the future. Like I said, really a longterm play but Cars Land got the most attention.

Ok...so you're talking about Disneyland and third party/real hotel operations.

That's a different story. I thought you were saying they're gonna start building disney run new moto lodges in wdw...
I don't see that happening anytime soon...or at all... For a number of reasons.

My bad.

It wasnt an "event"...it was admission to a retail store.

I call the customers dumb all the time...they've earned it, frankly...but there has to be a limit.

One thing I did notice about the "bigger picture" of this Star Wars release tonight...is that it's not as "big" as I or many would have guessed...

Toysrus is open everywhere...but walmart and target are very limited. Target had 207 stores opening at midnight...which is a fraction of their total stores...

I live in a heavily populated suburb of "affluent" means in the fifth largest city market and none of the 3 stores within 4 miles of my house are open... Same with walmart.

Now...I'm just reading the tea leaves a little...but I think the retailers are cautious on this more than the analysts think.

Why? My theory is that the most important economic market now for Star Wars - the gen Xers who played with the original toys and now have the families and represent the bulk of the income earning workforce...are still very jaded by and large.

I know I am and I'm still not alone. I was at a toysrus for the midnight toy launch in 99...I was in line in an abandoned major college town all day in may to see that steaming pile of dung we had all dreamed about in the pre Internet youth (the last generation)...and we were all exploited and the wound has not closed.

I think that's still a factor...not with the 50 year old convention geeks or 8 year olds...but the rest of us that have the most money/Incentive to spend on Star Wars now.

The good news is that I think Disney knows that and they have played it right so far...here's hoping they give me something to believe in.

I might head to the toy store if I'm up tonight...I would almost definitely go on amazon and probably go to Disney store/target for the early opening tomorrow - which makes me more dedicated than most - but they don't have my credit cards "burning a whole in my pocket" by any means

Bottomline: Lucas and Rick mccallum suck.

Howard stern said on air several times that perhaps the most disappointing thing he experienced as an adult was "after all those years, George Lucas couldn't make a decent Star Wars movie"

I mean...if Howard knows...the rest of us probably know.

You apparently have a lot of wounds that haven't closed. One industry guy noted that half of all SW toys are going to bought by and for adults. I'm one of those statistics. :) Decorations for my theater.

Not an event? Semantics. It isn't to you, it is to we SW fans! A bunch of SW a group unboxing with special merchandise and a few gifts. Belittle it all you want, it is an event. Don't call customers dumb just because you don't understand or share their likes and dislikes. What's a lousy 50 bucks to have a fun time with other SW nerds who love toys? You take it as a personal insult for some reason.

You have an amazing ability to twist anything to an impossible length to fit your negative predetermined view. Not a big event because only 207 targets are opening at midnight!! That's ridiculous!! And cautious retailers!? Sure is cautious to open 207 stores at midnight and pay all those employees just to hawk toys. And MOST of the BILLION Wal-Marts are included; many of whom are open all night anyway and ALL - say that again - EVERY SINGLE Toys R Us store!! That isn't cautious. And Target is doing a Saturday event, too. When was the last time that happened outside black Friday?! Has it happened on black Friday?! I don't think so. This marketing roll out is unprecedented and very much UNlike 1999. One of the reasons I am so glad Disney bought Lucas.

And after all that and you not being a SW fan, you're going to the store tonight!? I didn't see that one coming.

P.S. Some of these toys are your typical toys - aimed at kids - like a nerf shooting Millennium Falcon, but some like the flying Falcon and the BB-8 are pretty cool stuff. Also the line of quality figures are good too. I like the black series.

I am taking my Disney Credit card to the Disney store in the morning - I'm not doing the midnight stuff - then I'll visit Target, Wal-Mart, Best Buy. The rest of the toys will have to wait until I get the second mortgage on the house. First mortgage is for the 10 day trip to WDW the end of this month! I need a few SW shirts methinks.

Come on over to the Dark Side! Maybe if you asked, the Target within 4 miles of your house would do a $50 per person event and you could go!

On Friday, September 4, participating Target stores will open at midnight to unveil the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens toys. You'll be able to enter free giveaways and purchase these new items. Saturday, September 5, the saga continues with free photo ops, demos of the new toys, and additional giveaways.
Our store has a giant stuffed Chewy. He is so cute. If DD didn't have physical therapy at 7am, I would totally try to win him. Lol

Let me be short on this...

You missed 95% of the point...it was an observation/supposition based on what I noticed, not presented as an ironclad fact...the "we Star Wars fans" line was clueless (again...just self offered proof of a lack of understanding)...it wasnt negative at all - in fact just a recognition of a different approach...and it was complimentary of Disney EXCEPT For the ticket to world of Disney - which was stupid.

And 100% of toys will be bought by adults...mostly by the demographic that was the whole point of what I said.

I tried to be short...but when there's so much bad stuff in the speech...it's hard to be.

You know...you shoulda bought DVC 10
Years ago in your late 20's...after the Disney wedding...it would have helped with the 20 trips your 8 year old has taken...and you wouldn't have to get that second mortgage.

Just saying.

I think the American society has so drilled into us that we HAVE to have this or that that the Star Wars "events" are just a symptom of the disease of consumerism that has affected much of America, and unfortunately it's the norm whether it's black Friday or whatever. I am here at wdw but in the end decided I just don't need any of that stuff. I guess my Disney stock is going to get a massive boost, so I guess I should be happy.

(Of course this from a guy who would've spent $125 on an Adventurers Club sign today if it wasn't out of stock.)

umm first of all the first people to see a star wars film were the baby boomers not the gen xers. and we have more money to spend than he gen xers as well. and frankly I think lucas did a great job on all six films. Imagine haveing to write not one but three prequels in order to tell a story that everyone already knows. I think he did a great job.

The gen Xers (1969-1989) are those that have the attachment to the Star Wars toys and the vast majority of the merchandising.

Boomers (55+) are the grandmas and grandpas now...who certainly are an Important demographic...no doubt.

But the Xers are the moms and dads who control the majority of the toy spending now.

Lucas did an awful job on the screenplays, dialogue, acting, and the no limits to cgi.

There is a really hard case to present if you're going to say he did "a good job". Maybe they can still be enjoyed...but the product/work with a known backstory is frankly terrible.

And had Disney not admitted that? Abrams dumping the majority of cgi for live action shots and repeated reference to the "depth" and "feel" of the original movies. That is an indictment of the 90's garbage.

Lucas once state that he knew he could do Star Wars when the t-Rex came Into view in Jurassic park...

Did the gungans look like they pulled from that?

A good analogy is The Lord of the rings movies... Which raised the bar of what cgi could do and resulted in good movies. The hobbit? Out of control and largely terrible. Even if the story might have lent better in one case... Which is perhaps a bit of an excuse in Star Wars. But not a pass.

Whatever...I'm not "an SWfan"...so what do I know?

100% agree...nothing to add

(I would have bought the adventures club sign at the co-op for you and sent it to you back in June...you gotta let me know these things :) )

What? I need to see that....
I'm actually on my way to join you right now. I just keep waiting for some of the actual AC props to hit TPC or ebay.--- then my wallet will be in danger.
