Room upgrade

I'm always curious when people say they are hoping for an upgrade - out of the thousands of people who are paying guests, how many upgrades do you think actually occur - a lot fewer than these boards would make you think. If you want to upgrade, do it before you leave - it's a lot cheaper than trying to do it when you are checking in. Also, there a lot of people "celebrating" while they are at Disney - just have birthday/anniversary noted on your reservations. Ask them for a birthday button, but don't expect an upgrade as you may be disappointed.

Speaking of DVC resorts...

I booked the Poly Standard View DVC Studio for next month with my fiance only so 'couple' (on the ressie it has my birthday is that week and we are celebrating an anniversary) -- what is my chance of getting upgraded at check in for free or even a small fee more? Do I ask or do they suggest it?

p.s. not a DVC member - got it for the discounted rate.

If you rented DVC you will not get an upgrade (unless there is a problem with the room). You have rented someone's timeshare so you will get what you booked.

PP noted she got a discount rate on her room, meaning she paid cash through WDW.

We have gone on the platinum plan three times. People say platinum and premium plans always get upgraded, and we received only one upgrade in those three stays, and it was from magic kingdom view poly to club level magic kingdom view poly.

I think it had something to do with the concierge person who was helping us with our reservations, more then the plan.

It was not a suite upgrade, and we were on the plan that "supposedly" get upgraded all the time.

We got upgraded from a LM room to an AoA Suite in May 2015. It was a 5 night stay. I have two little pirates. We figured that we would stay in a LM room while they were little and didn't care so much about the girly feel. We checked in and were upgraded to a Cars Suite. The CM never said a word about moving us- just circled our room on the map. It wasn't until I walked away that I realized what had happened! I don't think I had done online check in that trip. My boys LOVED it!

At the contemporary, we were never upgraded.
At AKL, we were upgraded from a standard to Savanna, but I was pregnant and had a horrible migraine when we arrived and they put me in the first too, they could.
AT WL, upgrade every time. Book standard with adjoining rooms and got the two rooms under neath the club level suite. Very nice. We got woods views the other times and could see fireworks. I have never been upgraded to a suite or to another better hotel, but it has happened to close friends. How you check in has no influence.

I was upgraded to a royal room at POR once. I didn't do online check in and I arrived at 8pm. I guess they were out of the garden rooms which was what I'd booked.

I was upgraded from a room at All Star Music to a 1 br at OKW once. We knew about it before we arrived--there was an email asking if we would like to move to okw or ssr and we responded with heck yes. They had overbooked the rooms. It was for a whole week and we were not an adult only group.

I didn't realize all the walking there is at port Orleans riverside would they ever upgrade to a preferred room? I just don't want to be crazy far from everything :(

We were once upgraded from a water view to a preferred room at CSR but I think that was really due to the fact that our reservation was linked to our friends who was staying in a junior suite. If you want to guarantee being close to the building, you may want to think about paying extra and just booking it now. After staying preferred and being so close to the main building, I will gladly pay and book that category.

Happened for my sister and niece. Booked 3 nights at AoA, LM room, and they were upgraded to the suite. My sister said it was almost silly, just the 2 of them rattling around in a suite. Wish I'd been with them!

Honestly, the odds are slim for any upgrade. You can put in a request to be close to the main building, or the pool. That way you'll be as close as possible.

OP, book and pay for what you want. Don't plan on it being "given" to you.

If you are concerned about walking, I'd call and see if there were preferred rooms available and than change your reservation. It's cheaper to do before you leave then trying to upgrade at check-in

actually period good - even a discounted rate from Disney (not a trip using points rented from a DVC member) - that say it would only be to a lake view - if they have any available.
