Official 2016 Star Wars Half Marthon - The Dark Side Weekend

Has anyone heard anything about the host resorts? Like from a TA or someone who might hear before it is official? With a challenge I would think this would be like large race weekends and an every resort is a host resort race, but really no way to be sure I guess.

I am also planning on my first challenge with the dark side. and was also not counting on it being so early, but I just do not know how I could pass it up!! I have never been able to do an inaugural race.

I want to do the Dark Side Challenge. Plus its the first one so thats a bonus for me as well. Plus its during Flower and Garden & I loved that the one time I went before. Plus its almost around my birthday so I can use that for an excuse to go. Lots of pluses... lol.

Signing up for the 1/2...thinking about the 10K too. I'm a trail runner and can do the distance on the trails with no prob but road surfaces and my knees don't get along :scared: So may just do the 1/2. Does Disney ever release maps of the courses?

There are maps in the event guide which is released 2-4 weeks before the race weekend, but since this is a new race there are no maps from previous races to look at. I've heard people say it appears to be the reverse of W&D.

This might just be my first WDW race after 4 years of Disneyland races and I have a question for the WDW veterans...is it really important to stay at one of the "host hotels" so that I can use the resort transportation on race day? Is getting to the parking garage really as bad as the runDisney site makes it seem?
No parking garage - for the half I think we can safely assume parking will be at EP, since that's where the race starts and it's the largest lot. I imagine they'll then have buses to drive folks back from the finish at WWOS to their cars at EP. I often stay at non-host hotels for races and have no problem: I leave plenty early (whatever time the host buses start running? That's when I go, too) and know my way around well. I'm not sure I'd want to do it as an infrequent WDW driver, though; just one more thing to worry about.

So will every hotel provide transportation to the start line?
Not necessarily - all resorts are official hosts for Marathon and Princess weekends bu the other race weekends at WDW have been smaller and only a handful of resorts are hosts. My guess is this one will be about on par with a W&D or ToT race weekend, so likely not all resorts will be hosts.

Nothing but crickets so far...

So excited for this! I want to do the dark side challenge...doing Dopey in January but can't resist a Star Wars themed race!

Can anyone confirm that DVC members will also get the early registration opportunity like AP holders?

Based on what I read on the RunDisney website, I think the answer to your question is "yes". I pulled this directly from the Star Wars Half Marathon - The Dark Side website (under the "Registration" tab):

Early Registration Opportunities
Select early registration opportunities are available one week prior to official registration opening date for each race weekend.
Hope this helps! :)

I have to admit that I'm pretty stinking excited that a Star Wars race is being added at WDW. I've been wanting to Run Disney for a while, but I was never very athletic. Started running last year, feeling a bit more confident, and then they add THIS! YES!

I think we're both going to start training for the 10K. I'm a bit freaked out, but I'm hoping with a lots of practice (and a good bit of time), we'll be set to go in April. :)

Reading through this thread, I'm astounded by the number of people doing challenges! Wow! I don't feel confident enough for those 1/2 or full marathons, but I will definitely cheer on those who are (and those who are going all-out and doing all the things)!

You can do it!! I just started running in April but do mainly trails...prob 25 miles a week. I am considering the challenge but my knees hate road running. I am sure you will be ready by April. Worst case you walk some of it. The best part will be running in Disney and the theming. I have never done a RunDisney race either..was planning on Jan 2017 until this popped up. So excited :)

I am signing up for the challenge. I'm a runner but decided to give up my full marathon in November to save up for this race. Too many races with too many fees. I am hoping we will hear more information about this race soon. It seems very little information has been given except that registration will begin on September 22nd for the general public. Does anyone know when they typically announce what hotels are host hotels? This is my first RunDisney race so I am getting familiar with the process.

In my opinion for the hype that is going on everywhere,

AP & DVC sell out in 5 to 10 minutes.
General public sell out in 15 to 30 minutes.

I am in for the challenge.

Ok. This has become a sickness. I can't help myself with each race that is announced. I am already in for 2016 for the Marathon Weekend half marathon, the rebel challenge, the glass slipper challenge and the pixie dust challenge. Looked at this thread after work today and saw the new Star Wars race in Orlando. I have already booked my hotel room. I wonder if I can book one more DL race and get 3 coast to coast medals? (pink, star wars, blue). I know...this is a sickness.

I may have planned my 2016 schedule around the possibility of this SW spring race! I hope we can get all three! I'm aiming for SW DL, Glass Slipper, Tink, SW WDW, and Wine and Dine :)

Has anything ever sold out that quickly? That's kind of unnerving! I know I was reading that the Wine and Dine sold out in something like 30 minutes last time, so I suppose anything is possible. Guess I'll just keep my fingers crossed.

I would not be surprised to see Disney have the size of this race be as big as the Disney Half in January and thus have all resorts be host resorts.

They know this is a guaranteed sellout so why leave any money sitting on the table.

Hopefully they will also be smart enough to have plenty of merchandise available all days of the expo. If they're smart, the amount of money they could make on this race alone is probably more than any other half marathon weekend they currently have.

It's going to sell out fast,no doubt about that, but not that fast.I think mostly due to the lack of time to plan between the announcement/registration date and the race itself, just not enough time to plan the trip.I think they would also be smart to have at least 20,000 for the half.I predict less than an hour for AP/DVC and less than 2 hours for the regular registration.

I feel like the host hotels are usually listed when registration opens... but TBH I never book that early, so I've never been looking for the info.

I keep going back and forth on this one... I don't think it'll be a slow sellout, but I just can't tell just how much interest there is beyond our little rD world. I wouldn't be surprised to see sellouts within the first hour, but I also wouldn't be surprised to see the half linger for a while. It'll be interesting to see what happens. I hope to be in and out quickly so I can sit back and watch!

I am with you on this. I have many Star Wars fanatic friends/family. Everyone thinks it is a cool idea, many are runners already, but many say, "I could do 3 halves at home for that price" or some other reason why, as cool as it sounds, its not for them. Other runDisney folks are excited, many like me wish they could go, but can't this year. The 2016 dates are our regions school spring break week (expect a lot of New Englanders) and we already had plans for the week. I am guessing the 10k and challenge go as fast as any other this year, but, the half I think really depends on how big they choose to make the race. Big like WDW and PHM? It may take an hour or two, maybe even more. Smaller like WND? Definitely a quicker sell out.

We're planning to run, have multiple family members to register and very nervous about this selling out so quickly. My fear is one of us not getting in. The timing isn't great, it's 2 weeks after spring break here and we already had a vacation booked. We'll have to pull DS out of school at least one day and take off work 2 weeks after taking off work for spring break. Luckily my boss understands my love of Disney. I'm hoping with this being so close to spring break and most people already having plans for that week that this will go a little slower and the 3 of us will get in.

It's 2 weeks after our spring break too...so the kids will go back to school for one week and then miss another. My kids are young, and good students..we always bring the work they missed with us on vacation, but wish the timing was a bit better. We are still going though :)
