Should we stay at DTD hotel to avoid traffic?

We plan on staying off site for afternoon/night prior to checking in at AKL. Our plan is to check in at a hotel, relax and go to Downtown Disney. We will get up early the next morning and check in at AKL and head to the parks. Our trip is May/June 2016. Does anyone have any advice on where to stay? Should we stay at the Hilton or one of the hotels within walking distance of DTD so that we do not have to deal with the construction/traffic?

We stayed at B resort ( when it was royal plaza, it's even nicer now). It's walking distance to DTD. You can usually get deals for $100- 150

DTD is a nightmare of traffic and construction right now. Why do that to yourselves? Stay at AKL that night and enjoy the animals, activities, and the pool.

I would love to stay at AKL. The problem is there are no rooms available for that day. So we are trying to make the best of it and figure out what to do for our arrival evening.

The Hilton is a very nice hotel and right across the street from DTD. I would definitely stay within walking distance with all of the construction going on.

We are checking into the DTD Doubletree for one night prior to our AKL stay. It will be our third stay there and we plan on using the DTD shuttle service. It's a little farther away than Hilton, but not bad with the shuttle.

If you stay in a disney resort, even a value, they'll move your luggage for you between hotels...

That's disappointing. Perhaps one of the other Disney resorts, like the PP said.

It isn't a very long walk from hotel plaza to DTD so I don't think it is a bad option. If there is availability and you don't mind the price premium over hotel plaza one of the Port Orleans resorts is an alternative. You can take the boat to DTD and they will move your bags for you as a PP mentioned.

Thanks everyone for the advice. We booked at Port Orleans Riverside for the night before we check in at AKL. I'll keep watching to see if anything opens up at AKL but I'm excited to try Port Orleans even if it's just for the night. The boat transportation to DTD made the decision easy.
