i am trying to plan a surprise for my gf for when i come home from deployment. were already planning on getting married when i get home and are thinking about doing one with just us for now and then a real one down the road when finances are better. i was looking at the kilamanjaro engagement idea and was thinking of doing that, but a quick ceremony with just us and a JP. Is this a good idea? is this possible? how much might this cost? id want to do a really simple cake for two at our resort. any ideas how much that would be? thanks for the help!

Best wishes, and thank you for your service!

You ostensibly know your fiancée better than anyone else. I can only speak from my own perspective. I would not be on board with a surprise wedding and the promise of a do-over later. You only get married once. I'd want to at least be given the opportunity to write out some vows, choose a dress and have some pictures taken. But if you think she'd be okay with it, then making the wedding a surprise is totally your call.

Take a look at the Memories collection weddings that Disney Fairy Tale Weddings offers. They're affordable packages that are tailored to elopements and intimate wedding ceremonies.

While my now-wife would have preferred a quick wedding without any planning, I would be afraid that not all brides would feel the same. I would personally do the proposal your way (in a way that she'll never forget) but then let her plan the wedding her way - she may have been coming up with ideas since she was a little girl!

And on a side note, thank you for your service.

First of all...thank you for your service..it is appreciated!
I probably will be in the minority here...I totally love your idea...I guess its my age. Ive done the big wedding with all the trimmings..hated all of it. Family pressured for traditional when I wanted similar to what you have in mind with just a fancy reception for sometime after. I'd love it if my bf would do what you are suggesting...Totally romantic and I'd cry buckets because he cared and planned. However, ..only you know your gf best and Every women is different so its hard to say how she is going to feel. Maybe have a conversation or two on asking her" hey honey..what if ?? Or how would you feel about??? ....and kinda bring up a sanerio of what you are thinking and see what her response is.
I can't answer the cost part..sorry.
I know you want this to be a surprise but try to get how your gf really feels and go from there.
Good luck!

IMHO, given the military aspect of the whole thing, if i were able, i would be into the "surprise" wedding. but i (me personally and this opinion flies in the face of me thinking that the military aspect makes the "actually" getting married part the most important part) would enjoy a fully decked out (as best the budget and a memories package can allow) surprise. IF it were possible to do it and maybe you did some pictures and had some way to anticipate a dress etc.... i.e. elope in a fancy way. then could have a party at home (with a big dress if that matters) etc... but i would want something else about the surprise to be special for the two of us (you) - a little bit more fancy than JOP in jeans or something! not that there is anything wrong with that at all!

whatever you do, it sounds very exciting! congrats!
