Anyone using this card? Any issues with the companion $99 ticket?

Would like opinions! Currently using the RBC Infinite Avion but considering adding it for the Westjet benefits.

Thanks!

Interested to know this as well. We have a Scotiabank Gold AMEX which I love for the insurance benefits, but with the lower dollar that $99 fare looks very tempting.

I'm interested in this, too. We also currently have the Infinite Avion but usually fly westjet anyway so I've been considering switching!

Hi I just got one a few months ago. I had no issues with booking the companion fare--you do have to call to book the companion fare and also remember you are responsible for paying the taxes on the companion fare..
It did take a full 4 weeks to receive the card.
I did receive $250.00 west jet dollars which I applied to my trip.
The yearly fee for this card is $100.00.
My son is also thinking of getting one--switching from another RBC Visa.
We are not fans of Air Canada right now so hopefully this will be a good switch.

Hugs Mel

Edited to add
1 checked Bag

My husband got one last month and we're still waiting. We got the credit card right away, now it's been a month and we don't have the credit or the 99 dollar companion fare voucher. I'm hoping it comes with the first bill which should be on it's way now!

We signed up approx 3 months ago, and it took the 4-6 weeks after the first purchase. It is tough waiting as the prices go up, but as soon as it showed up I called and booked the companion and the 250 credit. Actually had 251 from my small purchase..lol. So March flights ended up costing 1000 all and all, not bad for 3. You do get the free checked luggage and that is for you and 7 others flying with you, good deal.
We will see if we keep it, but for the companion flight remember its 99 on top of your 99 yearly fee. You dont get one because of your yearly fee. The good thing about that is it is good for whatever level you want to fly, not just the cheapest. So have a long coast to coast, book business and add the companion equals about what 2 reg would cost.

I have this card and have used the 99.00 flight twice now. Also first bag free when flight booked with card. Have earned WJ dollars as well and have used them when booking. No problems at ll.

Has anyone had to use the insurance that comes with the card? I have an AMEX which has great trip cancellation coverage (not that I've used it). What is this card like? I only ask because we tend to fly in September when it's hurricane season.

I wanted to add that the free checked bag includes everyone traveling with the card holder. That is a huge savings now that Westjet also charges for the 1st bag. From the westjet site **First checked bag free for the primary cardholder and up to 8 additional guests on the same reservation†.

Also, if you have the VIP royal bank account, one credit card yearly fee is waived. I calculated the difference in cost to pay monthly RBC fees vs the RBC VIP monthly fee and it's a great value. The VIP account also includes a US chequing account. There is also a discount on the monthly VIP account if you have other services with RBC which I have.

We have the VIP package and it includes our Avion VISA. I was curious if we switched to the Westjet card and cancelled the Avion if the westjet card would then be included in our VIP package?

I have the WJ Elite Card. I love it, never had a problem book the companion fare or using my points. The only drawback (for me) is that you have to call in to book, you can't do it online. I don't think that Trip Cancellation insurance is included but it does have medial and trip interruption insurance I believe. The annual fee is pretty steep ( we also pay the $49/year for an extra card for my husband) but I think it pays for itself as long as you use the companion fare every year.

I would think you could. It didn't matter which card was chosen however I'd ask if you needed to coordinate it to the Avion's expiry date. For example, the Avion fee was paid in January and you switch now to the Westjet card, will the fee still be waived since you are only half way through the year?

Oh, good point. I hadn't thought of that! We just had our renewal so I may be better off to wait for next summer.

Anybody know how easy it would be to switch from my cashback RBC Visa to this one?

Anything I can get to help with fares in 3 years when I go with my girls would be great!

Ha! OK - I signed on to RBC to check things out - you can simply "switch credit card type" from your account!

However - the RBC Elite has a minimum household income requirement (and the regular Westjet card does not have the companion flight option) which we don't quite meet (I'm self employed and work from home so my write-offs make it look like $0 income).

But I may switch to the regular Westjet card - there is a $50 bonus in Westjet $$ for signing up, 1% of purchased back in Westjet $$.

I have 3 years to save for our flights - so every little bit helps!

We have the Alaska Airlines MBNA MC that we get the $99 Companion Fare on just like the RBC Westjet one and we have used them for a trip to WDW and to DLR and it was great.

We fly out of Seattle as it is cheaper for us to drive there from Kelowna and stay in a hotel then to try and fly out of Kelowna or Vancouver with all of the taxes.

Update - We ordered ours last week - did the 60 second approval online and then it says card package should come in 5-7 business days. We'll see! Thanks for all the replies.

I love my WJ MasterCard. I have had it for over a year now. After receiving the $250 bonus and free companion flight, I booked DS and myself a flight to British Columbia. I paid less than the cost of one regular priced flight. Like someone else mentioned the only downfall is that you have to call to book when using the companion flight and then you cannot access it online. I hate to pay the price of WJs advanced seat selection and so like to watch the flight to see how full the seats are getting - I wasn't able to do that because of making the reservation through the call centre (although I could still do it by taking the time to do a mock booking up to seat selection).
