Ugh. Might hit Florida beginning of next week. What does WDW do in cases of a Hurricane? Obviously, they probably don't open the parks, but what about food if you are staying onsite? Trust me, I have total empathy for the people who live in the area....because we suffered a ton of damage during Hurricane Sandy AND my house might be in the path of Erica too.

WDW has never really closed for a hurricane. They have had delayed openings but that's about it. During Hurricane Isaac the parks had a delayed opening at 1pm. AK and the water parks didn't open at all.

First off it's Erika.

Secondly, they won't close the parks unless it's really bad - and all indications are it won't be really bad.

I'll be there - but I find I am not sweating it. A couple days of rain won't kill us. We're at Disney.

The latest track looked like they had it shifting further away from Florida than previously forecasted, but anything could happen. If it does track more towards Florida, it doesn't look like it'll be very strong so probably some wind and rain as far as WDW is concerned. Like @skier_pete said, I wouldn't sweat it.

Thats the best attitude. I'm a fresh Central Floridian, as in mid september marks 2 years since I've lived here. This is my first real storm threat, all my coworkers and neighbors are telling me its no big deal, just a little wind and a lot of rain, by the time it reaches the center of the state. I'm from Delaware, and I've seen my fair share of Tropical storms/hurricanes/noreasters, so its not a big deal.

Actually - I would think locals would take this type of thing in stride. It's like snow for us Buffalonians - "Oh - 6 feet of snow? Whatevs. Do you want to build a snowman?"

Actually that is incorrect. They have and will close for a hurricane. We were there for Hurricane Flloyd. It was closed for a day and a half. That was actually the first time they had ever closed for one. It can happen.

Floyd was in 1999 and they closed for two days that is the longest they have ever closed for a hurricane. WDW is actually in a favorable area for not being that badly effects by hurricanes. Most of the time they have delayed openings if anything. Erika doesn't look to be a very bad storm. The water parks will likely be the first to close if it comes to that.

It's really silly to worry about hurricanes at wdw...

If one moves overland...it's just gonna be wet and you'll be stuck by the TV...but it happens so rarely that it honestly isn't even worth thinking about.

Pack a poncho and an umbrella

That was the only incident...

The 3 storms in 2004 was the worst recorded hurricane clip for Orlando...lots of property damage in the area...and I think they had only delays/early closures...no full cancellations.

Hurricanes need water to survive and 50/60 miles from the coast is the breakwall that in 99.9999% sure they wanted when they started buying swampland in 1963/1964.

When we were there is 2008 in August, we arrived just after a hurricane had skirted by Florida up the gulf coast. It had dumped FOUR straight days of full-on rain on WDW. We talked to several people who were there and they said it was terrible. One or two rainy days I can handle, but I'm always nervous about something like that.

In the end, I'm still not sweating this one too badly, we will make due and having 11 days I am not going to let 1 or 2 washouts worry me.

The thing I just can't find (And maybe no one has this info. lol. Thats why I can't find it) is if a Tropical storm goes over orlando how long till they start letting flights come in? Man I wish I was getting here a few days earlier or later! Ugh. Any advice for a guy who has a flight scheduled to arrive at 9:45am on Tuesday morning at MCO?

We were there when Hurricane Frances came through in 2004. We arrived on Friday and went to MK for the afternoon. Every ride was a walk on. On Saturday at 6 p.m. curfew was ordered by the local sheriff's department. If I remember correctly all Parks were closed that day. The eye came over the WDW area sometimes in the middle of the night. All Parks were closed on Sunday and only MK and Epcot were open on Monday.

Find a way to get in Monday and grab any hotel you can? The real issue is, once they start cancelling flights, getting everyone re-booked and finding flights for them can take a couple of days. Not sure where you are coming from, but is driving or taking the train an option?

I was wondering the exact same thing. Coming in on Tuesday morning also. A couple hours after you.

Southwest opened up free changes this afternoon so we are coming in on Sunday evening. We were able to get a room at pop century for Sunday and Monday for $80 each night!
