Alright, my DS (3) is obsessed with Villians and love halloween! He is not in school yet so that is not an issue, but I work for the public schools. Any other educators or school employees figured out a way to vacation in the fall for MNSSHP without using all your PTO? I feel so guilty taking days off from work when I am given Christmas Break, Spring Break, and summer every year and we usually just suck it up and go in the summer. But... I really want to get DS to the Halloween party. He would just love it so much! Ideas?

There are not going to be many meetable villains this year. Maybe do a long weekend?

I should have prefaced... not this year. Maybe next year. A long weekend is possible. Just got to make sure I can justify the cost of airfare since we live pretty far away.

Oh...well maybe your school will offer a fall break by then. More and more schools are adding them every year. Lol

Do you have Columbus Day off?? That would be a good long weekend without having to claim your PTO days.

You are probably right. I have never done a "quick" trip to WDW. We have always done a minimum of 6-7 nights. Anyone done a 3 night trip? Do you get a dining plan for a short trip? Also, how much are MNSSHP tickets. Trying to figure out how much a quicker trip would cost compared to our longer summer ones.

Can you take the days before or after a break off? If so, I would take 1-2 days around that random Friday and go then. We can't take any days (or get paid vacation at least) surrounding a holiday so that wouldn't work for me- but hopefully it can for you!

We have Fall break Columbus week and also get Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur off which are in October next year. They are generally in Sept. but are later next year.

We are going in 4 weeks. We are a large group of 4 families; 2 of the moms (of which I am 1) are teachers and 1 is a school nurse. I am in Virginia. My system just has blackout dates for personal days the first 10 days and the last 10 days of school. My principal was more than happy to sign off on my personal days. We are taking 9 kids, ages 4-15, with us and have no issues pulling them out of school for 5 days.

We do short trips all the time. With a 7th grader and a 3rd grader, I hate to pull them out of school. Our school does not give work ahead of time, so they have to makeup any missed work when they return from a trip.

We arrange our short trips (for the Food & Wine Festival and Flower & Garden Festival) this way:

Fall trip with a Mon. & Tues. off from school (kids miss no school)... fly out Friday after school, fly back Tuesday.

Spring trip with a Friday off from school...fly out Thursday after school, fly back Monday (kids miss one day of school).

In my old school, we had 3 personal days. I used all 3 together added to Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend in January and we went to Universal. It was amazing and I'm so glad we did it. You could take 1-2 days and go over that long weekend you have in October. You could take Wednesday and Thursday off, and do the party on the Thursday night when it's not going to be as busy. A bonus is that Tuesday and Wednesday flights often are cheaper than other days of the week.

I work for a school as an instructional assistant. I get 10 personal days each year. If I want or need to take them, I do not hesitate. I have to request a sub to fill my position, but it's allowed so I don't feel guilty at all. I never take all 10 days in a year. In fact, I've accrued close to 200 hours, which is 8 weeks on my 25-hour per week schedule. I use my PTO if I'm sick, if one of my kids is sick, if I need to make an appointment that cannot be made outside of school hours, or if I want to go out of town. My co-worker (also an assistant in my classroom) is taking tomorrow off. Her friend got married in another state yesterday and it was cheaper for her to fly back tomorrow so she's taking the day off. We're taking our older DS on a trip in January. Younger DS (a high school junior) isn't going because he doesn't want to miss a day of school so he's going to stay with my sister. I'm going to take a day off. No guilt! Just do it!

My wife and I are both teachers. We are going the week of Halloween. We have no qualms taking the days as we have never taken a family vacatoin during the school year before. My daughter is 8 and it will be her first Disney trip.

New here, but we did a 4 night trip and thought it was great. We just went in knowing that we weren't going to be doing everything, and picked the things that we wanted to do the most and fit them into our days.

I'd never stress about getting a 3,4,5,6, maybe even a 7 year old to a Special event. We took my now 20 year old when she was 7 to Universal and WDW. She can't even remember the trip. The year she was 10 she has a great memory from the trips. Our MNSSHP trips were the first week of Sept around Labor Day, the first event night, and the week of Columbus Day. Our last trip was Halloween week and it was a nightmare. Too many early closures for the party multiple nights, and the event was too packed to enjoy.

Many of you are right. I should not feel guilty for using PTO when I have it to use. Maybe we will try for a quick trip next year. Any of you that have done a quicker trip to MNSSHP, what is your advise. How many nights minimum? Do you do a dining plan?
