Have you checked out the new Verizon plans?

Verizon has a new plan pricing structure again (being advertised as S, M, L, XL). I checked out DH's plan and he could keep what he has and save $10/month, or triple his current data for $5 extra. Extra lines are now only $20/month instead of $40 as well, maybe we'll consider adding the kids.

My boss, who has his wife and two other family members, along with a hotspot, could save $110/month and gain 2GB data. He would lose most of their storage allowance with VZ Cloud, so I need to find out if they even use that or not.

If you're on Verizon, you might save some money changing your plan!

Okay, not sure if all added lines will be $20/month right off the bat:

Monthly access charges for smartphones on The Verizon Plan differ based on:

  • If you're currently making monthly device payments or own the phone, the monthly access charge will be $20
  • If you purchased the phone at a discounted price, the monthly access charge is $40

You can switch to The Verizon Plan anytime, but the monthly access charges for all devices on 2-year contracts will remain at $40 until each device contract expires. Once each device contract expires, the monthly access charge will automatically drop to $20.

To me this says a phone still on the 2 year contract would still be $40, in which case DH's phone would still be $40, but online logged into his account it is showing he would save money. Will have to check this out further.

Well, I did an online chat, and if you're still under contract it is still $40. Not sure anymore if DH will save. Boss would save a little, but not the $110 they are saying on the website. I told the rep it was misleading.

Anyway, maybe some people will find this helpful :)

I will have to check into this. Thanks op!
Just be careful, because the more I read, the more I find out...I think if you switch to this, you won't get the discounted phones in the future with a 2 year contract. These new plans seem to either be financing with Edge, or bringing your own, off-contract device in order to get the full savings. Definitely talk with a rep.

OK, so I checked it out. We already switched to edge last time we got new phones...I think last November. I did the math/research and it came out better for us with our 10g data package. So that doesn't worry me that we can't do the discounted phone in the future.
Looks like we will save $40/month by switching....$20 off each line for line access...plus get 12g data instead of 10g. So are there any downsides. I don't know why they would just give us more data and a $40/mth discount if it does nothing for them. Whats the catch?!?!

We checked it out this weekend. First my DH went to Verizon and they told him he could save $110. The lady conveniently forgot to add in the cost of the phone. Then we went to Best Buy where we were told the new plan would save us all of $5.00 and we would have less data. So not happy about that. I agree that the info we got from Verizon and Verizon.com was misleading.

It saved us about $50 a month for our family plan with 5 lines. 3 of us have old enough phones that they are now $20 each a month, and we have 12 GB for the family which is plenty. Previously, 3 of us had only 2 GB each, while one had unlimited and one had 6 GB.

Here's my life understanding. Those "free" phones we got to upgrade to were never free. The cost was built into the plan ie the 40 per line was 25 for phone and 15 for service. Verizon has basically removed the built in free phone and now you either pay for it out of pocket or finance through the edge program. There may be a slight savings or a little bit more data but for the most part it just removed the free phone charge.

Thank you for posting this! I was debating switching providers to something cheaper until I found out my new place only gets service from Verizon- this makes that so much easier to swallow. I'm choosing to cut back on data since they don't have an 8GB plan, and am now saving about what I would have been by switching!

The good thing is Verizon and T-Mobile are getting rid of the "free" phone shenanigans. People those phones were never free. You were always paying for them. The faster the rest of the phone companies get rid of the "subsidized" phones with the 2 year contract the better.

I wonder how long it will be until they catch on to the fact that I'm still on unlimited data now... Anyone use Sprint and happy with them? I used to use them way back when and liked them.

It doesn't matter if you switch now or later, eventually when you get a new phone you will not get a discounted phone and a 2 year contract. They are no longer doing that. I think changing from what we have now, our bill will go up a little bit. I only have 1 phone out of contract at this time, the other 3 still have a year left.

I ended up switching and saving money. We had 2 phones at $40/each and 1/2 gig of data for $20 so bill has been $100. Now we're at $20 for both phones plus 1 gig of data for $30 so bill will be $70 AND we get more data out of the deal.

I switched and lost money and I'm not happy about it. We lost the $15 per line out of contract discount for 2 phones and also lost the $25 edge discount for the other. When I did the online checkout I was given a monthly bill amount of $136. Got my bill yesterday and it was $173! I was furious. The online checkout does not tell you that you lose those discounts so beware if you have discounts because you will lose them. (It did keep the 15% govt employee discount though.).

Verizon is capitalizing on the fact that a big chunk of their customers don't want to keep a phone 2 years. They literally were able to track that many of their heavy users get a new phone every 6 months!

I certainly am the odd man out in that I have kept a phone for as long as 14 years! But that was back when you HAD to buy the phone. My bill used to run $50 for 4 phones with airtime (2 main phones at $19.95 a month, 2 companion phones for $9.95 a month. About $42 was the monthly charge, about $8 bucks was for airtime. While airtime was 25 cents a minute daytime then, all our calls were after 7 pm and before 7 am when it was 15 cents a minute.
