Oh Florida! An East Meets West Girl's TR: 8/9 p56 & 8/17 p57

We've started to skip AK, too. We have a great zoo just twenty minutes from our house, so we don't really need to see the animals, although the safari does remain a favorite. The last time we went there was for dinner at Yak & Yeti. I was determined to finally try the wonton dessert but the delicious pot stickers and Mahi Mahi filled me up.

Mary Ellen, I am so very sorry to hear about Kismet's issues and I can feel how anguished you are. You have lost beloved pets in the short time I have known you and my heart breaks when someone is faced with making a decision about what is best for their pets.

So glad that you and Cynthia started your morning with breakfast at Olivia's. YUM!

I totally get skipping AK! This is a half-day park for us, always, and since our trips are typically in summer, so very hot. I think we skipped AK on our last family trip in 2013, and it didn't make the cut on my 2 day solo trip last year. Obviously!

EPCOT is my favorite park and I would end it all there, too!

I am so not a shopper, at Disney or anywhere. I didn't even know that Art of Disney store existed. Maybe I will check it out at the end of the month.

Your fountain photos are fantastic and the random people pictures are fun!

:thumbsup2

I'm so very sorry to hear about Kismet. As Dee said, you've had a tough time with your pets lately. Know that I'm thinking about you.

Your breakfast at Olivia's looks absolutely delicious! We have had dinner there twice and we consider Olivia's a true hidden gem.

I really don’t feel much like doing an update. I had to take my cat, Kismet, to the vet today.

I'm sorry, Mary Ellen. I can see where that would put a damper on things.

At some point that morning we reconsidered our plans for AK and both decided we were going to skip it this trip. I know *GASP* No AK.

 Are you allowed to do that??

Wow - I obviously totally broke THAT rule. Sorry! I guess I saw it too late.

:rotfl2::lmao::rotfl: It's a nice, clear shot of that sign.

Ummmmm - yeah - maybe I didn’t see that sign at all. :faint:

Sure, we'll go with that.

and random pictures of shorts on people that may be misconstrued as too small.

:scared1: Careful, this is a family board!

Cool! I'm glad you got to hang out with your DIS friends again. Jelly Rolls looks like a fun place, although I've still never been there.

It was a lot of fun. I really recommend it. Those guys are so darn talented. It's actually pretty impressive the amount of music they can memorize.

Well, it wasn't built until after the 80s so either they must be going for an 80's feel or the interior decorator was an out of touch has been when they designed it.

When was it built? It sort of has that towny bar feel to it. I guess I thought it would be a little bit more upscale given its location.

Last days are always bittersweet. I'm glad you are at least getting a little bit of park time in.

Last days are always tough. That's why I alway have to have another trip planned. If not I get really depressed....and we can't have that! ::yes::

It was so sad. He was, and still is, heartbroken. He sent me all the pictures and picked the music he wanted me to sing. I was so happy to do that for him.

Remember you have some Cali friends you can always turn to for help! :goodvibes

I will MOST DEFINITELY turn to you for help. Any suggestions you have for "must sees" between San Francisco and San Diego - just say the word. I know you are a big road tripper so you probably could plan the perfect trip off the top of your head.

You go all the time, how lucky you are! Do they change their exhibits frequently or just with the seasons?

The way I see it there is - Christmas, F&W (Halloween), and Flower & Garden. Everything else is just generic - not that there is anything wrong with that!

It was just silly. Of course that toddle couldn't see a darn thing. I guess it was just the point of me leaning in front of her to take a picture just really upset the mom.

So much fun! I've always wanted to visit Jellyrolls, but thought it may be more fun to go with more people than just the two of us?:confused3

A big group definitely makes it more fun. When your whole table is singing and laughing - that IS fun!!!

I've always wondered if they'd let you though just to get to the front of the park!

Well, now you know the answer...and so do we! :rotfl2:

Ugh, awful cabbie. I'm not paying you to drive in circles, i'm paying you to get me home!

Seriously! :sad2: That was so annoying! I really had to bite my tongue.

Uh, yeah, super lucky! It would be so easy to convince DH to move. Golf and Disney?! Heck yes!

Oh wow - I can't get Denny to bite on a move, but he definitely likes the snowbird plan for winters. I figure we just have to keep going a little longer every year and before you know it, we'll be there on year long! :rolleyes1

:rotfl2: It's all in good fun - picking on Marv that is! Sorry Marv! :scared:
Really? Ganging up on Marv? :( You KNOW how sensitive I am............... :rolleyes1

Hi guys. I really don’t feel much like doing an update. I had to take my cat, Kismet, to the vet today. She was straining to urinate and I thought she just had a simple UTI, but she has an abnormality on her Xray that the vet thinks might be a tumor in her abdomen She is having further testing and spending the night there. I am really worried about her and me, because it may be time to make hard decisions again. Kismet is 14, so she’s an old lady, but I was hoping she would have a couple years left.
Sorry to hear about Kismet! I know that's so tough for you. Hope everything works out okay!

and random pictures of shorts on people that may be misconstrued as too small.

Yikes! On the bright side, we saw some much more revealing bikini bottoms when we were at Blizzard Beach last week!

Uh, I mean.............. :sad2:

You got some great pictures of a beautiful final day at Epcot! And you can never go wrong with a breakfast at Olivia's, even if you didn't make it to AK.

I'm so very sorry about Kismet! I saw on FB that there was heartache right now. Completely understand not being in the DISMood, and that's so totally ok! But what you did share is wonderful, MEK. THanks for taking the time. :) I could easily end up with mugs this trip, as I try to stick with things that'll be used.

First off, I'm so sorry about Kismet. We just went through some sad years when all our furbabies were over 12 and for about five years, we were saying goodbye to one after another. Now most of them are all babies again, so it will be while before that happens again, but I know what it's like to have old kitties.

I was so far behind, that I'll just comment on the last post because I don't know if I commented on the previous one. Last days are always sad, but I agree with you, have another trip on the horizon to help soothe the pain of leaving! Great that you finally made it to Olivia's for breakfast, and I can agree with you on skipping AK. That's the park that will be cut from our trip in December. Ooops on the pictures in the art store! Nice that you got one of the pictures and it was signed!

I will MOST DEFINITELY turn to you for help. Any suggestions you have for "must sees" between San Francisco and San Diego - just say the word. I know you are a big road tripper so you probably could plan the perfect trip off the top of your head.

Also Monterey and Carmel are very nice places to see, there are also some great restaurants there, Triple D style and fancy places. Passionfish in Pacific Grove is one that my parents enjoy visiting. It's not necessary to take Highway 1 all the way down California as that drive can be very long and windy, but it might be nice to drive that route from San Francisco on the way to Monterey or Carmel.

Though I'm not recommending that, but it wouldn't hurt to plan stops along the way for two different nights inbetween. I would recommend checking out PrincessInOz's "Mad Dash" thread which chronicles three different trips to California she has taken with her family over the past Five? years I think. She also has a thread on the Aussie boards about all things San Francisco. Also very helpful.

Made it through the last couple of updates, and as always I love your photos. EPCOT in the evening as shadows lengthen make for some really pictures! The launch was interesting; cool that you got one that had a bit of the park in it.

It was such a beautiful evening for pictures! And it was super cool to be able to see the little bit of the launch. I loved that! Thanks for the compliment on the pictures!

I guess I am one that won't miss the hat, but then again, I don't love that park in the first place, so don't spend a lot of time there on trips. The whole thing needs to be re-vamped and updated and expanded. Just kinda blah as it is. Anyway, just checking in and reading as I can these days.

I agree - it could use a bit of a facelift. It's sort of stagnant. But it does have RnR, ToT, and TSM! So that counts for something, right? :rotfl2:

Just checking in while I have some down time !! Even did an update on my Rosie Roams 2015 . Have been busy checking out things for my Universal trip in October !!!

I need a link to that TR Rosie. I don't think I'm subbed to it. I really need to track it down. I don't see it in your signature!

We've started to skip AK, too. We have a great zoo just twenty minutes from our house, so we don't really need to see the animals, although the safari does remain a favorite.

I do love the safari, but I enjoy the park for more than that. I love EE. It's a great ride and I love taking pictures on it. I love taking pictures through the whole park. It's my favorite to photograph.

The last time we went there was for dinner at Yak & Yeti. I was determined to finally try the wonton dessert but the delicious pot stickers and Mahi Mahi filled me up.

That sounds pretty darn delicious. I have been wanting to try the wontons for while. I heard they are amazing!

Fortunately Miss Kismet is doing much, much better. When I wrote this there was serious concern that she might have a mass, but X-rays did not show anything. Rather, between hair balls and changing her food she developed a severe case of constipation and then ended up with an UTI. She was pretty sick for a couple days and wanted nothing to do with eating. She is so much better now.

So glad that you and Cynthia started your morning with breakfast at Olivia's. YUM!

It was pretty darn yummy! ::yes::

I totally get skipping AK! This is a half-day park for us, always, and since our trips are typically in summer, so very hot. I think we skipped AK on our last family trip in 2013, and it didn't make the cut on my 2 day solo trip last year. Obviously!

I have never skipped AK before, but since I knew I would be back in October I wasn't too worried about missing out. I usually spend a half day there as well, but I do love taking pictures in that park. I think its the most photogenic.

EPCOT is my favorite park and I would end it all there, too!

:thumbsup2 I couldn't agree more! :thumbsup2

I am so not a shopper, at Disney or anywhere. I didn't even know that Art of Disney store existed. Maybe I will check it out at the end of the month.

I'm not usually much of a big shopper either, but I do love window shopping there. they have so much cool artwork. I love it! :wizard:

Your fountain photos are fantastic and the random people pictures are fun!

:thumbsup2

Thanks and..., well...., you know me and random people. I love playing paparazzi! :rotfl:

I'm so very sorry to hear about Kismet. As Dee said, you've had a tough time with your pets lately. Know that I'm thinking about you.

Thanks Lisa. I really appreciate it. Having "senior" pets is challenging because they all cross the rainbow bridge at the same time. Fortunately, Kismet is doing much better after being treated aggressively for sever constipation and a UTI. She is almost back to her old self.

Your breakfast at Olivia's looks absolutely delicious! We have had dinner there twice and we consider Olivia's a true hidden gem.

It really is! I love it there. I have had nothing but wonderful meals there. It's definitely a favorite. The food quality remains very consistent.

I'm sorry, Mary Ellen. I can see where that would put a damper on things.

Thanks Mark! She is doing much, much better today. I was really prepared for the worst and so happy to find out she did not have a terminal illness. I really pray she makes a full recovery and gets to hang around 1 year or two more.

 Are you allowed to do that??

Probably not, but we did it anyway. :rotfl2: It did feel pretty weird. I am fairly certain I have never completely skipped a park before.

:rotfl2::lmao::rotfl: It's a nice, clear shot of that sign.

I know, right? Wow is all I can say....Wow! That picture makes me look totally clueless. That's for sure!

Sure, we'll go with that.

It's a fairly safe assumption in this case!

:scared1: Careful, this is a family board!

:rotfl2: And Disney is a family park....:rotfl2:

It is a new dynamic and I really don't want everyone feeling like they're in everyone else's face, even if its just for a night. I finally found a Staybridge suites that is a two BR, two bath, serves breakfast, and was rated 30 out of 350 Orlando hotels. It got excellent reviews and its less than half the price I would pay for 1 night in 2 value rooms. :thumbsup2

Outstanding!

I can't wait!!!!! I loved watching it from your balcony. It looked fun. Believe me - if I had known one other person registering for the half that I could commiserate with, I would have gone that route. But the whole solo planning, pre and post race thing. Well, that's just too much for me. If everything works out I am going to try to run a half in Virginia Beach in March.

I can relate. Avengers is very much at risk for getting deferred and that is part of it. I may be able to convince Jeff to go along but it's not the same. Ann and many others I know will be there but Ann plans to drop back and hang with Kira. As she should. I don't know. I'm super torn. I could downgrade hotels and it's more doable but if I am solo, I really don't want to downgrade. Ugh.

Sure you don't want to register for that and share my room with me? LOL. POT is past but I think it isn't sold out yet.

We have a pretty busy September with a wedding, a long weekend at the beach, and bike to the bay. I haven't been getting my mid week day off recently and that was helping with my long runs, but I'll manage. I've been doing mostly biking and we've started riding our mountain bikes during the weekday. I will have to concentrate on the long runs in September, even with BTTB.

I hear you, I have a training plan for my Sept half and it's all wackadoodle between my ankle, hikes, a couple of short races we had planned and "staycation" Then I get into my scary fall travel mode. UGH! Good thing I know this one won't be for time.

I'm glad we did. I feel like we needed the park time at the end of the trip!

Agreed, can't have too much Epcot, F&G kiosks or Illuminations. At least you and I (and Jeff and Denny too I think lol) can't.

Plus it was great to see Kat again even if it was only for a millisecond.

As I've sad before - you could NEVER be a bum. I just remember how low the humidity was. A perfect running day.

Oh I was a bum. Coffee on the Verandah is a last day tradition for me. Not giving that up. And it was PERFECT weather for it but I do recall being quite envious that you got that weather for your running day while I almost died on my DTD run.

At some point that morning we reconsidered our plans for AK and both decided we were going to skip it this trip. I know *GASP* No AK.

But we both wanted to close out our trip in Epcot. It didn’t matter that we had been there almost every day of this trip. It just felt like the right thing to do.

We did! Plus we wanted a
DISmeet
and that wouldn't have happened if we had gone to AK.

I adore AK and Jeff and I did make up some time there on our fall trip so that helped.

We decided to check out the art store. There were two special guest appearances scheduled for the day. Cynthia and I both found small prints that we bought and Larry Dobson signed them I do not have a picture of mine. I know I should go take one to show you, but I am far too lazy.

I picked up two. One resort, one park image. I do have pictures that I will post at some point1

Love your pics of Illuminations! And Jelly Roll's looks like so much fun, maybe I'll check it out since I'm staying there in a month! (Sorry, I just can't believe I'm FINALLY staying at the Boardwalk! AHHHH!!!!)

I'm so sorry about your kitty, but at least she's doing better now, right? You've been updating on FB about her and I remember being happy that she was feeling better! :dogdance:

Those prints are so pretty, I love Disney art!

Me too. In the interim.....it's painful.

This may have been about points maybe. If so then I feel your pain. I am so points poor right now.

I really thought we would be able to walk through. I actually wonder what time they cut people off. We definitely would have been through in no time, but it was fine. I am sort of turned off by cabbies at this point.

I know I did walk through once. It was EMH but maybe a 3 hour one. I don't think I was trying to end at the last minute but I was within the last half hour.

Yikes! On the bright side, we saw some much more revealing bikini bottoms when we were at Blizzard Beach last week!

Uh, I mean.............. :sad2:

:sad2:

Fortunately Miss Kismet is doing much, much better. When I wrote this there was serious concern that she might have a mass, but X-rays did not show anything. Great News. Like you I lost 2 of mine close together and have 1 left. She is about 10 years old now but still very much kitten like.

Nice shots of Illuminations from Japan. I think Norway is my favorite spot.
Hey your last day should be what you want. You will be back and AK will be there.

Good deal on the hotel for the next trip.

We also got to see Larry Dotson in EPCOT. I was able to get a couple autographed as well.

The orchid display at Longwood looks really pretty and you got some excellent shots as well.

Well, it's not AK, but that still looks like an enjoyable day. :rotfl:

Those shorts are .

Glad that you guys finally got your breakfast at Olivia's.

I am so happy that Kismet is doing better and I hope she has many more years of health and cuddles. Our cat is about 15 and I can certainly imagine how worried you were with her being so sick at this age.

I'm sorry you skipped AK (I love that park), but glad you did NOT skip Olivia's a second time. We had breakfast there last month and it was very yummy as always.

Beautiful pictures around Epcot, and I love the print that you bought and had signed.

Ummm...yes, lady, you need longer shorts!

Cute mugs.

Really? Ganging up on Marv? :( You KNOW how sensitive I am............... :rolleyes1

Oh yeah, I forgot.... All in goof fun!

Sorry to hear about Kismet! I know that's so tough for you. Hope everything works out okay!

She is going much, much better. I am so happy for that. She's an old girl but I wasn't quite ready to put her to sleep ...yet.

Yikes! On the bright side, we saw some much more revealing bikini bottoms when we were at Blizzard Beach last week!

Uh, I mean.............. :sad2:

:rotfl2::rotfl::lmao: I think Pat liked that remark!

You got some great pictures of a beautiful final day at Epcot! And you can never go wrong with a breakfast at Olivia's, even if you didn't make it to AK.

It was a gorgeous day. Probably the best day of our trip. Why does that always happen? It happened in February, too. Cold all week and the day we left it was 80 degrees and sunny. :scratchin

I'm so very sorry about Kismet! I saw on FB that there was heartache right now. Completely understand not being in the DISMood, and that's so totally ok! But what you did share is wonderful, MEK. THanks for taking the time. :)

Fortunately, she is doing much, much better. I am thrilled it was nothing really serious. She is pretty much back to her old self, but I am watching her very closely.

I could easily end up with mugs this trip, as I try to stick with things that'll be used.

I haven't updated my mugs in quite while, so I think I am going to buy at least one. My kids don't really drink soda. They mostly drink water, so I'm definitely not getting one for everyone. But I probably buy one or two. I want to see with the drink dispenser at the Boardwalk is now. You used to have to go to the bakery or ask to have it filled at the bar. That's just too annoying to be worth it.

First off, I'm so sorry about Kismet. We just went through some sad years when all our furbabies were over 12 and for about five years, we were saying goodbye to one after another. Now most of them are all babies again, so it will be while before that happens again, but I know what it's like to have old kitties.

Thanks! She is doing much better, but as you said, you just never know when the next shoe is going to drop on an elderly cat. It's like you have to expect it. I was pretty sure I would be putting 3 cats to sleep within a 2 year period. That's tough. I'm glad you have all babies. What a relief to not have to worry about your fur babies' health for awhile.

Olivia's was wonderful. I just love that place!

I knew I would be back in October so I didn't feel terrible about cutting AK from the agenda. Plus, Denny and I had a really nice day there the proceeding February, so I wasn't too upset about it. It felt weird to schedule it on the last day, so I'm glad we picked Epcot instead.

Ooops on the pictures in the art store! Nice that you got one of the pictures and it was signed!

It's rather embarrassing that I totally did NOT see that sign. I am SO used to taking pictures all over Disney that I don't even look for things like that anymore. But take me in any historic building and I am very aware of it because some places are really strict about pictures. I always ask first.

Since you like nature, I would definitely suggest that you visit Big Basin. Also Monterey and Carmel are very nice places to see, there are also some great restaurants there, Triple D style and fancy places. Passionfish in Pacific Grove is one that my parents enjoy visiting. For sure, I hope you are planning on driving down the 101 to get to Southern California instead of taking I-5 through inland right? It's not necessary to take Highway 1 all the way down California as that drive can be very long and windy, but it might be nice to drive that route from San Francisco on the way to Monterey or Carmel.

Thanks for the tip. We definitely want to do the scenic route. Good to know about taking Highway 1 from San Fran to Monterey. I will have to google Big Basin. It just seems like there is SO much to do in California. I hope we can fit it all in and not be overachievers.

Oh yeah, just south of San Francisco is Half Moon Bay, which is a nice quaint town to visit. Farther down the coast well past Monterey, there is Morro Bay and Pismo Beach, there aren't overly stellar things to do there, but they are very picturesque. Alicia mentioned Paso Robles as a good place for So Cal Wine Tasting. Santa Barbara is a another nice place to stop on Highway 101, and Solvang is a Danish community where you can find some great pastries and a fun time, also more wine tasting.

Oh wow - sounds like so many really cool towns.

A little farther down the way you'll come to Ventura and there are some nice things to see and do there. Essentially you can turn a drive that could take one day (no stops) into something where you can stop for any number of nights and stretch the drive from SF to LA into a week if you wanted.

I think we were thinking staying at least two nights along the coast but with all the different locations you have mentioned, maybe we need more. We have a full two weeks but I am wondering if its better to knock out a few stops so we can really enjoy the places where we do stop. Thanks for all the wonderful suggestion. I will definitely check out the "mad dash" thread. I think I subbed at the tail end of that so I missed quite a bit. What a great suggestion!

So glad that Kismet is so much better.

Thanks! She seems pretty much back to normal, which is such a relief!!!!

Outstanding!

I just can't figure out why it took me SO long to find this place???? I kept focusing on Marriott and choice hotels, since I belong to their rewards programs. But this is going to be so much better. Plus, its fairly close to DTD. I am hoping we might get to go there on our arrival evening, but since summer afternoon's are notorious for thunderstorms and flight delays, I am not overly optimistic.

Ugh.

That's a tough decision. You want it to be right and if downgrading affects the experience...well.... I know what you mean.

Sure you don't want to register for that and share my room with me? LOL. POT is past but I think it isn't sold out yet.

I WISH! OMG - that would be so fun! Seriously tempting, but I have so much on the books (actually too much) for the next year that I would have to do some major, major modifications. Ugh - if only I didn't have a job and had the extra money. I would LOVE it!

I hear you, I have a training plan for my Sept half and it's all wackadoodle between my ankle, hikes, a couple of short races we had planned and "staycation" Then I get into my scary fall travel mode. UGH! Good thing I know this one won't be for time.

Your staycation sounded so fun! Wow - so much to do where you live. There's a lot to do here, but I think its a totally different experience. Anyway - you have me intrigued by the staycation and I think I will plan one of those for next year. I will need to after this year and all the traveling we have planned. But I would love to do the NYC thing and in the same week head down to DC. Speaking of which - let me know about that race in October.

Agreed, can't have too much Epcot, F&G kiosks or Illuminations. At least you and I (and Jeff and Denny too I think lol) can't.

I can NEVER have too much Epcot. I am sure I am going to be spending plenty of time there on our upcoming vacation. I could see me just spending time at the pool and Epcot. I would be totally happy!

Plus it was great to see Kat again even if it was only for a millisecond.

Absolutely. I look forward to seeing her again during the Princess weekend. There is going to be a meet Sunday night. That should be a lot of fun!

Oh I was a bum. Coffee on the Verandah is a last day tradition for me. Not giving that up. And it was PERFECT weather for it but I do recall being quite envious that you got that weather for your running day while I almost died on my DTD run.

Nothing wrong with that tradition! I am just wondering how hot its going to be for running next week. I have been doing a lot of my runs late in the evening here at home. Now I'll have to switch to morning. I have a feeling I will be taking a lot of short runs. I wouldn't mind going over to FW one morning to run. We shall see. I also desperately need a new pair of running shoes. I called the Delaware running company to get in a pair of 8 wide glycerins. I hope they come in before we leave. I really need them. I am not crazy about the color they come in, but hopefully it won't be that bad when I try them on in person.

We did! Plus we wanted a
DISmeet
and that wouldn't have happened if we had gone to AK.

There is NO way I was going to miss that meet!

I adore AK and Jeff and I did make up some time there on our fall trip so that helped.

And Denny and I made up for it in October, so its all good!

I picked up two. One resort, one park image. I do have pictures that I will post at some point1

I forgot you got two. How cool. I do love mine. It's so pretty! That was fun!
