Cutting the cord and so confused!

I cut the cord a few years back and am 100% happy! I love having the antenna in our attic, since I like to sometimes just watch random news or talk shows, etc. The antenna pulls in any local stations, and depending on where you live can be as cheap as $10 to buy one...we get about 10-12 channels on antenna....
........I also like netflix, since I like movies and older shows. I haven't gotten huluplus yet, since I just watch abc.com on my tablet sometimes for free.(we don't pull in ABC on antenna at my house) I have amazon prime, but not for long,as their shows aren't as interesting as the other 2 choices I have.
Comcast charges us 39.99 for FAST internet alone- love it. ...And... I have a Tivo box I purchased used on ebay that connects to my antenna/tv,which means I just record any network shows I want to watch and watch them whenever. (I love this box, you can buy a tivo with a lifetime membership so it costs nothing to use after you buy it) so once we cut the cord we are paying about 8.00 per month for netflix,in addition to internet, which we want anyway. so I call it 8.00.:rotfl: I never run out of things to watch, granted I like to watch somewhat offbeat things at times.....

How much is Comcast charging you for internet only? After going round and round with them for a few rounds I got them to mark mine down to $39.95 for Economy Plus internet. I think the download speed is 3MPS.
Former Comcast internet help desk person here and I know just how awful poor service can be - that Economy Plus speed is "Up To" 3MPS. Basically you're getting a little bit more than dial up. It won't be fast enough for streaming properly or phone connection (or worse, using phone and streaming at the same time). Please get the most speed you possibly can, it will greatly enhance your viewing.

all the major channels you can get on your laptop/computer/tablet. CBS, NBC, FOX, ABC all let you stream for Free most of their shows.

We use Netflix for the kids.

I would rather have a faster speed but I told them I refuse to pay them more than $40 per month. I would get streaming video, but isn't that another $10 per month? I don't watch enough TV to pay that much. Seems high.

If you aren't planning to use netflix or hulu or any of the other internet-based programming on your tv, and don't need an internet phone connection, and aren't doing any online gaming, then you might be OK with what you have. Or you could call Comcast and tell them you want to cancel your service because other people have much higher speeds than you do for about the same price, and see if they offer you something faster.

The problem with most of them is that they are more than willing to give you a lower introductory price to get you to sign up but then proceed to jack up the rate in 6 months or a year.
I have never had a problem getting my rate reduced back to the introductory rate.

They let you stream *some* of their shows, some full episodes, some recaps but never full seasons and rarely the most current for free. If you truly want to watch a current show, beginning to end you need to sign in with your cable ID. Meaning, you have to be paying for cable.

I've looked into cutting the cord many times but with a family of five with highly different tastes it would cost me as much, if not more to subscribe to the various streaming services and then supplement with season passes on stuff you just can't get any other way. I hate my cable bill, truly despise it but I admit, I'm spoiled and I like my TV. If I could truly watch the shows I wanted to with apps alone I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Here, Cox will now say, "when would you like us to shut off service" when you call and try force their hand.

Most of them do that now, they don't care and why should they, they make plenty of money off of all the other suckers who never push back.

Man I'm so jealous of the rates you all pay for internet. Living out in the boondocks is terrible on internet and prices!

Well, there's also the problem that for some there really isn't anywhere else to go and they know that.

Yes that's true. I guess I just don't mind if I miss a couple episodes of shows and if I'm way behind instead of current. It's easy to check out which shows are offered though and if cutting costs is more important than missing a couple episodes then the OP might be able to get away with it.

Just wanted add clarification so they know what they'd be working with.

For us, cutting the cord just doesn't seem to work out. Comcast knows what they're doing to keep people stuck - if I cancel any one part of my "triple play" package, the price actually goes up. If I cut down to internet only I'll still be paying $90/mo (the negotiated 12-mo discount on my triple-play is $140/mo) because the internet price goes through the roof if you aren't a Comcast cable customer. And while I could patch together streaming subscriptions for most of our shows there are a few I couldn't, so I'd be paying per-episode for The Walking Dead and losing MLB baseball completely for the sake of about $20/mo savings. It just isn't worth it. I'll keep haggling with Comcast to get the bill down every year, because until we have real internet competition in our area I don't think there's going to be a cost-effective option for high speed internet to support streaming-only TV viewing.

$39.95 inclusive of all taxes??? I must be getting ripped off. I'll have to start shopping around and demand they lower my price. Thanks for the info.

Their pricing depends on your location, so seeing what is available to other people might not have any bearing on the pricing you'll get. The poster upthread paying $50 for Comcast's top pricing, for example... That's what my mom pays, but where I live (just 40 miles or so away) the best price I could negotiate on the second-highest speed tier was $80 plus tax. The difference is that there are three high-speed internet options in her area - UVerse, Wide Open West, and Comcast. Where I live Comcast is the only truly high speed option; DSL is available with a top speed of 1/3 of Comcast's middle-level package but there's no other cable internet provider. So they can and do charge more here.
