DIS Unplugged Show Feedback and Suggestions

I fully agree with this! I felt the same way during that show. I have a feeling that if I would have posted this same post I would have been labeled as a "Debbie Downer" by certain people on these boards, I implied this earlier on this same thread and got DESTROYED by other DISers and even a member of the Podcast team :sad2:, apparently we are only allowed to post positive things or we are immediately labeled bad apples.. Thank you for posting this mcd, this is great feedback for the DIS Podcast team..

I just wanted to chime in here as the mod on the Unplugged forum. Both positive AND negative feedback are welcome. In fact, that is why Dustin started this thread. Please do not feel as if you cannot share your thoughts. As long as the do not violate DIS Posting Guidelines (politeness would be nice too ;) ), then there is no issue.

When you guys talk about the top thread segment, are you guys referring to when Pete was gone and they team kind of just breezed through the list?
I'd imagine they just didn't have the time to delve into the threads and have a big discussion like when Pete usually does.

But, I mean, the title of the threads say it all for the most part.

It was the DIS Unplugged Episode #829 from 7/14/15 hosted by JL (Same show as the controversial topics that Pete made a statement about on future episode). One of the main segments on this show was a discussion about the "Top 10 Threads on the DIS Boards" and none of the Podcasters seemed to be in tune with the boards, for most of the segment they were just reading of the names of the threads and asking each other if they knew what they were about, they were all clueless. This is very disappointing.

I find that always happens other then Pete knowing a little bit about the thread the rest at the table are clueless about it. As they said they don't have the time to read through all the threads on the dis.

For that segment, only the person reading the top ten threads needs to be aware and s/he'd only have to read a page or two, or even just the opening post, of ten threads. It's not a lot of work to be prepared for that segment. Everyone at the table doesn't need to do it. They don't all read the news stories ahead of time or do they?

Anyone else a little put off by JL minimizing World Showcase in last week's segment? We get it, it's not the actual country. But it represents a taste of the culture, the dining, the architecture... and most of them are spectacularly detailed and themed. I was a little surprised to hear a Disney die-hard label one of the best pavilions in the whole area nothing more than "fake Japan".

I just heard that episode this morning (long-run Sunday) and I completely agree! Her crack about "Made in China" didn't make any sense, either, because a lot of Disney merchandise is made in China, including most, if not all, of the pins. Her comments didn't make any sense to me.

I would love for the team to do a World Showcase shopping bracket!

While we're on the topic, I would have included the gift shop from Expedition Everest over Zuri's Sweets, for the same reason that Mitsukoshi is so excellent. The Himalayan goods are beautiful, unique, and match the theme as well as the Tower of Terror and Haunted Mansion gift shops.

Sure it did. She was talking about something she found in the JAPAN pavilion. I've made the same comment myself. One time I was looking at something in the Norway pavilion and it was made in Turkey. Not very authentic. If I want a souvenir of Japan, I'd like it to be something that is actually from Japan.

Personally I thought both of her comments were completely valid.
It's IS fake Japan. It's not the real Japan, that's a fact, and very plain to see. Yeah it might be a good replica, or taste of it, but you don't go into world showcase and then tell your friends you visited Japan.
And while yes, a lot of stuff is made in China, I'd like to have something authentic at least.

I must be missing something. Because I didn't remember anyone being "destroyed" I went back through this entire thread to see where you posted and were then "destroyed" including by a "member of the podcast team." The only thing I could find was where you posted (among other points):

Interact More with Fans! I have noticed that the members of the podcast rarely engage with fans and listeners, especially online, I have seen forum threads addressed to specific members of the podcast and that go unanswered and ignored. I find it hard to believe that the DIS boards are so busy that the team cannot "keep up" with your online community. At least have a webmaster or representative of the team respond to these threads and make your fans feel like you guys actually care about your listeners that take the time to participate on the forums!

A member of the podcast team responded:

3. This is the one that made want to respond. We do several shows a week. We participate in meets all over the country. We hold parties for our listeners in really cool places (Diagon Alley). We book cruises and travel with 700 hundred of our listeners and friends. We are out and about and encourage people to come and say hello when they see us. We met 8 yesterday at Chef Mickeys. Almost all of us are on Facebook. Almost all of us are on Twitter. We ask our listeners to email us and we respond when we can. We have done shows where we talk about our personal lives. We have laughed and cried and loved and lost and shared it all with our listeners. I am here responding to you now. if this is not enough to show you that we care....I'm pretty sure that nothing posted on these boards will fill that void.

You then responded:

3. You bring up a valid point about the meets, I was more so basing my statement on online interaction as I currently do not reside in Florida and have hence not had the opportunity to experience the in-person meets, I plan to hopefully move back to Florida in the coming year and hope to be able to participate in some of these events in the near future!

Keep doing what you do! You have just won me over as your newest fan!

Is this what you mean by "destroyed" or am I overlooking a post?

The fact that something Japanese was made in China doesn't make it less authentically Japanese, any more than something American made in China is less authentically American. I just picked up seven random Disney items in my apartment and six of them were made in China (pin, Vinylmation, plush, picture frame, puzzle, Olszewski box). The seventh item was a pair of Mickey ears and it was made in Thailand. JL may feel that the Co-op is a better shop than Mitsukoshi, but if her reason is that she picked up a random object and it was made in China, that's a weak argument, because a lot of Disney items are made in China (and Thailand), too. It's possible that everything that's sold in the Co-op is actually made in America, but I'm not even sure that's true of the American Adventure pavilion in Epcot. Does anyone know if that's the case? I'm curious, but my next visit to Epcot is months away and I probably won't even remember to check.

All of the items in Mitsukoshi are authentic. If you mean that you'd like to have something made in Japan, there are plenty of items in there that are made in Japan. JL mentioned picking up one item that was marked "Made in China." I've lived in Japan and have visited many times and have shopped at Mitsukoshi there. Mitsukoshi is authentically Japanese (except, maybe, the pearl thing - I don't remember seeing that anywhere in Japan) and I love going there, because I feel a little bit like I'm home again. If I didn't have Japanese markets where I live, I would stock up on food, there, too.

To be honest, I'm like JL, I probably wouldn't go nuts buying souvenirs there because while I'm sure they're very cool, I'm in disney, have never visited Japan and would feel weird having a japanese item that is supposed to signify a place I've visited but yet, I haven't.
I was having a discussion with my sister yesterday that I wouldn't even want anything from DL for the 60th because I didn't visit for the 60th, same theory for me.

I always mean to buy something in there, but then I'm like naaahh.
Usually its one of those sand/rock gardens or bonzai tree and then rationalize it like "i can it cheaper at the store at home".

I agree. That's part of why we love shopping there. You just need to pay attention to what you're buying. For example, Ryno pointed out that the Power Rangers merchandise is all the American line of toys, not the Japanese line, so you won't find anything there that isn't available at your local Toys R Us.

On the other hand, my daughter is a big Studio Ghibli fan and Mitsukoshi has a lot of Japanese merchandise that you can't find anywhere else in the US, or at least not very easily. We've bought quite a bit of that.

We love that store and spend time (and money) there every trip. Just don't think that everything in every country pavilion is actually from that country. It is not.

I don't consider items purchased in Epcot to be souvenirs of visiting that country. I consider them to be souvenirs of visiting Disney World, no different than items bought at MouseGear or Emporium or World of Disney.

Of course! No one buys something from World Showcase thinking it's a souvenir from that country!

I have been to Paris twice in the last few years but bought a
Champs-Élysées magnet for the fridge in World Showcase because it was cheaper (Euro to dollar) and it would not eat valuable baggage space on an international flight.
