Sell me (or not) on an All-Star resort

Personally, there is no difference to me between all stars and pop. Same thing. If you are ok with pop you'll be ok with all stars.

Disagree personally. I liked Pop and AoA much better the All Star Music. There is nothing wrong with the All Stars; I just preferred the busing, layout, theming, etc. of the other two. But you will be okay at All Stars, OP; they are perfectly acceptable.

Count me with the people who prefer All Stars over POP.

When I was at POP last year it just seemed that all the public areas were always busy, no matter what time of day or night. The only time the food court wasn't chaotic was when it first opened. One night I was hungry and went over about a half hour before it was supposed to close and it was still crowded and chaotic. Thank goodness I had a rental car and could go to the Taco Bell drive through.

My stay at All Star Movies the year prior seemed much more relaxed. It was generally quiet. I stopped going in pools at WDW because they're usually mobbed with kids but the pool in the Mighty Duck section at Movies seemed to primarily attract adults who were more interested in sunning themselves. I wished I had brought a swim suit. Since I was in the duck section I actually used Music's bus stop and food court as they were closer. I commented at the time that it was almost like having a preferred location because it was so close to the bus stop and food court but not paying for it. I really enjoyed that food court and was pleasantly surprised at the bus service. It seemed like whenever I showed up at the bus stop, the bus arrived just a few minutes later.

Staying at ASMu for ten nights this year.

There's a part of me that will always be at All-Star Sports. I've stayed there many times, and there's just such a good vibe in the pool area there. They play Beach Boy songs, and it's surfboard themed, and everybody is just having fun. Nice memories there. I like the gift shops at the All-Stars better than the Pop gift shop too, seems more like a real gift shop than just an area that you walk through that happens to have stuff for sale, lol.

I can only speak for All Star Sports but we have had no problems with the resort at all. We prefer the mods but have stayed at Sports 3 times now and have had a pleasant stay each time!

We have stayed at all values and POP and we used to love POP. Ever since the free slushies went away, the food court menu seemed to change and the price is higher, we could take it or leave it. Next trip is All Star Music. As far as convenience All Star Sports was the best. Everything seemed very close in a standard room.

Thanks for the quick reply. I would love to stay in All Stars to save the money. I have stayed at Pop twice now, and I really liked that a lot. I am a big baseball fan, so All Star Sports looks really nice. I have read comments over the years, about how these resorts have gotten run down. I wonder when was the last time they were refurbished. I also really liked the Food Court at Pop. Is the food court options at the All Stars similar?

The resorts are NOT run down. Period. I stay in at least 1 AS per year and I've never seen significant maintenance or wear and tear issues.

Food at AS food court is very similar, minus the grilled flatbreads.

When do Pop Warner Football go the All Sports value?
What about the cheerleader competition staying at values ?

We are thinking of May 1 to May 15.
Any teenage groups also staying at value resorts?
That could break a decision. :-)

I think you're o.k. in May. Pop Warner is usually around the first weekend in December. I'm less clear on the cheer leading group but I'm thinking February. I'm sure someone will come along and correct me if that's wrong.

We have enjoyed Sports a lot. It's usually the cheapest, and it's nice that it's the first drop-off and pick-up on the bus line. Food Court worked great for us, and while I don't remember the specific differences between it and Pop, I do remember ordering the same Bounty Breakfast platter and some other usual items at both places.

If price is the main concern, definitely go with one of the All Star Resorts. i have stayed in two different ones. One time it was just me and my wife and it was a relaxing trip, but the second time I had my grand kids with us and the crowded conditions both at the resort and on the Disney buses was terrible. You and a grown daughter should be fine. I would recommend Sports since it seemed to have better bus service.

We stayed at ASMu once and it was fine for the first five nights during the week as it was quiet and pretty obvious that it was no where near full. Near the end of our stay some very large groups with lots of teens checked in, the noise level went way up and the food court and pools became crazy busy and loud. Time to go home!

We were lucky, but now I am very cautious when booking an on site resort to do my best to choose one that does not cater to large groups. The two trips since then have been at POFQ and Art of Animation, both of which were great and I booked them at good discounts on Orbitz. I would rather pay a few dollars more which in the overall scheme of a Disney trip is a very small percentage of the total trip, than be unhappy.

I stayed at Sports in Feb and at Pop in March. I have to say I liked Sports much more than I expected. We had a room toward the back with a pond behind it. It was pretty and there was an alligator there that posed for pics for us lol. The foodcourt wasn't bad, in fact it had a nice fixins bar that Pop didn't have. We did some hotel hopping and found a $12 bottle of wine at Contemporary (which is actually sold at many of the resorts gift shops) and we bought cold cuts and pita bread for the room. There's no coffee pot but I brought a small Farberware with me. The rooms now have small beverage fridges and the new decor is actually nicer than at Pop. I always like Pop for the lake, but found the pond to be pretty and peaceful at Sports. I've stayed at all levels of Disney resorts and enjoyed them all. If you aren't going to be spending much time in the room anyway, the Allstars are just as good as Pop.

Have only stayed at the All Star Music; just before heading to the Disney Fantasy over Christmas last year. It was our first and only time at a value and I liked it. Have no problem recommending it and would stay there again. I am an early riser and like to walk around the resorts with a cup of coffee in my hand enjoying the quiet saying good morning to the other early risers. Made my way around, I liked the whole theme of the resort, the icons, the colors, the size of the dining area (had no problem finding a seat), and the CM are just as friendly as at any WDW resort I have been to.

We stayed at ASMusic once just me and DH a while back they had a really great staff, we enjoyed our stay. We had a car so the CM asked us if we were planning on using the car to get around we book a lot of Resort TS so I said yes she then made a great suggestion on a room that was close to parking.

For me I don't think there is a resort on property I wouldn't stay at.

My worst ever overnight stay anywhere in the US was at an All Star resort, this year. It was the worst night I have ever had away from home and I would never do that again even if it were free, which it was because it was so bad that it was refunded! Moderates are so much better, and only a few bucks more if you shop them. I would rather stay off property than spend a minute in an All Star. If you're looking for a value stay, I've heard nothing but good things about Pop Century but I've never stayed there.

It was:

  • Dirty, hair all over the place
  • Loud, tour groups love to make noise all night!
  • Full of broken furniture
  • The power outlets didn't work right
  • The shower backed up
  • The toilet ran all night
  • The beds were uncomfortable, if the floor was cleaner I would have slept on it
  • Service was awful, almost 5 hours from calling the front desk to the delivery of extra things requested - meaning delivery at 4AM!
Just stay home, you'll enjoy it more than staying at an All Star Resort.

Wow! Sorry you had such a bad experience. But I think you can see from the posts on this thread, and, in fact, on this entire discussion board, that your experience is pretty rare.

I also must add that telling someone to "Just stay home" isn't particularly helpful. Especially on a discussion board where the entire focus is planning a visit to Walt Disney World.

Is it rare, or just rare to people who have stayed and are members of disboards? Put my "just stay home" comment in context, staying home could be a better experience.
