Who has done this and can offer some info? We usually travel Manchester to Orlando with Virgin so we don't have any idea where to start when it comes to Dublin so... which airlines should I be looking at? What is this strange thing I hear about US customs?

What is this strange thing I hear about US customs?
That is US Pre-clearance which is available at Dublin Terminal 2 ONLY. There is a special USA departure level which is accessed from a stairs down at Terminal 2 departure gate area. USA departures get a call to go to Pre Clearance about 2 hours before departure time. Once this call goes out, USA bound passengers go down to Pre Clearance, where they go through US Immigration with USA Homelands Security. You will get everything done, the fingerprint, the eyescan and they will stamp your passport. You then go through a second bag check and body scan. Once through Pre Clearance you are technically in USA so you are unable to back to the shopping and restaurant level. There are shops, food areas and toilets after Pre Clearance but not as much as in the main shopping area.

Once you land in USA, you just go straight to baggage claim, the same as a USA domestic flight.

Here goes........ BadPinkTink as more or less said it all.

We used to Fly through Gatwick with VA but now we go through Dublin with Aer lingus the pre customs clearance is fab and we all really like Aer Lingus too. Theres a good selection of food etc before you clear customs and not much at the gate. If you do come the night before theres a good selection of hotels at reasonable rates

We did this too - the US preclearance was the best thing ever. Coming back via Dublin was a killer as we waited around 5-6 hours at Dublin due to changing plane for Manchester. We found there were no comfy seats to sit either as they all had fixed armrests.

The main airlines that fly to Orlando out of Dublin are Delta, Continental and Aer Lingus. I know Aer Lingus does direct flights the other two you'll probably have to fly to Newark or Atlanta first and then on to Orlando.
