Pillow family Alaska/Canada Mega Trip!

Just gorgeous photos!! The scenery....the orcas!......the glaciers......ahhh so fantastic!!!

And its prettier in person!!
We didn't care for the Frozen menu either.

I think I ordered the salmon that night, which was a mistake. In general, we found that all fish dishes onboard were dry except for the rare tuna (which is hard to ruin).

you know you want to book it... do it already, lol! ;)

how many days until you cruise?

Oh yes, how badly do I want to book Alaska?!!! Unfortunately with our plummeting CDN dollar, the exchange (at the moment) adds another $1800 plus to our cruise fare....as our dollar plummets so do our hopes of doing Alaska :(

We cruise in just under 60 days!!! Still very excited about that one and will probably plunk down $200 for a placeholder at the very least if we don't book Alaska ;-)

Loving your report! We are leaving in a month so seeing all the amazing photos is getting me super excited!!!! Thanks!

Day 16 – Cruise day 6 (Ketchikan)

Our arrival this morning into Ketchikan was a late one, which enabled us to hit the gym before docking and to take our time waking up and getting ready.

Today’s planned adventure was the most anticipated for me. I had contacted Carlin Air 14 months ahead of our cruise to inquire about a trip to Anan Creek. Anan is a place where there is a huge salmon run, and consequently where both brown and black bear congregate to feast. Anan is accessible from Ketchikan by floatplane (or from Wrangell by boat), and a limited number of permits are granted by the Forest Service for any given day. Lucky for us, Laura at Carlin Air was great to work with. She obtained our permits at the October, 2014 lottery, so we were set (there is a 2nd lottery in Feb/March where more permits are granted for those unlucky the first time around). I should mention that I struggled with whether to do this trip or not due to the high price, but in hindsight, I’m so glad we splurged. This was to be my favorite day of the entire trip!

Unfortunately, today’s weather was forecasted to be rain, rain, and more rain! Sigh. We walked off the ship and met Laura at the Visitor’s Center. She drove us the 5 minutes to the Carlin Air office, where we prepared to board the float plane. Our plane held six passengers, and we were joined by another couple who was also cruising DCL. Soon we were off! I had to smile at our young pilot’s music choice . . . we were flying along viewing gorgeous Alaska scenery to AC/DC’s Back in Black- a moment that will be stuck in my memory forever! Our foggy flight to Anan took about 45 minutes.

After we landed and taxied over to where we would disembark, we could see seals in the water swimming around. I felt like we had been transported to another land entirely – gorgeous here!

A ranger spoke with us briefly about the short hike we would take to the viewing platform. We were told to leave any food in the bear proof container at the trail head. We were also told to walk fairly close together in case we encountered a bear on the trail (bears see a group as one large object which is more intimidating to them than one lone person) and to make lots of noise while walking. We saw lots of bear scat, but no bears en route. Here are some pictures taken on the way to the viewing platform . . .

Once at the viewing platform, we had about 90 minutes to spend viewing and photographing the bears. It was both mesmerizing and entertaining to watch the bears attempt to catch fish. Its not as easy for them as you might think! An added bonus was that there were quite a few eagles here. They hang around hoping to eat salmon scraps the bears leave behind. Our 90 minutes felt like 10, and sadly it was time to leave. I could have stayed here all day in this magical place. I was a tiny bit disappointed that there were no brown bears here today (only black). Perhaps we’ll just have to return.

Return trip

Once back in Ketchikan, we stopped briefly back at the Wonder to grab some food as we were all hungry. Then we grabbed maps at the Visitor’s Center and went on a walking tour of the town. We decided to explore Creek Street and followed the walking tour outlined in one of our maps. Unfortunately, the further we walked away from the ship, the harder it rained. We explored for an hour or two and were pretty soaked by the time we returned to the ship.

We were back in time to see the 6:15 performance of Marcus Monroe. We generally enjoy the variety acts onboard, but I’m conflicted about this one. Some parts of his show were embarrassingly bad, but I found myself chuckling (while shaking my head) at other parts. Maybe I would have appreciated this show more if I came with wine in hand. Wait! I DID come with wine in hand . . . but I guess it wasn’t enough! View at your own risk.

Afterwards, we went down to Wavebands to watch Rich Purpura’s 7:30 family show. Now THIS was a great show. I laughed so hard my stomach hurt. Even though it was a family show, his humor appeals more to an adult audience I think. I’m sorry we missed his adult show earlier during the cruise.

After laughing it up, we headed to dinner, followed by a casual quick walk around the ship before bed.

Day 17 – Cruise Day 7 (at sea) + Reflections

Unfortunately, I have no notes and no pictures from today (plus a bad memory). Of course, there was much lazing around on the verandah + a gym workout for DH and I. An unexpected bonus today was a presentation by Scott Foster, who lectured about his 30 day Denali climb back in 1965 (complete with photos). I could have listened to him for hours. So fascinating!

We visited the Future Cruise Desk early before lines began to form and booked two rooms for a possible future trip on the Dream. Later that evening, we attended the Walt Disney Theatre show “Dreams,” which was fantastic! After the show, we quickly packed before heading off to one last dinner.

Speaking of dinner, I promised a few summary thoughts about the food onboard . . . in general, we found the food to be “hit or miss.” My favorites from the main dining rooms were:

· the truffle purses appetizer in Animator’s Palate

· the tuna nicoise salad in Tritons

· some other salad topped with rare spicy tuna – which I think was served in Parrot Cay??

· Warm sticky date pudding with sauce – DELICIOUS!

Super helpful, right?? Sorry! I need to take better food notes next time. We found the fish to be dry in general onboard, but the rare tuna dishes were fantastic! Surprisingly, I thought the foods from the “lite” menu tasted best. And as usual, the coffee stinks (except for that in Cove Café). Note: we brought our French press and coffee with us from home and made our own coffee to have with breakfast.

Since the cruise commentary is coming to an end, I feel compelled to touch on two topics that have been the object of much Disboard discussion: #1 - the condition of the Wonder, and #2 - the DCL Alaska itinerary.

First, we did not notice issues in the public areas on the Wonder at all. The ship was beautiful! Having said that, it is possible that we didn’t spend enough time in any one place long enough to notice issues. However, our stateroom (and especially our verandah) was in need of help. The cabinets in our room were scratched and dented, and the verandah had lots of scratches that had been poorly painted over in addition to quite a bit of rust. I don’t want to dwell on this too much because it really didn’t impact the enjoyment of our cruise. However, the verandah issues could have and should have been addressed previously. My parent’s stateroom seemed to be in better shape. I did wonder (since we were upgraded to our verandah room at the port) if our particular room was held back from inventory and only filled as a last resort. Who knows. I have to assume the upcoming dry dock will resolve all issues. On a positive note, the beds had just recently been replaced, and they were sooooo comfortable!!

Also, many have said they would not cruise DCL since they don’t travel through Glacier Bay. I personally would LOVE to see Glacier Bay, but I just can’t imagine a place more beautiful than Tracy Arm! Perhaps they are equally beautiful but different?? Hopefully, one of these days we will get the chance to cruise Glacier Bay, and I will report back here – ha. So stick around for 10 years or so . . .

Some reflections on the difference between our DCL experience on this cruise versus the other DCL cruises we’ve done to date . . . All previous cruises (except for the Med) have been Bahamas/Caribbean trips. Especially on our first few trips when the kids were younger, we enjoyed many Disney activities. We cruised primarily for the cruise experience as opposed to the ports. This cruise for us was more about wildlife and scenery; therefore, we did not participate is as many Disney specific activities - we even skipped shows (gasp). I do think (at least for us) that the cruise line makes less of a difference on a trip where the views and ports are the focus. And lesson learned . . . I would not cruise Alaska again without a balcony. It added a tremendous amount of enjoyment to this vacation for us!

And finally . . . things we could not have done without . . .

· The verandah (just had to say it one last time!)

· Our raincoats (I also had ponchos packed but we never used them)

· Good walking/hiking shoes (mine were not water proof – just an old pair of trail running shoes)

· Warm clothes for Tracy Arm day

· Binoculars – a good pair with large lenses

· Camera (with sports mode)

· Mom and B – So happy they were able to come with us!

Up tomorrow . . . disembarking, Once Upon a Time, and over-indulging at the Fairmont!

Day 18

Before breakfast this morning, DH stopped by Guest Services to pay the balance of our bill, and he also swung by Shutters to purchase a couple of pictures. Since we had late dinner, our assigned breakfast time this morning was late as well. None of us were in a hurry to leave, so we met at 8:15 in Tritons and enjoyed a slow leisurely breakfast. There was a long line to leave the ship, so we stayed in Tritons as long as possible before moving. Finally, we joined the quickly moving line, and we were off the ship in no time. A beautiful sunny day greeted us. I was SO thankful to see some sunshine!

After customs, we separated from Mom and B, who were doing some independent travel for a few days. We were headed to the Fairmont Airport for just one night before flying home the next morning. The cab line moved quickly, and we arrived early at the Fairmont. We chose this hotel since it connects directly to the airport, and since our flight would depart early. I had booked a Gold Level room at a promotional pre-paid rate. Even though we paid more for Gold, we were able to eat in the lounge for dinner and breakfast as well as grab snacks during the day. With two teenagers, it was well worth it! Our room wasn’t quite ready, so we waited in the lounge sipping coffee and using wifi for about 30-45 minutes. We had great views of the runways. All in all, I’m glad we booked this hotel. What a nice way to end a great vacation!

After settling in, we took a cab to the town of Steveston, which was about a 20 minute ride from the airport. Steveston is a charming waterfront town with many nice shops and restaurants, but MOST IMPORTANTLY, its where Once Upon a Time is filmed! We stopped at the Visitor’s Center to get the scoop on whats what and where to go. With map and camera in hand, we did a fabulous job of playing the part of cheesy tourist. We had a blast here! For those of you familiar with the show, here are some pictures you may recognize . . .

We loved this town - show or no show! Finally, pooped, we caught a cab back to the hotel. We veged out for the rest of the evening – going back and forth to the lounge for appetizers and dessert. We went to bed early knowing that we had to arise at 4:00am for a 6:40am flight home. Sunset view from our room . . .

Day 19 – Are we there yet?

I hate early flights! Our wake-up call came at 4:00am, and breakfast arrived at 4:20 (since it was too early for our complimentary lounge breakfast, they delivered it to our room for us). We were out the door at 4:40 and in line at Delta at 4:45, checked bags, security, customs . . . you know the drill. The entire process took about an hour, and we had lots of time to spare before boarding. The flight to Minneapolis was non-eventful, but once there, the fun began. Our flight from Minneapolis to La Guardia was delayed . . . and delayed . . . and delayed. Once finally in La Guardia, our flight home was delayed, and delayed again, and finally CANCELLED! Yippee! (yep - definite sarcasm there)

We were given a hotel voucher and waited FOREVER for the hotel shuttle. We checked into our hotel room after midnight and promptly fell asleep.

Day 20 – I forgot what my house looks like

Thankfully, all went smoothly this morning with flights, and we were home by 2:00pm.

Great trip! Great memories! I want to go back!

The End!

That looks like an amazing excursion!!!! I would do that one in a heartbeat if I weren't terrified of flying in a float plane :P But amazing shots of the bears!!

Pajo's is our family FAVE for fish and chips; there are several locations throughout the lower mainland (we used to live in Port Moody and there was one 5 minutes from us) so whenever we are in Steveston Pajo's is a must!

Sorry your trip home was such a hassle :( I wanted to stay at the Fairmont Airport hotel when we arrive home from our trip this Oct; our flight gets in at 11:40pm and our dog kennel is 20 minutes from the airport so we figured we'd just stay local, get the dog in the morning then drive home but DH said NO to the Fairmont so we're staying at Days Inn a few minutes away from the airport. Grrr! lol

I have to admit, I was a little nervous about the float plane too. A plane had just crashed a few weeks prior to us being there, and I was trying not to think about it, as it was tragic but rare. I was amazed at how smooth our landing was - MUCH smoother than a big jet landing on a tarmac. If you can get yourself to Wrangell, you can catch a BOAT to Anan, which is on my growing travel to do list.

Ha - good for your hubbie! I'm usually the frugal one in everyday life. This was a far cry from our usual Comfort Suites! Its almost better that you don't stay there cause you will be ruined for life!!

Wow! What an adventure. Two questions, when using your press pot for coffee, did you just order room service for a pot of hot water or did you get hot water from the drink station? And second question, do you remember about how much the cab cost from the Fairmont to Steveston?

Many thanks!

Just checking our credit card bill . . . after converting to USD, the ride out was $25.87 and the ride back was $29.41. We loved Steveston and wished we had stayed there over Vancouver.

Regarding the french press, we've done both in the past, but most of the time, we would walk up to Beach Blanket with the press and fill it with hot water from the drink station before going through the buffet line. I had pre packed little sandwich bags with the right amount of coffee for each "serving." We've done this on the last few cruises and it works nicely.

After settling in, we took a cab to the town of Steveston,

Now we have to go Alaska again. :love1: I told Rob, spouse, about Steveston and he agreed, we have to go again and visit Steveson. I have not watched "Once upon a Time" but it is on my list of things to do next week during our downtime at WDW. Rob has watched most of the shows and is a huge fan of the show so he was quite pleased when I told him about Steveston.

That is what I love about reading trip reports. Not only are they entertaining but they promote new ideas for future trips.

Was your son also able to hang in the Vibe or has he already met that magical number of 18? One of the reasons we cruised this year instead of waiting was that Sarah (daughter) wanted one more chance to hang in the vibe.

If you call the Visitor's Center in Steveston, they can tell you when they will be filming (we just missed it by 4 days). I think DH and I enjoy the show more than the kids!

Yes - DS was able to visit Vibe. We strategically planned as well so that he would be just shy of his 18th birthday. I thought it would be nice if both of my kids could go together, so it worked out nicely.

Loved ready your trip report. We sail next June on the Wonder and can't wait. I wanted to find out - what was
Your original stateroom and what stateroom did you end up with? We also booked an ocean view, not wanting to pay the additional $2500 for the 4 of us. I was happy to hear the upgrade worked for you. Did you find the waters
To be calm on your sailing? Thanks again for all of the great information and beautiful pictures
