Early Vaccines for Baby Before Trip?

Hi Parents!

We will be heading to Disney at the end of September. Our youngest will be 11 months when we travel, and will therefore not have gotten her one year vaccines. Based on the recent measles outbreak at Disneyland, my husband is pushing to give the baby her vaccines early, just to combat any measles or chicken pox outbreaks. The problems? I don't want to give the baby anything she doesn't need. Our insurance won't cover the vaccines because they are before the 'recommended' inoculation timeframe. Also, the vaccines will basically not count because she's having them before her first birthday, so she'll have to get them again when they actually count. All my worries aside, I'm happy to do whatever is best for the babe. Has anyone done this? Does it seem like overkill or just being proactive? I would love to hear from other parents!!

I asked my doctor (we'll be doing WDW when the boy is 11 mos) and they said that they generally don't for domestic trips but would if we traveled internationally.

I've considered lying and saying we're going overseas but I've seen too much House and know when you lie to your doctor, someone ends up in a coma. :) I'll just spend a couple weeks overreacting to every cough or glimmer of diaper rash.

I actually have talked to her doctor. She said we could vax or not and most likely be fine, but said she probably would if it was her child. We do know that we need to go in a couple weeks ahead for full potency. I'm in no way asking for medical advice; I just wondered what other parents had experienced or considered!

I actually posed a similar question to my pediatrician. My DD will be 6 mos when we go in November and I was worried about immune status. We decided to go with the normal vaccine schedule and I plan on baby wearing for most of the trip to decrease contact with strangers. My dr also said that if you are nursing (and mom is vaccinated), baby is more protected too.

Like pp, I will likely also fret over every sniffle following the trip too!! I think it's a normal mom reaction though. :)

You should definitely consult your doctor, but we took our DS to Disney at 3 months old and our pedi was fine with it with only his 2 month shots behind him.

The measles outbreak was declared over months ago...and it was in CA, not FL....I don't think you really have anything to worry about.

FWIW, our DS had several flights, stops in NY and NJ and a whole week at Disney and not so much as a sniffle. I think your babe will be fine. :)

Check with your doctor, the ped. probably won't do them early.
