Fred and Wilma 'Wonder' Through the Panama Canal - With a Couple of Stowaways

This looks like a really fun day. I love the sound of the of the gin Cosmo. As much as I like Tequila, I don't think that Tequila and Jalopeno Martini would have been for me either. The girls dinner sounds like a great idea. I can't believe that they did not even have Stitch out on Pirate Night. What a shame that you felt ill at the end of the night, but I am glad you felt better soon. The towels that you received as a gift were amazing.

Great night, apart from you feeling sick.

Chapter 21 – Mum’s the word

Sunday May 10th

Today’s navigator:

I had a really broken night – some very strange things woke me up. First it was the wave phone flashing with a message to plug it in to the charger. I couldn't find the charging station and had to find my mobile phone to get enough light to locate it on the desk top. Next, it was the stateroom phone flashing to say we had a message. I am 99% sure it wasn't flashing when we went to bed which meant somebody had left us a message in the middle of the night. I threw a towel over the phone. And then, in the early hours, the cup that Mari had given us started flashing (it had a light built in to the bottom). I couldn’t switch it off so took it into the bathroom. It was like a mini disco in there.

I eventually managed to fall asleep with no more interruptions. When I woke up, I checked the clock and it was 6.40 so I decided to get up and go walking. It was just Andrea, Kim and I this morning and we had a very pleasant walk around deck 4 for an hour. After we walked, I went back to wash and change before going up to the pool. There was literally nobody around. I jumped right in to the pool and swam a few laps. The water was really cold but it was already pretty warm out so it was nice and refreshing.

At about 9.30 there was an announcement that we had changed course and, due to a medical emergency, we were now heading to Puerto Quetzal in Guatemala. We were expected to arrive about 10.30 so, at that time, Kim and I went up to Deck 10. It was obvious that a lot of people were interested in seeing Guatemala.

It soon became apparent that we wouldn’t actually be docking here and instead a small boat came out to meet us.

It took a while for them to manoeuvre into a safe position to offload the sick passenger (we later found out it was a woman) and her family.

Just after 11, I went back to the room to get ready for the Mother’s Day lunch which the lovely Mari had organised for us. We all met on the steps outside Triton’s and Mari’s husband, Jeff, took a group picture for us.

Triton’s had reserved 6 tables for our group of 37 and Mari had very kindly bought sparkly handbag mirrors for each of us.

The crew did a great job of taking our orders too, they were so well organised. I know I shouldn’t be surprised by this but I really was impressed at how well they looked after us.

I had smoked turkey salad to start, followed by pork ribs with French fries.

I wasn’t going to have a dessert but Julie had to leave to go to her dance class with Jim so I got to eat her dessert, which was apple tart tatin. It was delicious so I was secretly glad she had left – only kidding Julie ;)

It was such a fabulous lunch. Thanks Mari for doing such a great job of organising it :worship:

Hi Jill, I'm going to hope that's a typo and you meant trip, NOT tripe :rotfl2:

It really was a great TRIP, the best! Such nice people and so much fun.

No, my friend doesn't have an online store but she really should, she is so talented. Yes, that's you Wendy (@runskyhy ) :thumbsup2

Loving the TR update! Lunch looked fab! Were the 'to go' plates from the buffet for dinner? I didn't know that was an option! Excellent!

Ironic that the local Guatemalan boat that came out to meet the ship was named 'Hercules'... ironic but perfect! :boat:

Why thank you for the recreation of your exit from the mixology class! A visual is always appreciated And the CMs certainly add an extra touch with clarifying that you went from here.... to here!

Pirate night looked especially fun matey. pirate:

I had gotten very behind, didn't get any alerts, but just read it all over my lunch break.

I'm very impressed you know what a palindrome is ;-)

Love the bags you and Tee had by the pool.

The necklace you've got on in Animators Palate is that a Pandora?

You look like you are having a fabulous cruise and making great friends and memories.

All caught up again, loving your report, dont want it to end really! I bet you didnt either:thumbsup2

Joh I am back and thought this TR would be finished by now ;) (says she who never writes one!)

I didn't even spot that, how great.

Oh Joh glad you laughed about it lol!!! I don't even have the excuse of being drunk!!:teeth:

Well, why not? ;) Seriously, it really made me laugh.

Cheeky mare, I've got an English GCSE you know, of course I know what a palindrome is. Thanks for the compliments on the bags, we are very lucky to have Wendy to make fabulous things for us.

No, my necklace is not a Pandora - just a cheapy from Sainsburys ;)

I know I keep saying it, but it was such an amazing cruise. And the people were so much fun.

No Sue, believe it or not, two weeks still wasn't enough!

So sorry Mrs, you have inspired me to pull my finger out and get back on it. I am looking forward to reading your trippy when you eventually get round to writing one. Although you don't actually have long enough between trips to do that, do you :p

I am so glad Mari organised the Mothers Day lunch, it was a lot of fun.

Chapter 22 – Sweet treats, good eats and kids club meets

As we left the dining room, we noticed Dug from Up was in the lobby so we had to get a picture. As we made our way aft we saw Gary waiting by the lobby. He was supposed to be meeting Terry but there was no sign of him. Kim decided to go and hunt him down, and Gary and I went up on deck where we watched a group called Paperback Writer who were performing by the family pool.

They were really good but it was so hot sitting there. Gary got some chicken tenders as he hadn’t eaten lunch, then we made our way down to the lobby to meet the others for our galley tour. Vicky was wearing yet another awesome Mickey shirt – I swear she had at least one for every day of the cruise.

As we made our way to the meeting point, we bumped into Woody so Kim, Vicky, Kathleen and I had a picture with him.

The tour started in Tritons, which is themed on the little mermaid and includes an impressive mosaic of King Triton and his daughter, Ariel.

We were taken through the dining room into the galley and learned that the same galley serves both Tritons and Parrot Cay. The chef de cuisine explained to us how the orders are taken and pinned to a board by table number, then the orders for each dish are added up, prepared and placed on the line for the servers to collect.

We saw where recipes for each dish are kept, pictures of how each plate should look (including the anniversary dessert, now just known as ‘Terry’s cake’).

We also saw pictures of all the different outfits for the different themed nights in the dining rooms.

Obviously we had to have a girly galley selfie.

At the end of the tour we were given a couple of chocolate chip cookies each. I had read that these were served warm but ours were not. They still tasted pretty good though. We had the opportunity to ask questions and then we left the galley into the Parrot Cay dining room – pretty cool!

After the tour we went back to the stateroom so that I could get changed (I was still wearing my dress). We had a little surprise waiting for us, in the form of chocolate covered strawberries, a gift from Guest Services.

After dropping some gifts down to the Cadillac Lounge for Pablo, Maylis and Carissa we made our way up to Cove Café, where we had arranged to meet the others. We took the strawberries with us, to share with the group.

I don’t like coffee at all but the fabulous CM was able to make me a cookies and cream frozen coffee drink without the coffee. It tasted just like a milkshake. Surprisingly, Gary didn't like it – he said it was too sweet – but I loved it. And I’m sure it was very low in calories so I didn’t feel at all guilty about drinking the lot.

Terry had some caramel macchi-lacchi thingamabob which he swears tasted great.

We sat and chatted for a little while, mainly about the differences between the ‘British’ and ‘American’ languages. There was much amusement over the word ‘pushchair’, as well as the pronunciation of the words ‘sloth’ and ‘aspartame’.

We decided we all (except Terry, but we made him go anyway) wanted to go and see the show, which was a magician called Magic Dave. It was actually really good and even Terry enjoyed it.

There had been many rumours going around that there was going to be some kind of announcement about a Frozen party coming up later in the cruise and I had been subjected to merciless teasing, given my disdain for the whole hysteria over Frozen. Lo and behold, Clayton announced that there would be a Frozen party held on Cabo San Lucas night and there would also be a scavenger hunt and lots of Frozen merchandise. As I turned to Kim to complain, she fixed me with a piercing glare and said “You will join in with ALL of the Frozen activities, and you will smile, and you will enjoy it”. Well, that told me!

After the show, we went back to the room where we freshened up and got ready for dinner. The guys had already decided they really didn’t want to dress up tonight so Gary was wearing – gasp – shorts! We made our way to the Cadillac Lounge to join some of our group for a pre-dinner drink. Although I was supposed to be having a ‘dry’ day, I couldn’t’ resist the lure of a Chambord Mojito Martini. It was absolutely delicious.

Dinner tonight was the rotational menu in Tritons, my absolute favourite. For appetiser, I ordered the brie (I may or may not have been very cheeky and asked if I could have an extra portion). This is probably my favourite appetiser on the ship but I do have just one small gripe – why do DCL insist on ‘anchoring’ things to the plate with mashed potato. Under each of my brie wedges was a little dollop of mashed potato, which I can only assume was put there to glue the brie to the plate and stop it from sliding around. But it’s just weird!

Still, mashed potato aside, the brie was yummy. Terry also had brie, which he declared ‘nasty’ and offered to me but I was saving myself for the entrée. Kim and Terry had also decided to try the escargots. Kim was not impressed – but said it was because there were mushrooms mixed in with it. I am not sure it was mushrooms; I think that was actually the snail ;)

For my entrée, I had the duck – with chips! Don’t judge, it was delicious. Terry asked me if it was a British thing but I told him, no, I just like chips – or French fries.

Others at our table also had pasta (Julie, I think) and lamb (Jim possibly). Both looked really good too.

Dessert for most people was the soufflé with Grand Marnier sauce. Some people – ahem, Terry – had a crème brulee as well.

According to my notes, I didn’t have dessert. Wait, no, that can’t be right. Jeez, I skipped dessert one night and I still gained 6 lbs, what’s that all about?

After dinner, we bumped into Vicky and decided to get some pictures taken with Mr and Mrs Incredible and Remy. Not sure who took this picture, maybe Gary – serious camera shake…

While we were waiting in line for Remy, Gary and Terry were doing this really silly dance which essentially just involved bending their knees one way and then the other, with their hands in their pockets. I just kept saying to Gary “don’t do the dance” (like Monica says to Chandler in an episode of Friends).

Dinner over, it was time for the adults to take over the Oceaneers Lab. Tonight we were making Flubber! It was actually really gross and I hated having to get my hands dirty (who am I kidding, I got one of the counsellors to make it for me so I didn’t have to) but it was really good fun and we had a real laugh.

ETA: In the interest of full disclosure, Kim has asked me to make it clear to you just how annoying the flubber instructor was. She was very loud, very hyper and had an incredibly annoying Northern accent (sorry Northerners). However, also in the interest of full disclosure, Kim was incredibly tired that night and probably found her slightly (greatly) more annoying than the rest of us.

It was gone midnight when we finished and we all parted ways.

When we got back to the room, we had been left some more gifts – a friendship bracelet from Wanda and a pair of cute cowboy boot earrings from Cathy. Tonight’s towel offering was a rose, accompanied by two Ghirardelli raspberry square chocolates.

It is good to know that they are offering this again. I had heard this had been discontinued.

At the end of the tour we were given a couple of chocolate chip cookies each.

When I did this, I had just come from brunch at Palo so no cookies for me.

What a nice surprise.

Now I am officially jealous. I never got Ghiradelli chocolates on any of our cruises.

The adult's night in the kids clubs looks like a good laugh!
Never done a galley tour, I've asked about them on every cruise we've ever been on and they've always said "we aren't doing any"

Linda, we have done galley tours on all four ships. They are only held on sea days (and not even every sea day) and are on a first come first serve basis. We have sometimes had a CM who would say that there are none scheduled but when we asked for it they would put us on a list and we have been called quite a few times to tell us that there was a tour and when would we like to do it.
Next time - ask to be put on a list and I am sure you will be able to get on a galley tour.
