We'll be in Orlando and I'm looking for a nice beach to spend the day at. I'm hoping to stay within an hour or 90 min from Orlando. Something that is family-oriented, has some restaurants right there at the beach for lunch. Lifeguards on duty. Can you recommend anything?

Thank you!

atlantic (which I hate) or gulf (which is lovely)?

Atlantic - Daytona Beach or Cocoa beach

gulf - clearwater, st petersburg near tampa

think Atlantic is a little bit closer. but for me the gulf is much tamer and therefore nicer. You can actually get in the gulf. Atlantic well for me mostly no getting in that water - a times it seems to attack the beach at times.

Clearwater is our pick, but it's closer to a two hour drive than a 90 minute drive. We think it's worth the extra drive time (nice soft sand, a big wide beach, a pier, restaurants, a happening beach with plenty of people and activities, fun inexpensive mansion/dolphin boat rides, calm waters) -- I really like it there and prefer the gulf to the Atlantic side. Everyone in my family and extended family like to do this one for our beach day from Orlando.

I grew up in Clearwater! We actually plan to spend a day there, as it is. But not a ton of beach time. So I hate to drive back a 2nd day! I do prefer Gulf side.....

Cool -- Could it work out with your plans to stay overnight there one night? We like to stay at Sea Captain Resort on the Bay sometimes that is right across the street from the main beach. And if you have some extra time maybe go to the little rescue facility place and see Winter. Watch Dolphin Tale and maybe even Dolphin Tale 2 too to get everybody interested. Or if you are already doing a long day trip somewhere maybe do a water park day in Orlando instead of a beach day -- lots of great waterparks to choose from.

think I would change my plans and enjoy the beach - otherwise you are doing a lot more driving. Clearwater beach is lovely

Clearwater beach if your staying the night try the Quailty Inn on us 19 it's a little drive from the beach but not to far and the prices are good has a pool ,hot tub,a kids pool ,and is right next to a mini golf places on the beach will cost $100 and up so the short drive will make it worth it lots of places to eat and stores near by.It's a great spot but a bit of drive so you have to give a day to make it worth it . (If your willing to pay a little more in price the Marriott on Sand key is bit on the pricy side but the views are worth every penny)

Our family absolutely LOVES Cocoa beach!!! lots of stores Ron Johns..etc to wander around in! Cocoa Beach Pier is awesome.

We love jetty park, nice beach, good food, you can see the cruise ships, and not as touristy as cocoa.

Following...

My first and only day trip to the Gulf Coast from Orlando was spent at Honeymoon Island State Park in Dunedin, April 2014. We'd chosen it as it had been rated one of the top U.S. beaches that year. It was lovely, with silky white sand...Beach umbrella, chair, and kayak rentals available on the beach...nice little snack bar and public facilities...signs entering the park that warned of rattle snakes [!], not one of which I saw, thank goodness! With an early start, the traffic wasn't bad at all, however, the drive out of town at 3:00 P.M., or so, to the main highway toward Tampa was a bit of a crawl - stop & go with more traffic lights than I care to sit through after a day in the sand and sun. The purportedly ninety-minute return drive became more like 2.75 hours...

As a New Englander, I've grown up visiting more rugged Atlantic beaches. While those hold their own brand of splendor for me, it was heavenly to experience the more serene, tropical sands of the Gulf Coast, and I can't wait to return. If I can swing it this trip, I'm planning to hit either St. Pete, or Clearwater, based upon recommendations I've seen here and elsewhere, but - now that I'm recalling the slog of the afternoon return drive - I'm wondering whether or not it's inevitable to encounter the same stop and go drive with either of those beaches?

Is there a Gulf Coast beach within 2 hours of Orlando that has less of a busy retreat for us day-trippers? Or is that merely the nature of the experience?

Have fun, OP! :fish:

Stayed at Anna Maria Island at the tiptop of Longboat Key, great beach. Not touristy, like Siesta Key.
