Hi I sometimes use my wife American Express credit card to buy stuff because hers collect more Pts most of the times i simply use pin number

Today I went to Michaels store and used hers but I ended up swiping the AE credit card (instead of inserting the card) and the store seller give me recipt to sign , I said actually it belong to my wife , the staff said its ok so i sign my own signature.

My question is ..what will happen to all these signed receipts.?

I'm not sure what you're asking about what will happen to the signed receipts, but it's always been my understanding that you sign your own signature when using someone else's card. To sign their name would be forgery.

They're supposed to collect them and retain them in case there's a fraud claim. The signature is supposed to be a defense for the merchant in case there's a dispute claiming a card was stolen or it's an unauthorized use. A lot of retailers are moving to electronic signature collection, so it's easier to simply keep it in an electronic database.

I don't know if anything will happen but just wanted to say you can be added as an authorized user. You'll get your own car with your name on it and it will be under her account. She'll get points for your purchases. Amex even gives authorized users a different card number and you can see which card makes which purchases so it's really easy to keep track of who is buying and spending

Nothing will happen unless there is an investigation (initiated by your wife, the card company, or the merchant). It's unlikely but it can happen.

Most CC companies will let the account owner select additional cardholder(s) so you don't have to switch-a-roo all the time!

The Merchant in this case should have declined the card, and probably taken the card from you as it's not yours. I would be worried about using my card there in the future seeing as if it was a stolen card, they'd have just accepted it!

Thank god Chip and Pin is coming the the states to prevent merchants like this not being vigilant.

Don't get too excited about chip cards. I think most US cards will be chip and signature so there's no pin and you still have to sign.

Thats mad considering most stores have a massive terminal with a keypad on it. Card fraud must be a massive issue over there. Over here it cut down as soon as it was implemented, the bank I worked for at the time saw huge savings both in fraud not happening, but also not needing as many staff to work all the fraud claims.

Yeah it seems like a really stupid decision. All of my cards have a chip now and they are all chip and signature.
in my experience, It's rare that a cashier asks to see any kind of ID. They don't even check the signature on the card. The whole signing thing is pointless as far as protecting the cardholder from unauthorized use.

I agree, it's madness. Considering the speed Apple Pay was rolled out, it shouldn't be too difficult for the Banks to issue PINs too!

I loaned my card to my son-in-law to go get fast food to bring home to the family. He signed his own name and no one even looked at his signature.

The only added security that the PIN offers is in the case when a card is physically stolen. The key element is the chip. It prevents the sort of mega thefts of intercepted credit card account information that gives hackers the ability to then reproduce fake cards or sell lists of CC numbers and other account information. This has been the bulk of CC fraud cases in recent years, such as the "Target hack".

Just to add, the product i bought from the Michaels store was just photo frame (Less than $20)

They hold onto the signed receipts. They get checked every night and if there is one missing or not signed the cashier is written up.

Yep. I used my Mom's a few times to grocery shop for her when she was homebound, and I asked the cashier at the grocery store, who told me to sign MY own name. I guess if there was ever a question about the validity of the charge, when they look back they can see who signed the signature pad and go from there to investigate.

But to be honest, most places would probably never even notice if the name on the card matched the signature on the capture...I almost always use the self check out and pay with the CC, and with the electronic signature thing, the signature I sign never looks ANYTHING like my actual signature. even when you go to a cashier, many times they don't even require you to sign anymore (Walgreens, I mean YOU) if it's under like $50, and even when you do sign, the cashier never touches the card, so how would he even know if the name matched?

I've used DH's Cabela's card (he uses that for the points more than he uses his Citi card now) when I order things off the internet, but I've never taken his physical card to a store to use it that way. I use my own card then. I guess I didn't realize stores would allow someone other than the card holder to use it and sign for a purchase.

Our Meijer gas station asks for your zip code when using a credit card at their pumps and I do like that, and wish more places would have you do that.

When I worked at the restaurant I always compared signatures when someone paid with a credit card. Some people appreciated it, some didn't. I always appreciate it when a store cashier compares the signature. Some never even look at it.

Am I the only one who doesn't sign my name? I make a squiggly mark that is in no way representative of my signature. They never check it with the back of my card. My mom lives with us part of the year and it isn't at all unusual for me to use her card to pick up something for her when I'm out. Again, squiggly mark is all I do. Nobody ever says anything or seems to care. I had to pick up Oxycontin for her at the pharmacy this past winter. I used her credit card and I thought for sure that wouldn't go over well. They didn't even blink an eye.

I do the same. Never had an issue.

Where we live, no one ever checks signatures. Many stores don't even require signatures. Most stores have it set up where you swipe yourself and the cashier doesn't ask to see the card at all.
I use my credit card for everything. I almost never use cash.

I was recently in Portland Maine and everywhere we went they checked. My card is so worn there is no signature left. I had to show ID each and every time. It was a little annoying, since I was not used to this at all.

That's what bother's me they don't even ask for ID, so even no pin someone steals your card can just use it and no one would even know. I am glad I don't work retail anymore, and I really enjoyed my job. But I would hate to think that people using stolen cards. And the stores can get charge backs for stolen cards.
