Official 2016 Princess Half Marathon Thread

In my opinion, if you challenge yourself to train and you cross that finish line with pride- you are an experienced runner. Its not about the pace or how fast you finish, but all of the time you put into getting ready for that day. I have friends that second guess themselves and say "I'm not really a runner..." and I challenge them "but what about that time you got up early to get in 3 miles before work? or hit the gym on a Saturday morning even though you were tired? thats not nothing."

We're all making progress :)

I completely agree with you beachta1!
We're all so hard on ourselves, but it's pretty awesome that everyone here has committed to a 5k, 10k or half and are training towards their goal. Every time you lace up your shoes & make the decision to run (even when you don't feel like it) you are solidifying that you indeed are a runner.

Amen! I used to get really down on myself because I stopped being as fast as I was several years ago. Finally, I realized, "Hey, I'm still getting out there!" I always have a race goal that I work towards. And knowing that I have paid for it, keeps me lacing up my shoes and logging the miles-- even if I am slower! I love the camaraderie and encouragement we all give each other at races.

This Saturday I am "running" a local Harry Potter 5K with DS10 :yay: I saw a picture of the T shirt and medal and they are awesome!!

A HP race?! Color me jealous!

Do we need to submit a POT for the 10k? My friend and I are talking about doing a 5k in November and I can use that if I need to.

That's so crummy! It's been a long time since I've sprained anything, but I had really awful IT band issues following the PHM in 2014 and it was SO discouraging. I swam as a running replacement for a while, and then I alternated swimming and running until it felt better. It helped me heal quickly and since then, I've run a marathon and four half marathons with no problems. I love swimming almost as much as running, it was good cross training and it prompted me to sign up for a triathlon. :) Really hope you feel better soon!!

Swimming is a FANTASTIC idea! Thank you so much! I think that will be a great way to get over this. :)

I hope you get better soon!! Thankfully you have plenty of time to get ready and back into your training for the half. The fact that you're up to 5.5 miles already with this much time left means you're in good shape to build up miles from where you're at now!

I so appreciate the support! You're very right, and it helps me to move past this a bit to think of it like that. So thank you so much!

I've been interested in getting a Garmin 220 after reading the great reviews on here and other places. However, I've also thought that maybe I should just spend a little extra and get an apple watch instead. Do any of you have experience running with one? I'm confused on what the apple watch can do with being synced to the phone. The whole point of getting one of these things is so I don't have to run with my phone anymore.

What are you doing with your phone now?

I can't imagine running with something as expensive as the apple watch. Especially since it's only resistant to water. (when I run with my phone I have it in a ziptop bag (since I haven't bought the Lifeproof for my new phone yet) in my belt)

I use my Garmin Forerunner 10 and it's good for me!

I use Garmin 610 a few years old now love it. Had another Garmin lower model. But decided to upgrade so I could run the programs for my run group the 305 could not do all the steps. Like to use the virtual runner on speed interval runs. All the girls in the group use their phones but I prefer my Garmin with the computer displays.

I have an apple watch and I have run with it. I can place my phone in my running belt or pocket in my capris so that I don't have to watch it for pace and such. The watch will buzz when I'm changing intervals. The more the watch learns your pace and normal routes - you don't have to have your phone on you as it will be able to give you an idea on your distance with your pace.

Personally, I wouldn't run outside without my phone on me just in case something happens.

I run with my phone in my flipbelt and my earbuds snaked up my shirt. It does the job fine, I would just like to be free of extra stuff on me sometimes. It seems nice to just have a watch on my wrist (either apple watch or garmin) and then a little ipod shuffle that clips to my sports bra or shirt.

Ok thanks for the info! I think I would worry that my pace would have been slower or quicker than my phone thought and I wouldn't know exactly how far I'd run. The OCD in me wouldn't be able to handle it LOL
I would probably go phone-less only when running in a group. Then again when I first started running 7 years ago, I didn't take my phone with me.

I need inspiration to run today. My ribs feel like they are in a vice due to a muscle spasm in my back.
Ooooh I woke up with a similar thing this morning. I got a knot in my back. Luckily tomorrow is my day for running. That being said, I would have to say think about how great you'll feel after you run (hopefully) and think of being in WDW. I for one am excited to run a 1/2 which I've never done before and to spend time with one of my best friends who is going with me. I'm also going to eat the Kitchen Sink at B&C so I think about that a lot. What are you going to do in Disney? What are you looking forward to most? Think about that.

Yeah - I had a rough morning, too. I think it was a combination of a shortened run on Tuesday due to rain, giving blood yesterday, and the stupid heat we are having here. But, as my DH likes to say, there are no junk miles. Everybody has bad days when you just don't have it in you. But there's a great big beautiful tomorrow....

The plan is to enjoy the weekend without the 8 year old. The husbeast and I haven't been away from him in five years. We are planning to just eat our way through Epcot, which we didn't get to do last time because the boy was bored, and tired, and didn't like anything there...

We want to do the Kitchen Sink on our family trip in September but I can't get reservations! There are 5 of us so I am reluctant to try just waling up without one. I could get just my DD25 and I in during W&D but I don't think the 2 of us are up to that much ice cream, lol!
