ADRs? Yes We Made Stinking ADRs - A June '15 Dining Report - Updated 10/10: Sassagoula & Wrap-up

Following along!! Love that Casey called it boaties, that is what the cool kids should call it!!

Thanks for the "Boaties" revue. I'm looking forward to the cornbread. It is so much better than a standard dinner roll. I usually only see it at Trail's End or HDDR, though. We are going to eat there on our arrival day, too, and then we plan to catch YeHaa Bob's show. It is our first time staying at POR, our first time at a moderate resort, and I don't know if we'll be back again. So I can't miss this opportunity. :)

Were the collard greens served as part of an entree or were they ordered separately? I've never eaten collard greens but anything with bacon sounds appealing. ;)

What a fun surprise! Your dinner at Boatwright's looks delicious! I couldn't decide if your drink was going to be good or gross, glad to hear that it worked out well.

Nice review on Boatwrights! I had read good things about it, it's nice to have dinner at your "home" resort, less commute time! I'm glad you liked your drink, I wasn't too sure from the description! I guess I would have expected things to be on the spicier side as well being Cajun themed :confused3

Late for dinner but glad to be at the table - sounds like a great trip & fun read so far! I've been overwhelmed by the excel spreadsheets myself for this upcoming trip & thinking of moving over, or at least inching towards, the "I don't need any stinking ADRs" laissez faire group ...

Oh, excellent! My daughter wants to try POR for an upcoming trip and Boatwright's sounds like just the ticket!

Thank you Kari for that great review of Boatwrights. Definitely putting the collard greens on my order. You're making me feel better about our decision to stay at Riverside next trip since there are no discounted rooms available over at the Yacht/Beach for the week we will be traveling.

Boatright's looks good. I grew up in "cajun country" and love cajun food. I feel like I might be disappointed with Disney's cajun offerings though. We did have an ADR there for our upcoming trip, but when we switched from POR to AKL, I cancelled it. One day we'll get there.

I just laughed out loud at Casey's "single white female" staring. Been there!
You probably would be disappointed with Boatwrights. My brother went to school at LSU and I fully partook in the opportunity to visit him often and eat and drink my way through cajun country. Boatwrights doesn't compare to more authentic dishes I've had there, but good nonetheless. Good news for you is AKL has food that blows POR out of the water!!!!!

I don't even remember the last time I dined at Boatwright's, but I seem to recall that it was breakfast. Since they haven't served breakfast there for 5 or 6 years, it's been at least that long but I have a feeling it's been more like 10 years. So anyway, your review has reminded me that one of these times I need to have dinner there, followed by seeing Yehaa Bob at the River Roost Lounge. I've never seen him but have heard many good things about his show.

Can't wait for the ooey, gooey goodness! I'm feeling a bit sad that Liberty Tree will probably still be closed on my next trip, assuming I get back there for F & W this fall.
If you're in the area, Boatwrights is definitely worth a visit. And it looked like they served food in the lounge too. I've never seen YeeHa either and wish I'd remember he'd was there so we could have planned to stay a while longer. Casey was enthralled with him and i know her mama would have enjoyed too.

We stayed at POR a few years back and I'm sorry that we didn't try Boatwrights. I also love pimento cheese - all the ways you mention and then some. That fried cheese looks yummy, even without the pimentos.
Its definitely worth a visit if you're ever back at POR and of course ordering some of those non-pimento pimento cheese balls ; )

Love the Boatwrights review. :goodvibes We ate there I think in 2007 and I remember being disappointed. Your meal seems to be a big improvement. Not sure if it is worth the trip if not staying there though. :confused3
I wouldn't say its worth the trip, but if you're there worth looking into.

Ha! Look at that sweet SWF face! I know that look too! I have heard so many great things about Port Orleans! I am sure that we will stay there one day too! Boatwrights sounds like a nice, convenient option.
Her face was definitely sweet but after the 10 minute mark, sweet turned into creepy child. With this being our first time sleeping in beds next to each other she was definitely enthralled with mama being right there.

Boatwright's looked good! Glad your drink was a good gamble...you never know how that will turn out! Those greens looked amazing, I love hot sauce too, I would have put it on just about everything :thumbsup2
I have had the wake up in the night with a kid standing in front of you staring :scared1:
The drink was definitely a gamble that paid off. Though maybe I should have tried it with a little hot sauce :-)

Yeah, we're working on developing our own language. Boaties, Ep-A-Cot, and she's currently calling the Poly the Holly-Nesian. Too cute to correct.

Hey you're using the cool "Boaties" language too. Glad to see its catching on like wildfire ; )

So glad to hear you are doing Boaties, hope you enjoy it as much as we did. And great plan to catch Bob, which we could. We were the same as you staying moderate for the first time and not knowing when/if we'd be back. Really made us stop and enjoy it a little bit more than we may have otherwise.

The collards were served with a couple of the entrees, but we ordered them as a side. i think they were like $4 or so but definitely worth it, especially if you've never had them. But be sure to ask for some tobacco, it really adds some nice heat.

What a fun surprise! Your dinner at Boatwright's looks delicious! I couldn't decide if your drink was going to be good or gross, glad to hear that it worked out well.
Thankfully the drink turned out to be good, though i really wasn't sure. Not even sure why i ordered it, but thankfully the ordering God's were in my favor that day.

Love your reports!
:o Ah shucks, thanks...

Glad you could join us, lucky we still have a few empty seats ; ) I'll never discourage anyone's spreadsheets, especially after I ventured to the planning side, but I think a bit of flexibility adds to the spontaneity of life.

Oh, excellent! My daughter wants to try POR for an upcoming trip and Boatwright's sounds like just the ticket!
Sounds like your daughter is a very smart girl ; )

Thank you Kari for that great review of Boatwrights. Definitely putting the collard greens on my order. You're making me feel better about our decision to stay at Riverside next trip since there are no discounted rooms available over at the Yacht/Beach for the week we will be traveling.
I think you'll like POR. It and POFQ definitely aren't the Yacht/Beach club but the location really is close to just about everything and POR especially had a unique feel to it. I actually preferred the look of it to POFQ, reminded me more of sprawling old southern plantations. Just adjust your expectations at the get go and you'll love it! And if not just soak your sorrows in some collards ; )

Oh YAY!! I'm so happy you liked the collards! Growing up in the deep South, I have a love for all things collards, all things bacon, and all things Tabasco (or Crystal at times, too). Love love them!

And Gin? Oh boy gin. It's my most favorite adult beverage but drinking it makes me either want to fight or get naked ... and the line is a fine one. My poor husband.

Speaking of ... I know a man who owns a restaurant that serves kickarse jalapeno pimento cheese as an appetizer ;)

Joining in! We love food and our next trip will be the first time to have a trip filled with ADRs! :drinking1

Hi Kari :wave2: I commented on your Feb. dining report pretty early into it and then.......I kinda disappeared  But, I just went through and read the whole thing, I'm here now, and I'm going to be a good Dis'er (although sometimes it's good to be bad ;) )and stay with it b/c I really really enjoyed your previous one ::yes:: :flower3:

We did Boatwrights in Feb. of last year while staying at POFQ. Last minute decision and we were pleasantly surprised. Can't remember what anyone else had, I had steak-maybe a filet? but it was delicious! Would definitely return there if we're ever staying at FQ again but I don't think we'd make a special trip over otherwise. We were just a walk-up and it was a few nights before Presidents Day. Thinking it's probably a place you can get a walk up most times of year, with some fairly obvious exceptions.

PS really love and appreciate your sense of humor and sarcasm (and I sincerely mean that)!!

Abita Beer is THE way to go!! I live in Southeast Louisiana so Abita is the go to beer!! During the spring they come out with Strawberry Harvest Lager. That and some crawfish....I can't say anymore!

Love the review on "Boaties". The chicken and waffles looked yum. We stayed at Riverside in 2013, but didn't get to dine there. Always next time!

I would definitely get them again, just adjust my expectations accordingly.

Funny how that happens. I wonder if all this obsessing about menus and food before the trip is making our expectations higher lol...but you know, you need to know what to expect!!

Voodoo Chicken which is Crispy Battered Chicken Breast and Fluffy Golden Waffles

That sounds really good!!

bacon and maple gravy was delicious.

Odd...but I think I want to try it!

I sure hope you mean Tabasco lol...I'm sure you're kidding because you did it a few times...must be a Casey'ism..right? I must have missed that in another report lol

Following along. We've stayed at POR twice now and we still have never eaten at Boatwright's. I'll be hitting it up for sure next time we stay there.

With no clever ideas for a big surprise reveal, I saw a good opportunity 3 days before the trip when Jason said he wanted a ribeye for fathers day(I already had Yachtsman Steakhouse ADR)
I think this is very clever...I was telling my husband about it and he asked why I've never taken him to disney when he says he wants a ribeye! You sure do set the bar high for the rest of us mere mortals!

She came up with the plan to tell him we were taking him to Chuck E Cheese, which of course is every father’s dream.
You mean it is not every father's dream to hang out at Chuck E Cheese, but I love Casey's plan and that she was in on it!

Boaties as Casey said the cool people call it ; )
She is a treadsetter with all her little names for things, so cute.

mood for something that would get my Disney party started a little faster
Party on!

she said it tasted like soup ; ) #GottaWorkOnHerInnerCritic
No wiser words were ever said. She is very straight forward in her descriptions of food!

ll creepy single white female and staring me down for at least 20 minutes, she finally dozed off and got in a good nights sleep for the next day.
Love this! And loving your report so far...

Here you leave today and enter the world of yesterday, tomorrow, and FOOD!!!!!!

Welcome one and all to my June 2015 dining report. For those that have followed my other reports, I'm shocked I haven't offended you away yet so double welcome to you. For those that may be new to me and my love for all things disney, food, alcohol, and sarcasm you have now been warned ; )

Before I get into the title, a bit about me and my foodie family.

That's me, Kari, in the middle, aren't I cute and have a great grasp of words for a 4 year old ; ) Sadly, I'm the infinitely less cute one on the right. I've been going to Disney World since I was a kid and have no earthly idea how many times I've actually been. Besides Disney, my other passion in life is food and wine, so a dining report is the logical place for me to share my obsessions and endless opinions with all of you.

Next up is my hubby Jason, who by some amazing cosmic event loves not only me, but also Disney, food, and wine. Jason is a little bit country (he's from West Virginia), a little bit rock 'n roll (he's a bada$$ chef), and a lot a bit crazy - as is evidenced by the above photo where he was clearly not too proud to finish off his daughter's ice cream cone.

Speaking of daughter, besides food the real star of our show is my 4-year old Casey.

She is a fun, energetic, sweet, and silly little girl who is the center of our universe. I am firmly committed to instilling my love of disney into her (her "first" trip was in utero) and she's clearly got the bug. Thankfully like her parents, Casey is also little foodie which makes eating in the world fun for all.

Now a little bit about the title. If you've followed either of my previous reports (insert shameless plug to check them out in my signature), you know by now that I'm not a planner. With very few exceptions, we don't make ADR's ahead of time and instead wait until the day before or day of and see where our cravings and open reservations take us. This works well for our laissez faire style, especially since we typically visit during "value" seasons (though of course value and disney is the biggest oxymoron ever).

But this trip was different, we were going during the thick of the summer crowds and heat and not knowing what to expect I made ADR's. Not the day of, or even the day before, like the day I decided to go on the trip. Now granted that was only about a month or so out, but I felt the need to confess my ADR sins ; ) I'm still not proud, and even worse and in a bit of foreshadowing, it wasn't even that bad. Now that doesn't mean I'll convert to the 180-day spreadsheet crowd, but a mix of planned and unplanned events may not be so bad.

A few details to wet your proverbial appetites:
Dates: 18-22 June (This was a surprise for my hubby for fathers day weekend, more to come on that in the first post)
Resort: Port Orleans French Quarter (new to us)
Restaurants: Yachtsman Steakhouse, Raglan Road, Boatwrights (all of these were new to us) and other several perennial favorites

Bon Appetit!

You've come over to the dark side of ADR making!! I can't wait to read - I always love your reports. We are going in September and no ADR's because we are doing QS, but I'm excited to try new places.
