Renting vs Transfering Points

I'm currently in ROFR For a Purchase at BLT. I do have a question about the difference between Renting and Transfering Points. What is the difference? If I want to book a room that is 200 points for a week and I only have 190 in my account, can I just rent 10 additional points? Or do I have to go through the transfer process?

With a Point Transfer, the points are deducted from the sending members account and deposited in to the receiving members account. The receiving member has full control over those points once they are transferred.

When you "rent" points, you pay a member to make a reservation in your name. The other member has full control over the reservation until you physically check-in at the resort. The member that made the reservation is they only one that can make changes to the reservation, add/remove a dining plan, arrange DME, etc.

DVC will sell you One-Time-Use Vacation Points if you need more to place a reservation. You can purchase up to 24 OTU Points per use year for a cost of $15/point.

Excellent thanks for the tips, the extra 24 OTU points may definetely come in handy!

If you need a small number of points, yes.

Since point transfers are limited to one per use year (either in or out), many members won't want to use that one transfer for a small number of points.

Additionally, when you make the reservation, you can purchase up to an additional 24 points through MS at $15 per point. This way you don't have to rent through another member and deal with not having "full control". GOOD LUCK and enjoy DVC!:flower1:

To add to what Michael has posted, you can transfer points only once per Use Year, either into or out of your account. It can be difficult to find someone willing to use their one transfer to transfer only 10 points. Also, the One-Time-Use points can only be purchased when making a reservation 7 months or less from check-in because those points have no home resort priority.

If I am short a few points when making a reservation in the home resort booking window I usually borrow points from my next Use Year. When short of points when booking 7 months or less from check-in, I might borrow points from my next UY or I might opt to purchase OTU points if I'm saving my home resort points for another reservation that I want to book 11 months out.

Keep in mind OTU points can only be purchased at 7 months not 11, so if your wanting that BLT standard, BWV Standard, or AKV Value, you can forget about OTU points.

Yup I understand. BLT will hopefully be our home resort so I will borrow when I want to stay there and perhaps use the OTU points to book other resorts like Aulani.
