Anyone visited Tokyo? Comparisons with DLP?

Hi everyone!
I'm less than 6 weeks away from a big trip to Japan. We'll be visiting lots of places over the course of two weeks, including two days at Tokyo Disney Resort. We'll have just one day at Tokyo Disneyland and one day at Disney Sea. We're staying at the Sheraton which is a partner hotel more or less onsite.

I've been getting great advice over on the Tokyo forum, but with DLP as my "home park" that I'm extremely familiar with, I wondered whether anyone else on this Paris forum had visited Tokyo. I'd be really interested in a comparison between DLP and TDR, which rides are different etc., so that I can prioritise the things I can't do in Paris. Most comparisons online are (understandably) between the US resorts and TDR.

Thanks!

DLP is my Home park, and I've visited Tokyo 2 times. And I stayed at the Sheraton too. So looks like I'm the right person to dispense the advice!

From your signature, it looks like you haven't visited the US parks recently. Of the 'Disneylands', Paris is arguably the most different of all of them. So what that means is - pretty much everything in Tokyo Disneyland will be unique to you. That doesn't help you much in paring down the options, so let me see if I can be a bit more useful!

  • If you're really looking for something to skip, give Big Thunder Mountain a miss. It's poor in comparison with DLP's edition.
  • You should definitely skip Buzz Lightyear, which is extremely similar to the Paris version.
  • Star Tours is very similar to the US version, which you won't have seen based on the visit dates in your signature. But I'm not sure Japan is the best place to see it anyway.
  • I did Pirates of the Caribbean in Tokyo, which was extremely good, but if you start getting pressed for time this should drop off the list pretty early too. Same goes for It's A Small World - there are subtle differences, but not enough to justify time taken away from other attractions.
  • One thing you shouldn't skip despite the name is Haunted Mansion. It has a few surprises... I won't spoil the details! It is usually the last attraction to run out of FastPass.
  • Splash Mountain has a Single Rider line that is usually faster than the FastPass line.

With regard to DisneySea, it's all unique, with one exception: "Raging Spirits" is actually identical to Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril. You can safely skip that. Tower of Terror is substantially different. The standard advice is to skip Toy Story Mania, but you haven't done the US parks, so maybe you should be the exception and do that - but be prepared for extremely long queues, or your FastPass being tied up for 2 hours.

I'm guessing you've read this advice already, but your priorities should be Pooh's Hunny Hunt and Monster's Inc Hide & Go Seek in Disneyland. DisneySea's priority should be Journey To The Centre Of The Earth, and also Sindbad's Storybook Voyage (but you don't need to rush so much for Sindbad).

Yes, the parks are MUCH busier than Disneyland Paris, but they are also much larger, so ultimately it generally feels like DLP on a busy weekend. You can help yourself by investing in two entrance tickets per person. This gives you a much better shot at the FastPasses, and if you only have one day per park, you're going to need it! Plus, tickets are a fraction of the price of other resorts. It's really not that big an expenditure. Skip a dinner somewhere if it helps you justify it. Remember that you need to exit the park and re-enter on the second ticket(s) to be able to use them to collect FastPasses.

With regards the Sheraton, there is a stupid shuttle bus that drives you all of 150 metres from the 'Bay' monorail stop to the Sheraton entrance. You can easily walk this by ... well, walking in the obvious direction. I'm just mentioning it in case you see the bus waiting and assume it's a long way! The monorail is paid, unlike WDW, but a worthwhile investment (you can buy a multi-day pass).

Check your dates don't overlap with exclamation marks on this calendar: http://tdrnavi.jp/forecast/disneyland?lang=en - if they do, try and plan differently as these represent capacity limits (i.e. you might not even be let in!). As a rule, Disneyland is much more crowded. Apart from that, don't worry too much about the wait times - you'll have two tickets each, remember, so once the first rush of guests is "locked out" of fastpass for 2 hours due to having collected Hunny Hunt tickets, you can go around picking up tickets on a half hourly basis for all the other attractions with your second ticket.

Another thing... in Paris you may be used to walking into attractions with FastPass tickets 30 minutes late... that doesn't fly in Tokyo. If you are even as little as 5 minutes late, you will very politely told to sling your hook - end of story. So make sure you're on time!

All my (UK) credit cards were accepted at all stalls and locations throughout both parks, so you shouldn't need to worry too much about carrying cash. The popcorn is unique.

You'll have a fantastic time :-)

Wow, thanks so much cdd89, you're right that you're the right person to dispense advice! This is exactly what I was looking for. You're right that I haven't visited the US parks since i was a teenager, so comparisons with those are a bit lost on me.

We're visiting on 16 and 17 September, green dates on the crowd calendar. Unfortunately Journey to the Centre of the Earth is closed for maintenance during our entire Japan visit - this was a major disappointment when I first found out but I'm just about over it! I'm slightly worried this will mean other attractions are busier than usual without Journey to absorb crowds.

Your advice is really valuable, e.g. i might have been tempted to skip Haunted Mansion but I'll make sure we do it now. And I'm a big fan of utilising Single Rider, so I'll do that on Splash Mountain for sure!

Genius idea to get two tickets...I might see how we get on for the first couple of hours once we're in the park (we've already bought tickets online), and if it feels like we aren't going to get everything done that we want, we could take the call to pop out and buy more tickets mid morning. I've got a feeling my cousin, who will be with me and who is not a disney nut like myself, will see this as a step too far unless proved wrong! Mind you, with her being a bigger harry potter nut than me she's insisting on paying almost double for fast track when we visit Universal Osaka to maximise Harry Potter time....so I might have a case with TDR double ticketing ;)

Thanks again, I'll be writing all of this down and I'm sure it will help us make the most of our time at TDR.

Following, as I'm in the same boat. Paris is home park, planning a Tokyo trip for September next year.

If your Tokyo trip is planned for next year hopefully i'll be able to help :) i'll be doing a trip report when I get back complete with Paris comparisons!

Hello, much like cdd89 my home resort is Paris but I've visited TDL.

All I can say is it is AMAZING! I read most of the post above but here are a couple which spring to mind.

  • DisneySea is the most amazing park in the world, I'd personally spend more time here.
  • The CM's are so sweet and kind and 90% of the time are easy to communicate with but there were a couple of times I had to use copious amounts of hand gestures to ask a question. I got the answer in the end.
  • The parks are busy! Even on green days FP will run out for Toy Story and Pooh's honey hunt.
  • Most memorable rides (excluding journey to the centre of the earth) Pooh's honey hunt TDL, Indiana Jones TDS, Sinbad's Storybook Voyage TDS, Tower of Terror TDS, Western River Railroad TDL, Monsters Inc Hide and go seak TDL.
  • Slow down, take you're time, take lots of photos.
You're going to love it! Ask away if you have any other questions. :)

Ah also its important to know that you're "locked in" to one park a day until day 3 (if you buy a multi day passport).

You have to specify which park you are going to visit for the first 2 days.

Also I think i've read your trip reports too... and you have a Duffy???

Buy all the clothes for him! They only sell them in DisneySea and they are exclusive to this theme park! You can't buy them anywhere else.

If Journey To The Center Of The Earth is closed, then you shouldn’t really need two tickets at DisneySea. Indiana Jones (the other huge-wait-time attraction there) has a single rider queue.

Interesting thing – in Tokyo, they ask the person you’ll be put next to for permission when you go Single Rider! I had one person say “no” – I was mortally offended…

I just thought I’d add that Space Mountain will be very memorable for you given that you haven’t done Disneyland California. It’s very different from WDW, and even more different from DLP. I forgot to mention that in my first post. Make that a priority (you’ll need fastpass!).

Unlike Disneyland Paris, where the popcorn stands are uninspired, it’s a huge thing in Tokyo. You’ll see all sorts of bizarre flavours and they’re even marked on the map. (Milk Tea was my favourite!).

Snow White’s Adventures and Pinnochio’s Daring Journey can be skipped – they are very similar to the Disneyland Paris versions.

Take some time (perhaps in the busiest part of the day, between fastpasses) to look at Main Street USA (known as ‘World Bazaar’ in Tokyo) and spot the differences (and more fun, similarities!). Apart from the obvious difference, I thought the REAL bank, and the penny arcade were great fun.

Other logistical things: I’m guessing you’ve heard about the lottery for Big Band Beat, the Disneyland Fireworks, and One Man’s Dream. If not, that’s the way to get seats for those. You can in theory queue for the first performance, but I think it’s not a good use of your time (just enter the lottery and take your chances!). And secondly... they block entry to the queues early in Tokyo, such that there is a very short queue after park close. You can't do what you may be used to doing in DLP, i.e. jumping in line for Crush's Coaster at 20:59!

I’d be interested to see a trip report too. I didn’t really look around the park comparing it to Paris... I think it would be unique!

On an unrelated note… are you sure you are able to buy Express Passes for Harry Potter in Universal Osaka? I went when it had just opened and they weren’t even letting people in the area without a lottery ticket (which I didn’t win). Express Passes weren’t valid for it. And more importantly, you could only buy the pass at the entrance and they were sold out by my arrival. Just a word of warning!

Anyone done Disney and Universal in Japan in one trip? If so how did you travel between the two? Train - and if so return to where you started afterwards or maybe home -> tokyo -> Osaka -> home?

Also if travelling by train, what do you do about luggage? I've read their trains do not really have space for larger luggage so what do you do?

I'm watching your trip closely as we won't be going this year (off to Malaysia to finish what I started) or next - I hope you have a wonderful time and come back and tell us all about it :goodvibes

Obviously I'll be able to give a fuller answer when I return in September, but I've been researching the same things and think I know the answers!
1) we're visiting Universal Osaka just before Disney (staying at Universal resort). We plan to take the train in the evening from Osaka to central Tokyo (takes about 3.5 hours). We've booked to stay in a wee pod hotel in Tokyo that night - this is something we just wanted to try out! Then we're getting the quick local train to TDR the next morning to check in to the Sheraton and enjoy 2 days at Disney
This only accounts for 3 days of our 2 week trip though - are you thinking of taking in other locations in Japan whilst there?
2) there seems to be a great service called Takkyubin whereby you send your suitcases either from one hotel to another or from a seven eleven to your hotel, so you don't need to take them on public transport. It's only about £10 per bag per time. Because we're visiting a lot of locations, we're planning to do this 3 times on our trip, taking little overnight bags with us in case we beat our cases to the next destination. I'll be able to report back on how this works out!!

I sure will Carrie!

Thanks so much BagoLaughs! I cannot WAIT to see DisneySea. Unfortunately one day is our max...partly because of the "no park hopping on a 2 day visit" rule :( I've already ordered my tickets online and am definitely doing day 1 Disneyland day 2 DisneySea. With so much to see in Japan and only 2 weeks in total to visit, we really can't spend more than 2 days at TDR.
No i don't have a Duffy....yet. Haha! I have read that the American Waterfront area in DisneySea is total Duffyville?! i might be tempted...

Thanks again, more tips for the list. I love Space Mountain in DLP so i'll need to make sure i ride it in TDR and notice the differences.

Eek, i am worried now about Harry Potter, I didn't know there was a lottery system. We are staying in an official Universal Resort Hotel in Osaka so we'll be at the gate at the crack of dawn, and will have bought park tickets from the hotel in advance and express passes too if we can.

While in the Osaka area, make sure you spend at least a few days in Kyoto. It's the real cultural center of Japan (capital city through history, until 1869). There are more world heritage sites, shrines, and temples than you could possibly see in 2 weeks! Plus the Gion district, where you can still see real Geisha and Maiko walking the streets. One of my favorite cities in the world.

Brilliant, that could work well!

Please make sure you take lots photos (especially of the Back to the future ride!!!!!) and give us a really detailed trip report! I'm sure I'm not the only one who's been thinking about a Japan trip so your trip report will be fascinating!!

Oh and if you're passing the new Park Front hotel at Universal could you pop in and let us know what its like? The "time travelling" elevator sounds intriguing!

Don't worry I've booked 3 nights in kyoto! I'm even more excited about this than TDR as it will be unlike anywhere I've ever been. We are staying 4 nights in Tokyo, 3 in kyoto, 1 in hiroshima, 2 in osaka and 2 at TDR

Just got back from Tokyo - we spent three days in the parks but didn't really get many rides done - the 47ºC heat just wasn't working well with us! it was our first three days so we hadn't had a chance to get used to the change in weather from NE England lol

Parks were packed, but everything runs a lot smoother than in Paris, the bag checks and getting through the gates were a lot quicker, even at opening.

If you've not been on Toy Story Mania before, definitely go do that (we didn't but we've been on it in California and Florida) but make sure you run for it at rope drop because fast passes were gone by around 8:30 and the standby queue was three hours long.

If you get the chance while you're in Japan you need to visit Okunoshima, its rabbit island, it was the cutest experience I had the entire trip ^_^

I don't know if you're climbing Mt Fuji, but if you are make sure you take head torches as its getting dark around 6pm, we had torches but going down in the dark was still a terrifying nightmare - we even picked up a torchless couple on the way.

If you're into Duffy/Shellie May/Gelatoni pick one up on the way into DisneySea, there are photospots around the park which are basically seats to sit your bear on and take photos with a nice bit of the park in the background. Lovely little memory photos :)

Enjoy your trip!

Sounds wonderful :goodvibes it's on my bucket list so I'll be looking forward to reading about it.
