Aloha, Happy Birthday and Merry Christmas

Great that things are starting to come together and we can plan our meets and get togethers!

Another lovely update, I love all the pictures and the decorations are beautiful.

Thank you. The decorations are amazing.

D&B wallet is a great find and the sweatshirt is so darn cute.

I love both of them and as D&B goes, that wallet was a steal

your meal looked wonderful, and sorry you had cancel dinner plans for Napa Rose, but I totally understand.

The meal was great.

Looks like your plans are coming together for the SEptember trip.

They sure are.

That cabin is really cute. I have a goal of making it to DL sometime during one of the holidays. Heck I want to get back to WDW during one of the holidays as well!

I loved the cabin. Disneyland during the holiday season is great. If you get the chance to go, grab it.

What a nice dinner with friends. I am so hungry for a steak right now and just want to jump in the screen.

At the moment both steak and dinner with friends sounds really appealing.

Exciting about your trip plans!!! Why are they doing Paint the Night during the party if they're doing it every other night as well?

I am not sure. This seems a little strange.

I was hoping for a special Halloween parade.

Disneyland has never had a proper Halloween parade. They called it a Costume Calvacade and as far as I understand it, it consisted of a couple of floats and some characters in costumes.

Or am I misunderstanding?

No, you are understanding correctly.

Great that things are starting to come together and we can plan our meets and get togethers!

I will send Sue and email tomorrow to see if she is back and then the planning can commence.

Day 22

When we got up that morning, it looked like the end of the world had arrived. It very rarely rains in Southern California. The region has been in a state of drought for the last 3 years with next to no rain during this period. However, looking at the colour of the sky that morning, it looked like that some heavy rain was imminent. This kind of changed my plans. I had planned to be in the parks for rope drop as this was my last day at Disneyland. However, as a substantial number of visitors to Disneyland are local, the parks are a lot more affected by the weather than Walt Disney World is. If it is raining, the locals won’t come and those already in the parks will leave. So I figured it may be in my interest to just wait a bit. As Graham had no specific plans for the day either, we decided to go and get some breakfast. We decided to head down to IHOP and then I would just push on to the parks.

I started to wonder if this was such a good idea as there were a lot of people waiting outside when we got there. By then it had started to drizzle. Fortunately things looked a lot worse than they were. We checked in and were told that there would be a wait of 10 to 15 minutes, which was fine by us. In the end it was just short of 10 minutes. We both had coffee. Graham had the Breakfast Sampler, which consisted of eggs, bacon, pork sausage links, ham, buttermilk pancakes and hash browns. I went with the Sirloin Tips with eggs and hash browns, but asked if I could substitute some of the seasonal pancakes for the buttermilk pancakes that normally come with this. This was not a problem for a small upcharge. I had the Caramel Bon Bon Pancakes, which consisted of two buttermilk pancakes filled with Dulce de Leche cream and topped with caramel sauce and whipped topping. This was absolutely delicious and set me up nicely for the day. Once we had finished our breakfast, we arranged a meeting time and then I headed for the parks.

By the time I got to the entrance, it was belting it down. I decided to head into California Adventure first to see if I could find out if Oswald would be due out that day. His normal meeting spot is rather exposed. I went to the Chamber of Commerce to check as I really wanted to see Oswald one last time. The cast member I spoke to did think that he would meet people, but they would relocate him. He went to try and find out for me, but in the end did not have any joy with this. I had waited about 20 minutes and he asked me what I was planning to do next. I told him I was crossing over into Disneyland. He told me that this was fine and asked me what ride I was planning to do next. This caught me somewhat by surprise. I told him Big Thunder Mountain and he filled out an instant Fastpass for this. With hindsight, I should have chosen Haunted Mansion Holiday as this was the ride with the longest waiting time that day.

Before I crossed over, I decided to head up Buena Vista Street to check out the board with the waiting times. As I had thought, Radiator Springs Racers was closed at the time and the waiting times for Soarin and Toy Story Midway Mania were relatively long. So I went back to the original plan to head over to Disneyland. On the way back down, I noticed the community bell ringers under a roof and I decided to watch them for a bit. They were rather good and I kind of regretted that I did not check them out earlier in the trip.
When I got to Disneyland, the entrance plaza was surprisingly empty even though for now it had stopped raining. I took this opportunity to take some photos of the flowerbeds just outside the railway station. When I walked through the entrance tunnel into Town Square, I noticed that some extra decorations had appeared. The Candlelight Processional would take place the following weekend and they had started to decorate for this. This filled me with a certain amount of joy. One of the threads I follow does an annual photo countdown to the holiday season. I was pretty confident that I would have photos for all expected themes apart from the Candlelight Processional. So with them being organized, this took care of that problem.

Pretty much as soon as I got through the entrance tunnel, a slightly chilly looking and very bored Photopass photographer pounced on me. She asked if she could take some photos of me. I was not about to decline. As she noticed that I was interested in the decorations for the Candlelight Processional, she took some photos in front of them. She then asked me to go up the stairs to the train station and we did a bunch of different photos there. She then walked with me to the Christmas tree on Town Square and we took some more photos there. I have never had a private Photopass photographer in one of the parks before. She did actually apologize for taking up so much of my time, but I did not mind at all and thanked her for her time.

By then it had started to drizzle again. I headed over towards Tomorrowland. I spotted that there was not much of a line at Matterhorn so I headed in this direction first and managed to ride this with a minimal wait. Suddenly I understood where all the mystery bruises earlier in the week had come from. Since the ride was refurbished in 2013, it has become really bumpy. It just so happens that the areas where I had developed bruises were areas where I was thrown against the ride vehicle. Despite the bumpy ride, I still enjoyed this. I know that this ride had another extended refurbishment recently. I am not sure if they smoothed it out a bit while they were at it, but in any case I will have to do this again in September to experience the special effects.

I figured that with the weather being still on the wet side, I may be in with a chance that I may see the fairies without too much of a wait. Tinkerbell is always in residence, but the other fairies rotate so I was hoping that a different fairy would be there. I asked the cast member near the entrance and he told me that Fawn was visiting that day. I have not met her before so this sounded good to me. The line did not actually look that long, but it moved quite slowly. Still, I was quite happy to people watch. Some of the girls that were ahead of me where so excited. I also used the waiting time to take some more photos. About 20 minutes later it was my turn. This time both fairies where in the same spot and they were on fine form. I don’t think I ever laughed so much. They were also rather taken with my ears.

I decided to head over to Tomorrowland next. My original plan had been to see if I could cross off another bucket list item and see if I could ride up front on the monorail. However, the monorail was down. I am not sure if this was linked with the weather, but in Florida the monorail still runs in heavier rain than what we were experiencing that day. Instead I spotted that the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage only had a 10 minute wait. This was too good to pass up. I like the ride, but not enough to brave the long lines that it normally attracts. In the end the waiting time was around 15 minutes, but that was still rather sweet. This is another ride that had a makeover, but I think this was largely cosmetic as I could not detect any changes.

I moved on to Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters and that had a posted wait time of 10 minutes. So I got in line. This wait time was spot on. I did not do too well with this, but I still enjoyed it. There was nothing else that I wanted to do in Tomorrowland so I decided to head over to New Orleans Square to see if I could do Haunted Mansion Holiday. The waiting time for this was 60 minutes so I gave this a pass especially as the line to get a Fastpass was also impressive. That is the point where I really wished that I had thought of this when I was asked which ride I was planning to do next. Instead I headed over to Big Thunder Mountain to use my Fastpass. I would not really have needed one, but it was nice that my only waiting time was pretty much how long it took me to walk from the entrance to the loading dock. As soon as I got on the ride, the heavens opened in quite spectacular fashion and I did my best drowned rat impression.

I had every intention to do It’s A Small World Holiday one last time, but as I was so wet that you could have wrung me out, I did not think that was such a good idea. That ride is quite long and it is quite cold. So instead I cut through Fantasyland and through the castle. When I got there, half of humanity seemed to be there as well. I had conveniently forgotten about the afternoon parade. So I decided to just stay put. I saw something really cute. I had heard about this previously, but I had never actually seen this. We got the Rainy Day Parade that day, which consists of the characters on the Main Street Vehicles. I was delighted to have experienced, but I did feel for the people who had paid for the Holidays at Disneyland tour that day and were looking forward to the parade with front row seating. Even some of the people who were in my area were very angry. I tried to explain to a gentleman next to me who was very vocal that this was a safety issue, but he was not impressed.

After the success I had with going to visit the princesses straight after the parade earlier in the week, I decided to check if this would work again. I was not quite so lucky, but I was more than happy to be out of the rain as the waiting area is covered. I still only waited about 15 minutes, which is a result for the princesses. The ones that were in residence that day were same as earlier in the week: Ariel, Cinderella and Snow White. Again, I did not mind this and was delighted to see Ariel again. I got some more nice photos.

By the time I was finished with the princesses, I had about 30 minutes until I was due to meet Graham in the lobby of the Grand Californian. I decided to cut through California Adventure in the hope that Oswald may have turned up after all. I was not lucky on this account, but I got lucky with something else. When I walked past Soarin over California, I spotted that the standby line was only 30 minutes long. This was too good to resist. I headed for the single rider line. For some reason they funnelled me through the Fastpass line, which was pretty busy and only when I got to the podium at the bottom of the ramp was I then asked to step over to the single rider line. So in the end using the single rider line saved me only about 10 minutes. However, it was well worth it as I got to ride in row one. This was a lovely finish to my time in the parks.

I got to our meeting point a little later than planned, but Graham was quite happy to sit. Santa was visiting the Grand Californian when I got there and had a Photopass photographer with him. Unfortunately his line was closed, but I was advised that he would be back 90 minutes later. I was not sure if we would still around then, but I decided to play this by ear. After our dinner plans had come apart and I cancelled our reservation the previous evening, we decided to visit a couple of our favourite haunts. For some reason we had not made it to either this trip. As we quite liked making a meal out of the Happy Hour menus at Aulani, we decided to make our own Happy Hour. We started out at the Hearthstone Lounge. Although they are usually doing a fair amount of trade, I have never seen this completely full. However, that evening it was packed to the rafters. We were just about to give up when a cast member saw us and came over. He directed us to a separate area near the back exit where there was a table with two armchairs. I felt like a VIP. It was nice and quiet as we were well away from the main room. We also got extremely attentive service. We ordered some drinks before we had a look at the menu. Graham had a Samuel Adams and I had an Agave Nectar Margarita. Graham decided to go for the Artisan Cheese Selection with toast points and candied pecans, which he really enjoyed. I went with my old go to dish, the "Robusto" Flatbread, which is topped with Chorizo de Bilbao, roasted fingerling potatoes, Burrata cheese and Romesco sauce. I love this dish and it was a sign that I made the right decision to cancel our reservation at Napa Rose when I could not finish it and Graham had to help me. We did linger a while and ordered a second round of drinks. Graham had another beer and I had a Mojito.

Once we had finished our drinks, Santa was due to come out again. I left Graham at the table and headed out to the lobby. I was the third person in line. Once I had my photos with Santa, I headed back and we paid. We headed out to Downtown Disney. I had a quick look inside Vault 28. I was also pondering getting some Peppermint Bark Squares from the Ghirardelli kiosk that was part of the little Christmas market near the ice rink. They only had huge bags so I decided to pass. We then pushed on to the Disneyland Hotel and specifically to Trader Sam’s Tiki Bar. Graham was still a bit hungry so we ordered a Pu Pu Platter, which consisted of sweet and spicy Asian wings, glazed Portuguese sausage bites, panko-crusted Chinese long beans, tropical slaw, and Sriracha aioli. I mainly picked at this, but really liked the beans. To wash this down, Graham had another beer and I had Rosita’s Margarita.

There was one thing I had conveniently forgotten: most of the seating is outside. Given the weather that day, it was not the cleverest choice for a bite to eat and a drink. Indeed, it suddenly started to rain when we were about half-way through the food. Graham went to check if there was any room inside, but there was not. Fortunately there was an area with a roof near the entrance so we grabbed our plate and our drinks and sheltered there. There was also a handy barrel where we could put down our stuff. Our server came out around this time and looked concerned when she could not see us at the table. We attracted her attention to let her know that we were still there and had just sought shelter from the rain. Fortunately the shower blew over very quickly. As soon as it stopped raining, servers appeared from everywhere to wipe down tables and chairs. We sat down again and finished our drinks. We did not linger in case it decided to rain again and asked for the bill, which arrived very swiftly. We paid and headed out.
On the way back through Downtown Disney, Graham pointed out a backdrop with Olaf. I had not noticed this before, but I really feel that they should have had a Photopass photographer with this. We just had to make do with just taking our own photos. We then made our way back to the hotel. There were still a couple of things to take care of first though. First there was the matter of dessert. When we walked to Disneyland on the evening we arrived back from Aulani, I spotted a Cold Stone Creamery right across from the entrance of Disneyland. The funny thing is, even though this is a US company, we have never had an ice cream from them in the USA. We do however always make a point to visit a couple of times when we are in Dubai. So we decided to put this right. Fortunately I always have room for ice cream. I went with scoop of cake batter and Graham had strawberry. This was every bit as good as in Dubai.

I also wanted to make another stop. I had mentioned to Graham the previous day that the gift shop in the hotel where I got the cash had an Olaf Beanie Buddy. He was surprised that I did not get him and in all honesty, so was I. So I decided to check how much he was. I can’t remember the exact price, but it seemed quite fair so Olaf followed us home. Once we got back to the hotel, I left Graham by the computers so that he could check his emails and I quickly went back to the room to pick up the folder with our paperwork. Once I got back, I did our online check in and printed the boarding cards. With this out of the way, we went back to the room to pack. This did not take very long. We switched on the TV for a bit and just relaxed. At around 21:30 we decided to get ready for bed as we had an early start. Unfortunately our fabulous holiday was effectively over.

So sad for the end of your trip that it was a rainy day, but it sounds like you made great use of the day. I like doing a little bar hopping for appetizers and stuff as a dinner. Fran on the other hand is not so keen on that idea. I love your sweatshirt! Nice job on the private photopass photographer!

This actually worked out great. The parks were emptier and I finally could wear some of my headband ears without having to worry about burning my scalp.

I like doing a little bar hopping for appetizers and stuff as a dinner.

We enjoy this, too. I am going to have to see if I can convince Graham to try out the new Trader Sam's location at the Polynesian at Walt Disney World.

I love your sweatshirt!

I love it, too. I am not too keen on hoodies as the hood tends to get in the way so I was very happy to find a zip up sweatshirt without the hood.

Nice job on the private photopass photographer!

That was most certainly an unexpected bonus.

Last days are always tough, but you really packed in a lot of fun :) Too bad about the rain but bonus that it cleared out some of the crowds. Too bad about that crabby guest complaining about the parade.

Your pancakes sounded delicious!

Some of Cindarella's looks had me chuckle. All thos princesses and faeries really looked the part. Nice pictures!

Thank you for sharing this wonderful trip with us. :)

They are definitely not my favourite part of the trip. I really can't understand people sometimes. Sure, I was disappointed that every time I was at Disneyland in the evening the fireworks ended up being cancelled, but safety comes first and I would not have dreamed to complain.

Your pancakes sounded delicious!

It was and I am not normally a fan of pancakes.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful trip with us. :)

I am glad that you enjoyed it. Hopefully we get the chance on my next trip to meet in person again.

Rainy last day. Still, you packed in a few M&G in the time you had left.
That PP photog did a great job with those pictures of you. Lovely set.
Thanks for sharing this trip with us.

I'm planning on it. I know we haven't talked much about it, and if another day is better than Saturday that's ok too. We'll be there until Wednesday the 7th.

Corinna,

Thanks for sharing your holiday with us and I so enjoyed it. Not as much as you but I it was great to follow along.

Even if it did rain, you still looked ot have a fun filled day, and I just love the photo of Graham "Ice Skating" with Olaf.

I really like the way those photos came out and I can't believe that they did not have a Photopass photographer in that location.

Catching up again. Your holiday time tour looks fab. I love all the pics from the hotels on Thanksgiving day as well. Sad that you got a rainy day for the end of your trip. We were lucky with the rain.
I think it's funny as well that you mentioned all the beggars outside of Disney. The only place I noticed people "begging" was at the gates of Disney there was a guy there every night playing Saxophone but he was good

I found the beggars a real problem which I why I have decided to stay onsite for my solo trip. They were right by the gate, at the bus shelters and close to the McDonalds that was close to our hotel.

Day 23

When we got up that morning, the realisation struck that this amazing trip had really come to an end. We had to get up at silly o'clock. We had another 8:30 flight and with this being classified as an international flight even though we were only going as far as Philadelphia on this leg. The latest pick up time I could choose was between 4:30 and 4:45. We got up at 4:00 and got dressed and ready. I packed the last odds and ends and we double-checked that we had not forgotten anything. We then headed to the front of the hotel. We needed to check out, but the door to reception on the hotel side was locked. I decided to walk around to the door on the carpark side and that was open. We quickly checked out and then went over to the pick up area. Supershuttle arrived right at the beginning of our pick up window. We were the last people to be picked up so we headed straight to the freeway.

Traffic was very light at that hour so we got to the airport in plenty of time. Check in was quick and painless as was security. So we found ourselves at the gate with 3 hours to spare. I had hoped that we would get some breakfast, but this area was just a huge building site and there was nothing in the vicinity that was open. So we just found some seats near the gate and relaxed. There was a socket near where we were sitting so I could plug in my iPad and catch up online without worrying that I would not have enough charge to see me through the flight.

Time did go quite quickly and soon it was time to board. The usual thing happened that tends to happen on most domestic flights in the USA. They had called everybody with priority boarding and the first two groups and then they were asking people to gate check their hand luggage. Shortly afterwards there was announcement that the overhead bins were full. I wonder if they used to have the same problems before they started to charge for checked luggage. In any case, it is ridiculous what goes through as hand luggage. Some of the said hand luggage I would describe as a medium sized suitcase. They either need to drastically increase storage space or they need to enforce maximum sizes for hand luggage like most other airlines do.

Once everybody was on the plane and all the hand luggage stowed, the flight was smooth. I alternated reading and napping and we soon arrived in Philadelphia. I had not really appreciated on the outbound just how big Philadelphia airport is. It also became obvious that the airport is organized in a very strange way. We arrived in Terminal 1 East and our onward flight was from Terminal 1 West. This was actually further than our gates were on the outbound where we arrived in Terminal 1 West and departed from Terminal C. Of course, what did not help either is that our gate was the last gate in Terminal 1 West. Still, we had plenty of time and it was actually nice to stretch our legs as we had spent most of the day sitting down for one reason or another. We also came across something really interesting. They had a scale model of the Liberty Bell made from Lego on display in the area between the two parts of Terminal 1. I was very glad that we came across this.

By that stage we were both hungry. Unfortunately given the size of the airport and the fact that this is a major hub, there were surprisingly few food options. There were a couple of restaurants in Terminal 1 West, but they were really small and absolutely packed. In the end we retraced our steps as we had seen a small food court as we were walking towards our departure gate. We both opted for a combination plate at Maki of Japan. I had a double serving of Bourbon Chicken with fried rice and Graham went with the orange chicken and the spicy chicken with fried rice. I had one last orange soda and Graham had a Coke. Once we finished our meal, we headed back towards our gate.

Graham spotted some massage chairs on the way and decided that he rather fancied this. I left my hand luggage with him and went exploring. I quite often see Ghirardelli chocolate in duty free shops in the USA and wanted to check if I could find the Peppermint Bark squares. Between the various duty free shops, they had a good selection of Ghirardelli chocolate, but there were no Peppermint Bark squares to be found anywhere. I did not have any more luck with the dark chocolate version of Patron XO Café either. On my travels, I did however pass a Starbucks and I decided to get an Americano for Graham and a Chestnut Praline Latte for myself. While I was waiting for my coffee, I quickly checked Facebook and I saw some rather disturbing news. Apparently there was a loud bang on the Disney Magic followed by thick black smoke and there were some reports that the Magic had lost power. I was quite sad about this as the Magic will always have a special place in my heart. Fortunately whatever it was seems to have resolved itself quickly as by the time we got on our flight, power had been restored and the Magic was back underway.

When I got back, Graham’s massage had finished and he was actually helping somebody trying to get online using the free Wi-Fi. They managed to get it sorted. We picked up our stuff and headed over to the gate. We found seats with a socket nearby so I was able to recharge my iPad. Once I had finished my coffee, I decided to have one more look at the closest duty free shop. They did not have the dark chocolate version of the Patron XO Café, but they did have the normal version and I was starting to run low on this. So I decided to buy a bottle. I then went back and went online until it was time to get on the plane.

This time there was no issue with the hand luggage. I suppose the fact that this was an international flight and people could check in one bag free of charge had something to do with as did the fact that we had a larger plane with more storage space. There was a short delay while we were waiting for clearance to leave the position. Once we were at cruising altitude, they offered dinner, but I was not hungry and just had something to drink. I spent that part of the flight reading. Once everything had been cleared away, I decided to get some sleep. This was a wise decision as this must have been the shortest transatlantic flight I have ever been on. It took 5 hours and 10 minutes. We must have had one heck of a tailwind. I pretty much slept the whole time. When we got to Manchester, we were so early that there was still another aircraft on the gate we were supposed to be at so we had to wait for a while until the other aircraft moved off.

Even with this delay, we managed to be on our way home before we were even supposed to land. Passport control was not too busy and we did not have long to wait for our luggage. As we started our journey home during the middle of rush hour, we decided to take to the trains as we did not fancy getting stuck in a traffic jam. We were lucky and there was a train leaving shortly after we got to the station. We then decided to take the tram for the last part of the way and did not have to wait long for this either. When we got home, we quickly checked if the damage done by the leaks before our holiday had been fixed, which it had. We then put our luggage in the living room and went to get some sleep.

Welcome home.
4 am? That's early indeed.

Looks like it was 'plain sailing' for your trip home (even if it wasn't quite that for the Magic).

Glad to hear that your trip home was as easy as it was.

Please remind me to look for your Peppermint bark, I know they had this winter at the Sam's here in a big bag of individual wrapped pieces. Maybe we can work something out, my MIL loves the Kirsch chocolates that you can only get in Europe.

Welcome home.
4 am? That's early indeed.

Yes, it was.. However, for my recent business trip I had to be out and about even earlier.

Looks like it was 'plain sailing' for your trip home (even if it wasn't quite that for the Magic).

It was one of the smoothest trips we had. Fortunately the Magic seems to be doing fine. She currently is sailing around Europe.

Glad to hear that your trip home was as easy as it was.

It was really was a nice easy trip.

Please remind me to look for your Peppermint bark, I know they had this winter at the Sam's here in a big bag of individual wrapped pieces.

I sure will. Normally don't like peppermint to the point that I spent years trying to find a toothpaste that is not mint flavoured. However, for some reason I have an obsession with the Mint Juleps at Disneyland and the Ghiradelli Peppermint Bark.

Maybe we can work something out, my MIL loves the Kirsch chocolates that you can only get in Europe.

Are those the ones you are thinking of:

Corinna, this was again a lovely trip report to read. Thank you very much for all the effort you put into it!

I totally agree with you about the hand luggage craziness that goes on on US domestic flights. For me that is one reason why I prefer to not connect in the US. I know we have different opinions on where to connect. :goodvibes But I have serious hand luggage separation anxiety issues ;) so the thought of not being able to carry my stuff onto the plan just really horrifies me!
