Renting a car after June 8th?

Just thought I would have a nosy on the DVLA website and found reports of the website struggling to cope with the changes. Some car hire companies had a lot of queues.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-32916968 hope the link works.

It would be interesting to know from those who hired a car at MCO/Sanford today.

I've had some feedback that nobody outside the UK was asked for their code etc so far, but news like this does take some time to filter down the line!

Meanwhile, in the UK, long queues at our counters, hacked off employees and customers, and a very unhelpful dvla! Can't speak for other rental companies, but Hertz UK are accepting a printout from the DVLA website showing your license summary and endorsement info (if any) as long as the print is less than 30 days old.

If you haven't been able to create a share code to take with you to the rental counter in the UK then bring your national insurance number, we can check online directly (with your permission). All else fails, we can call up the DVLA on your behalf and they will speak to you and after verifying your details provide a share code then and there which we can use to check the license.

It's all overly complicated and a frustration for all to say the least!

Thanks for the update Barry, it sounds like a complete cluster!!! Hmmm, the fact that a government department cannot roll out a policy change does not surprise me in the least. I actually have no idea whatsoever what they hope to gain from this.

There was a spokesman on Sky trying to explain but didn't catch it all. He was saying all departments are removing paper, its slow and not upto date. Plus they issue upto 500,000 new paper parts each year due to people losing them, costs more to process than the fee. That was as much as I heard.
Hopefully the site will improve, how many like me have just gone on for a nosey? can't help.

We were encouraged to log in and play around with the site to familiarise ourselves with it, so that wouldn't have helped! The real problem is that it puts more responsibility on a renter to bring a little code in with them. And it's case sensitive, so we've already had some customers who were prepared for it coming in with the code written in all caps or all small and it just doesn't work....

Latest info from FloridaCarHire.com

***IMPORTANT LICENCE UPDATE***
From 8th June 2015 the paper counterpart of the UK driving licence was abolished and replaced with an online service. There have been concerns over how this will effect customers who are renting with us and if they are required to provide a code from DVLA.

Our supplier in Florida will not be requiring renters to show their counterpart information nor provide this code. We do not require anything further from customers other than to present their valid photo card (or paper, if applicable) licence.

I rented from Alamo at MCO on the 10th June and they did not even mention it. They just wanted the plastic licence.

Another sites quotes correspondence from Alamo stating they do not require the code so hopefully no one will be caught out if they are not aware of the updates by DVLA.

Rented from Alamo at Disney Car Care yesterday. Only interested in DH plastic and my old style paper licences.

Yep had a friend confirm the other day the same while in US, it looks like Alamo are only asking for Photocard licence...

We were only asked for photocard licence, no code when renting from Alamo at MCO on June 26
