Apologies if there is a thread already about insulin injections, I looked through a few pages and didn't see any but maybe I missed it! I am trying to get pregnant and my blood sugars aren't so great, so my doctor put me on insulin injections 3x daily. Our trip is in November and will be my first time traveling with insulin. I have heard Frio pouches are good to get. We are staying at Coronado Springs and Animal Kingdom Lodge, do all rooms have refrigerators?

We do not have a thread specific to insulin injections as that varies depending on the inidividual's treatment plan and BG levels throughout the day. Frio cases are good, my DH uses them. I believe there are mini-fridges in all CSR and ALK rooms. Did you have any other questions?

Enjoy your vacation!

Any issues with bringing the needles/pens into the park through security check? Would the bathroom be the best place to inject? And how long can a pen last in the Frio? Hoping that we could be out all day not have to go back to the room. We're also on the dining plan, so wondering if anyone had issues with insulin + heavier than usual eating.

There is no problem bringing your supplies into the park. I believe a FRIO is advertised as keeping items at a safe steady temp for up to 36 hours -- maybe longer, though it will depend on the outdoor temps. My DH re-soaks his every couple of days. You'll definitely be good for a full day in the parks. Where to inject is up to you; some people do it easily wherever they happen to be. As to eating and insulin -- I suggest you ask your treating physician if you should alter your treatment plan for vacation. Keep in mind that in addition to atypical eating habits there will be a lot of walking and activity to impact BG levels as well. Follow your doctor's advice.

Enjoy your vacation!

Hi - I never injected insulin but I have injected other pen-type medication. I just did it in line and would recap and dispose of the needle the next time I was in a bathroom. I was able to do it in my stomach so it was easy. Quick alcohol wipe, dial, inject cap. took all of 30 seconds. Its not for everyone, but it can work in a lot of cases.

all Disney room have fridges but I would not put my insulin the n the fridge ( I am type 1 and come to Disney about once a month and I am here now) your insulin will be fine in room temperature for 28 days and the chance of it freezing in the fridge is great ( happens to me 3 times) I have finally learned not to use the Disney or any hotel fridge

I ditto what the PP said. The hotel fridges can freeze your insulin.

If you're only taking mealtime insulin, (novolog, humalog, apidra) then you will need to talk to your dr about adjusting for restaurant meals. Most of them are very heavy in fat, which slows the absorption of carbs. Even if you give yourself the appropriate amount of insulin for the carbs, you might still have a lot of trouble. If you're taking a different kind of insulin (NPH, Regular) then you might be fine with your meals but you would need to eat exactly on schedule.

I suggest grabbing a copy of "Using Insulin" by John Walsh. It will really help you out.

Most bathrooms have sharps disposals as well. When my son was still on needles we just did it wherever/whever but it's up to your comfort level.
