With the new Disney Springs looking like it's going to be a big improvement on the current version of Downtown Disney in terms of food, shopping and entertainment, together with the walkway from SSR does anyone else feel that the rather unloved SSR is going to become more popular?

It will effectively be like having loads of resort dining options within an easy walking distance.

SSR is for people who don't crave the parks and constant Disneyana. I would not say it is unloved -- it's for the discerning traveller. ;-)). We are looking forward to DTD's completed renovations but only because it will make it easier to navigate to Raglan Road. :-)

No. No I don't. Not at all. :rolleyes1

It very well could. Visited DTD today and love the new direction it's going--more of a CityWalk/Downtown DisneyLand vibe that promotes more intimacy of venues and more unique shops. SSR may increase in popularity as a result.

For us it won't change our thoughts. Not a fan of SSR. I can appreciate others like it or maybe even love it (My in-laws like it being away and quiet). If I cant walk, monorail or boat to a park its going to be hard to be at the top of my list.

I think it might, initially. DTD has always been a great destination for additional dining/shopping in close proximity to SSR. When the newness and curiosity wears off....who knows.

I have a friend who swears by SSR with little kids & is even more enthused with the new DS construction. Her touring strategy is to RD parks, go back to the hotel for swimming & naps & then have an early dinner at DS. She likes that they can WALK to is many exciting dining options that are adult friendly ( aka can get a cocktail) and walk back easily in case of a meltdown or early bedtime etc. Her family only does nighttime entertainment once a trip though.

Well, I for one have stayed at SSR many times, doing so again in Oct for F&W and really enjoy the resort. My home resort is often full up and I'm happy SSR is large enough to accommodate. Beautiful grounds, wonderful spa, great golf and the Turf Club makes a good prime rib! I don't need to be near a park to feel the Disney Magic! And we enjoy DTD, so it's a win. Win!

I go to DTD at least twice every vacation, so for me staying at SSR is at least as convenient as staying at BLT. That said, I own SSR but I've never stayed there yet. I'm trying to get to all resorts at least once and it's easy to get a room at SSR, so I'll keep it for a time when I cannot get something else. However I'm looking forward trying it and the DTD view must be superb.

Usually we stay at SSR when last minute booking and nothing else is available. We wouldn't book SSR to visit the DS mall.

We like to stay at SSR after a cruise and a later flight out. They have a nice pool and a great shower area. Ghirardelli's ice cream is a short walk away along with so many other options at DTD.

I'm sure SSR will benefit. It seems like SSR always has openings. This may give people an incentive to stay there.

They need more entertainment. Bring back the Comedy Club, and we will always make a night of it - dinner and then the comedy club, with a little shopping thrown in. Otherwise, we don't always go to DTD. Another idea is to add a theatre where they can highlight Disney musicals not currently touring or on Broadway. I think that would be a tremendous draw to DTD.

While the updates at DTD will make staying at SSR more attractive, I don't think it will change anyone's existing opinion on SSR, what someones favorite resort is or the fact that SSR will always have the best availability (just based on size alone).

They could go and put a cheap movie theatre that just showed older Disney movies, charge $5 and keep the prices high for concessions and probably make a ton. Think of the number of people who would head over to do dinner and movie to see Mary Poppins, Jungle Book, Cinderella, etc.

Minimal effect if any. More specifically likely a temporary modest effect of about 2 yrs once completed them back to usual.

The only time we've stayed at SSR was because we got developers points that had to be used there when we bought AKV. My mom and step-father don't do park intensive trips. They walked to DTD every day, they played golf, and they really took advantage of the location. At the time, they said they enjoyed it, but it was too far from everything. This made me laugh, since we were the ones who went to the various parks, and they were the ones who used DTD as an extension of the resort.

I think that for people who don't care as much about the parks, the Disney Springs additions may be an added incentive to stay at SSR, or at least a way to feel better about staying there if that is what they end up booking. But I can't imagine that it will make it more appealing for those of us with small children who still spend almost every day in a park.
