Looking into the fall adults-only Germany trip & wondering what others did?

Definitely want to spend some extra time in Europe.
Currently plan is 2 more post-nights in Munich to do some day trips: Dachau, Eagle's Nest
Maybe travel to Nuremburg/Berlin?
Pre-days, we are thinking Amsterdam, Bruges, Brussels.

Advice?

We just got home from Germany on Saturday. We didn't do any pre- or post-days due to time constraints, but I would definitely recommend spending more time in Munich. The walking tour just isn't long enough, and the final day of the trip is completely taken up by travel to/from Neuschwanstein and the farewell dinner.

Several in our group did pre-days in France (Paris and Normandy) and post-days in Munich and Vienna. ABD gives you plenty of time in Heidelberg, so I don't think a pre-day there is necessary.

If you're into castles, there are a couple more that were built by Ludwig II (who built Neuschwanstein). A trip to Chimsee to visit Herrenchiemsee is definitely worth the time and effort (I busted there years ago), and I've heard Linderhof palace is also beautiful (haven't been there, though).

Here is some advice.....

You would need one full day to visit Dachau

You would need Two full days to see The Eagle's Nest ..... It is a controlled BUS System in place (Unless you walk).

Best to stay overnight to give justice to the tour.

Yes you can join a tour and be driven but there could be many more tourists doing the same thing.

People underestimate how far the distances are from place to place.

UNLESS you wish to spend All of your time in a coach ,, train or plane.

To see Berlin you would need at least 3 days ( Munich to Berlin 1 day, Berlin 1 day , Back to Munich 1 day.

Fly to and from Amsterdam.

Brussels to Bruges 1 day , Bruges to Brussels 1 day , Fly Brussels to Munich 1 day.

..........................................................................

Here is what you should do...... Hire a car in Munich .... And Drive ..... like I do

And Drive to the Eagle's Nest yourself. you see far far more .AND Go

to Lake Constance ( Bodensee ) & Friedrichshafen home of The Zeppliens ( ? )

Cross the lake into Switzerland & again you see the Castles on your own time.

( If you need any More info send me an "e " mail or Private Message.)

There is no point in spending a lot of money & rushing from place to place.

I am in Munich ( Wednesday 24th ) and I asked various Hotel people How long would it take to Drive to Berlin from Munich ?

Their reply was THey just Might do the journey in 8 hours ONE WAY ( No long stops & 2 drivers )

We did Germany ABD two years ago and just returned from Central Europe ABD yesterday. We arrived one day early in Heidleberg, which helped with the time difference. I would definitely add days in Munich. I wish we had!! After this recent trip, we have fallen in love with Vienna. I think the Eagle's Nest is pretty far from Munich. We visited it this trip (you stay at the Kempenski right at the bottom of the entrance in Berchtesgaden on the Central Europe ABD)

Thanks for the tips so far. Here's how our plans are starting to shape up:
  • Fly into Amsterdam - 2 casual days in the city to acclimate to the time change
  • Train to Brussels & use it as a base for day trips to Bruges,
  • Train to Heidelberg to meet up with ABD.
  • 3 post days in Munich: Munich sites, Dachau, Nuremberg, Garmisch, Salzberg?

This is just my humble opinion...but I would add Berlin and drop some of the side trips from Munich. In 2 full days, you could see a lot of Berlin and the history there is amazing. Within Munich itself, there's a lot to see and do that you could easily fill 2-3 days (such as Schloss Nymphemberg, Residenz Museum, BMW factory, Allianz Arena, beer gardens, etc. in addition to a day trip to Dachau).

We have found that when we do ABDs, we like only doing pre-days and no post-days. We're usually so tired (and spoiled with the guides), that the post-days feel anti-climactic. Last year when we did the Germany ABD, we did Berlin and Munich before heading to Heidelberg (since the year before, everyone was too tired after Scotland to really enjoy being in London). Again, this is just my opinion and just how my family is. :)

I'd love to do Berlin, but the travel day to get there is my issue.
Did you take the train for your pre-days?

Last year, we flew into Berlin and then took a train to Munich (it was around 5 1/2 hours) and then another train from Munich to Heidelberg (this was only about 2 hours). We bought tickets directly from the Deutsche Bahn website and they had some pretty good deals. Don't buy tickets from other sites like "Rail Europe" since they are much more expensive.

We're doing Germany next year and are just brainstorming right now. One possibility is to do a little Disneyland Paris before and take the train or fly to Germany. Another thought is to do Brussels and/or Luxembourg for a few days before.

Cousin Orville- when are you guys going next year? I am thinking about booking next year for me and my Dd12.

FYI - DD & I were a bit disappointed with Disneyland Paris. We went while she was studying in London. Not up to par with the customer service that we consider "Disney". If you do have time, add a day or two in Munich. There isn't enough time on the actual AbD to see much and it looked like a neat city!

our family just got back from the Germany trip and we did 10 day pre trip which we did Berlin, Dresden, Nuremberg, little Rothenburg, and Wurzburg. Nuremberg is amazing especially old Nuremberg, make sure you go to nazi rally grounds with documentation centre (absolutely amazing). one place you should look at is Dresden, it was probably the most amazing architecture in Germany hands down. my 3 favourite places on our trip was Dresden, Nuremberg, and Rothenburg.
just my 2 cents. Berlin is great to go see the wall etc, but Dresden has a lot more to offer
