The 24 Hour Event is an Insomniac's Dream - Solo Trip Report May 2015

You are more observant than I am! :D I am limited to 10 pics per post, so I had to edit out the breakfast bit and must have missed that line. The pic will be included in the next post coming up later tonight!

I was just trying to build suspense..... :P haha

HAHA… Consider suspense sufficiently built … AND POST THE REST OF THE TR! lol :P

BREAKFAST WITH POOH AND THE ADVENTURE(LAND) THAT FOLLOWED
This is definitely becoming a must-do for my trips as I seem to love grabbing breakfast at Crystal Palace at least once each trip (breaking from that tradition for my December trip though  ). I must admit that like most buffets on property, it is hard to wow me with the food being served... and this one is no exception. The 'Pooh Puffs' aside, there isn't anything really special about this restaurant with exception for one thing.... Winnie the Pooh and his gang are here!

Tigger's Manual Zoom Technique had me laughing so hard this was the most flattering pic of the bunch

I didn't mention it earlier, but I was bounding as Christopher Robin for the event for a couple of reasons: 1. a yellow polo and shorts was definitely a good move when combating the Florida sun 2. I thought it'd be fun to go to breakfast as Christopher to make one of my favorite breakfasts on property that much more special and 3. Winnie the Pooh (and Tigger and Eyore and Piglet and ….) are some of my all time favorite characters, so I felt I should honor them with that little Disney bounding nod. The breakfast was nothing to boast about and eating by yourself doesn't lend to a lot of great conversation (although my server was extra attentive despite it being pretty busy that morning), but it certainly hit the spot, as I hadn't eaten since lunch the previous day. I was nervous this would put me in a 'food coma' but in reverse it actually gave me a bit of energy (the 4 cups of coffee helped a little too :coffee: :hyper:)

After breakfast, the strategy was to limit the walking by tackling the lands individually so that I didn't have to waste energy walking back and forth across the park (that and I was soooo stuffed I don't think my body could handle waddling back and forth across the park). First up? ADVENTURELAND (mostly because it was next door)!
8:40-9:40 Jungle Cruise
Magic Carpets of Aladdin
Swiss Family Treehouse

I don't know about you, but I hold the Jungle Cruise near and dear because of the extremely limited memories I have as a kid (mercifully most were from Disney), the adventure and “oooohs” and “aaaaahhhs” was something that stuck with me. I know the ride is pretty tired now and the cult following it now has for it's one-liners can be tiresome and annoying, but I love this ride. The fact that it had been closed for refurb on my last two trips meant it was objective #1 after breakfast and so I made my way over there. Being only around 9am, Adventureland was pretty dead still and so there was only a “5 minute wait” so I jumped in line. DSC08231 (2) (1024x575).jpg

Trunks are Optional...

The ride was great and I actually had a great skipper, Bernadette, who phone in a few lines but was really personable with the riders; it certainly helped that we all got really into the ride as well. Simply put, it was a fantastic “3 month” trip =)

What other way is there to celebrate a great 3 month boat ride than by getting on another boat with some pirates? I honestly have an impossible time ranking favorite rides, but for nostalgic sake, Pirates of the Caribbean has to be among the few of my absolute favorites. I love Space Mountain as much as BTMR, Jungle almost as much as Pirates, Haunted Mansion as much as It's A Small.... what a sec...

As I get older though, I certainly have much more appreciation for 'the classics' and the history behind them and Pirates is one that fits the bill. I remember yelling at my dad to shut up as he sang along to 'Yo Ho' and fighting my pirate brothers and whistling at 'Rover' to give me the keys. It's definitely a pirate's life for me!

After living the Pirate's Life, I wrapped up my adventure with my first (and probably last) ride on the Magic Carpets. Much like Dumbo, it is one of those “family rides” that are a little awkward for a solo, male traveler to ride. At the end of the day, if I enjoy it enough, I wouldn't let that affect me, but it wasn't really my thing. Thankfully I had an old couple there with me (I don't know why I didn't realize until I boarded that there would be people in the carpet with me) who I spent most of the ride turning around and conversing with. I had the 'control' so I propped it up and we conversed about our day as we enjoyed the views, which admittedly are pretty awesome. I should have felt a little awkward about riding that one by myself, but with such good conversation with fellow Disney fans, that big ol' grin came back in force.

Loving the pics! And love CP as well! Christopher Robin was a great choice! You're pretty much cementing that I have to do this next year. Awesome TR! Eager for more.

Yay Christopher Robin! I keep going back and forth on whether or not I want to do CP for my solo trip next year - mostly because I've never met Piglet :). One of these years I am determined to do the 24 hour event!

Thanks for the nice comments! You really should check out the event one of these years, it has a feel like MNSSHP (minus the great Halloween/fall decorations), but you get to party for 24 hours and not just 5. I think every Dis fan owes it to themselves to experience it at least once :-)

Food is average/pretty good (I am an absolute sucker for breakfast buffets though), but getting to celebrate Friendship Day with Pooh and the Gang makes it totally worthwhile (for me at least)! I have seen Piglet at the UK pavilion and during the MNSSHP, but I think CP has the only set one? Not sure on that one though.

FINDING MY 'GROOVE'? UMMMM SUUUUURE?

By this point, I was doing pretty good. I was wasn't feeling tired at all. There was no rumbly in my tumbly. And I was beginning to check rides off of my list. Next up? FRONTIERLAND!

9:40-12:00 Splash Mountain
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
Walt Disney World Railroad (Frontierland-Frontierland)
11:50-Noon Find spot for Festival of Fantasy Parade

I mentioned in the previous post, but I have a hard time ranking favorite rides, especially when you have both Big Thunder Mountain Railroad AND Splash Mountain potentially fighting for the top spot. I give you a glimpse into the battle in my head...
  • Best ride during the day? Splash
  • Best ride at night? BTMR
  • In the mood for getting wet? Maybe....
  • Best overall story? Splash
  • Better thrill? BTMR
  • Repeat-ability? Obviously
  • Longer ride? Splash, but only because it moves slower
  • Ride Queues? BTMR has more detail but gets super hot and smelly
  • Mountain-ness? Ummm.... both?
It's just too difficult for me!! The same goes for comparing BTMR to Space Mountain, Pirates and Haunted Mansion. Let's just say that I enjoyed both of them equally that morning and move on. Shall we?

After tackling the Mountains for the day (or do we count 7DMT as one even though it's not technically called a 'mountain'?), I headed towards the Railroad for a nice, relaxing ride around the park. Nothing like taking 10 and just relaxing as you watch the chaos... I mean enjoyment radiate around the park. However, as I was riding, the train, I realized that I had missed the Swiss Family Treehouse when I was in Adventureland. I know that technically it is not a “ride”, although I wish Mr. Robinson would have created some escalators :P Still, it offers some of the best views in the park. And I love taking a few minutes up there looking out at the park. I know the angle would be off a little, but I would love to catch Wishes or potentially a sunrise from up there...

View From The Trees

You probably have noticed by this point, the initial plan of attack was pretty much out the window by this point. I had missed a few scheduled rides and others I had skipped and came back to. That was part of the fun that day, trying to re-schedule everything that was missed or perhaps that mother nature was throwing my way....

FESTIVAL OF FANTASY PARADE
The body can be a mysterious thing some times. That morning, my body was doing great. It didn't fuss about getting an hour or two of sleep, it didn't whine as I started putting it through the paces around the park that morning. But after climbing the stairs at of The Treehouse, my body hit one of the several “walls” that would come that day. Luckily for me, the next portion of the day involved plenty of sitting around, starting with the Festival of Fantasy, which has immediately jumped to number three as my favorite parades (1. MNSSHP and 2. MSEP).

So I grabbed a Dole Whip Float (for the record, I prefer the Citrus Swirl; but I was passing the newly re-located Aloha Isle) and headed to search out a spot for the parade. I had seen the parade before on Main Street, and looking at my pics, it seemed Main Street wasn't an appropriate 'backdrop'. I was thinking of the Castle but with the sun blazing at ~95 degrees, I didn't want to sit out in the hub without shade. But trees as a backdrop? Shade from the Frontier Trading Post? Yes please! I should note that there was about a 5 foot gap between the tape and the porch I was sitting at. Thankfully nobody moved up to the tape, so just as the parade started, I moved up and sat on the (really hot) ground so as to not have obstructed views. I lathered on the sunblock, finished my float and got ready to enjoy the parade... DSC08525 (2) (1024x693).jpg DSC08546 (2) (1024x652).jpg DSC08562 (2) (1024x575).jpg DSC08573 (2) (1024x669).jpg DSC08589 (2) (1024x627).jpg DSC08603 (2) (575x1024).jpg

DSC08653 (2) (575x1024).jpg DSC08669 (2) (1024x575).jpg

Using the last picture as a reminder not to be "Grumpy", I gathered up my gear and walked the 100 yards to hang out with some bears...

Ahh… Country Bears coming up … One of my favorites… Makes me think of my Great Grandaddy! Spent many a trip watching Big Al (his favorite). Fond memories, indeed! Beautiful pictures!

Will be seeing the Festival of Fantasy parade for the first time in 2 weeks. Love these pics...will have to watch from this area!

It would be cool if they did this event during different times of year maybe....fall would be a GREAT time to do it! I get it's a summer kick-off thing, but still. The Halloween decor would add a lot to the middle of the night experience.

As corny as it sounds, it really is a festival of fantasy; I thought they did a fantastic job with it. But honestly, you don't need to take my tip on the viewing area; I was speaking from a photographer's perspective. Although the trees made for a nice background, a castle angle around the hub area would definitely be more ideal imo. But if shade is of the utmost importance (and in 2 weeks I imagine it very well could be), standing in the shade of a store front is great with that a/c trickling out.... It certainly played a huge factor for me when it was 95 outside :worship:

I'll mention it in my final review with a little more detail, but the weather alone would potentially be enough reason for me not to come back to the event. So I would definitely agree that a cooler time of year would be more ideal. It does make sense as a summer kickoff though so I can't really blame Disney, but man oh man would it be awesome with the fall decor out :-)

Yes I do think finding a good shady spot will be a huge factor for me this time of year. As well as being able to quickly get inside should bad weather pop up. I think that would trump the castle view for this trip. For my December trip I will definitely check it out from the hub area with better weather and smaller crowds.

The video and pics of the parade that I have seen to make it seem to be very appropriately named.

Maybe Orlando will have a record breaking cold snap next May? Ha. :)

Must... Stay... Awake...

I think I am starting to understand when people say they need that afternoon break back at their resorts. I am usually gung ho from the moment I enter the park until well after park close, no matter how much or how little sleep I get. But on this day, I think my body was finally standing up for itself. I don't blame it after the abuse I gave it all week and then to expect to stay awake for 24+ hours (at Disney World mind you), but it was putting up a pretty good fight. But for the love of Disney we must persevere! That was probably why I made one of my goals to stay awake for the full 24, because otherwise I would have had some major issues as my afternoon was chalked full of shows and attractions, putting the rides on the back burner.

Noon-1:30pm Festival of Fantasy Parade (shoot in Liberty Square)
Liberty Square Riverboat
Country Bear Jamboree
1:30-5:00pm Lunch?
Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor
Stitch's Great Escape
Carousel of Progress

As we all know, Disney offers several great nap... I... I mean... attractions and shows, so the goal was to try and stay out of the heat of the afternoon as much as possible and enjoy them! Disclaimer: I would never (intentionally) use a show as an nap opportunity as I truly can appreciate all of them (except the Circle of Life film, thanks for the blow to my self-esteemo_O). On any other day, if my body was fighting me as much as it did that day, I would have gladly given up to head back to the resort).

So clap your hands and
Stomp your feet and
Try to keep right with 'em.

Blood on the groouunnnndddd......

Honestly, that is such a great time and I really do enjoy this show, which is odd given how much I dislike country/folk music in general. But then again, I like classic symphony and jazz, so what do I know? :P I get why people might think it is lame and hokey and dated and all that, but if you "put yourself in it" and have a positive and open mentality, I think people will realize it's got some catchy tunes, memorable one liners and imo a great calamitous ending worthy of a big smile. It never ceases to amaze me seeing kids and adults going in complaining or not knowing what to expect and yet they are tapping their feet or clapping along or laughing throughout. Not everything will appeal to everyone, but making the most out of those moments is great for you and the crowd you are with. I only throw that out there because one kid had the audacity to say, "that was the stupidest thing I have ever seen." Apparently Mama don't whip Little Buford... :D Well, folks, this concludes my mini soapbox moment. So thanks for "bear"ing with me to the "bear" end.

After that though, I was starting to loose steam and the first thing to go was my camera. I stowed it away for the majority of the afternoon as it was one less thing to waste energy. As sad as that sounds, lugging around a 20 pound camera bag and having to swing it off the shoulders just to take a picture or have the camera strap pulling my head down was kind of exhausting. So I put it away as the shows don't really lend themselves to much in terms of photography anyways. You are probably asking yourself, "why didn't you rent a locker then?" It's true that I could have. I was there plenty early enough to snag one, but I thought I was going to be more ambitious with the camera than I ended up being that day. I was looking to switch out lenses for shots and set up the tripod to shoot some "park benches", but honestly the stubbornness war ragged on all day and by the afternoon I just conceded to the fact that I would need the tripod after dark and that the gear was worth lugging around all day. Tip for the future, RENT A DANG LOCKER IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO CARRY BAGS ALL DAY! :rotfl: Hindsight is 20/20 though, and honestly I wouldn't have complained or even needed one if I wasn't going on with an hour of sleep. Lessons learned people! ::yes::

After a leisurely ride on the Liberty Square Riverboat (a relaxing way to take in the park!), I hit up Mickey's PhilharMagic. I honestly cannot explain why, but that show is always a misty eyed moment for me. Donald is a riot and it's cute and "sense"sational (sorry I couldn't resist), but when 'Part of Your World' and "A Whole New World" come on, I can't help it. I guess I am a hopeless romantic... Anyone else get that way?

After that it was Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor (apparently I suffer from anxiety, because I always get so nervous that I will have to be the 'free churros' or even worse 'feels the urge to get up and dance' guy. I am normally a social being and don't mind making a fool of myself, but there is something about that show... :confused3

Then it was time to hit up my favorite non-ride at the Magic Kingdom... The Carousel of Progress. I. love. this. show. Again, I get why people dislike it (they are totally wrong on this one), but I get why. However, for me, I remember this one as a kid and I remember being so intrigued seeing progress advance through the decades and my dad singing that tune and how I now find myself whistling it from time to time when I am day dreaming. I don't know why I feel the way I do about it, but to me, it is 'classic' Disney and to me it screams "Walt's presence" (which was obviously heavy for it's creation), PLUS it is said to be his favorite ride. So can we really argue about this one? One of these days though I am actually going to photograph the thing (I had my camera out and ready to go). However, I always get the CM who says no photography (apparently that isn't always the case), but one of these days I might try being rebellious... But there's a great big beautiful tomorrow shining at the end of everyday. OH YES! There's a great big beautiful tomorrow, just a dream away.... :thumbsup2

After that, it was a sad attempt to enjoy Stitch's Great Escape. Now I will (almost) always stand up for Stitch (because I do enjoy that movie and I love his mischievous and misunderstood character) but this time around, Disney was on bad form. One KUKA arm was down and the other was on the fritz. Some lady was terrified and so she blasted her phone's "flash" to illuminate everything, and I swear parts of the show were missing. I want to defend it's presence in the park, but with an experience like that one, I don't blame people for not liking it.

After that, it was on to The Hall of Presidents...
DSC08728 (2) (1024x428).jpg DSC08734 (2) (1024x476).jpg
I don't think I give this attraction enough credit, and I think it is because I compare it too heavily with The American Adventure over in EPCOT. It is partially justified, but in all honesty, I think this is a great show. The animatronics are fantastic and quite frankly I don't know of a better way to share the history of our presidents.

I wanted to end it on that Patriotic note, but it was either end this post or start the next one in kind of a lame fashion. But what I want to share in the next post deserves a proper start, so I will just mention that I got to eat at Tortuga Tavern for the first time ever!
DSC08134 (2) (1024x575).jpg
Told ya it was kind of lame :D But honestly, since I have only been during the August/September months, I miss out on certain seasonal things and this was one of them. I know it may not seem like a big deal, but when you are always looking to "experience something new" at the parks, this fits in on that basis. So I was more than happy to grab a late lunch/early dinner there.... until I saw the menu.... truthfully I found it a bit lacking/disappointing. I don't know if I really had any expectations for it, but I wasn't exactly impressed. The beef burrito that I had was pretty decent (especially in comparison to the typical 'park food'), but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here I don't think. What about you guys? Do you have any thoughts on Tortuga Tavern?

With that, I will end it here and hopefully pick it back up in the next few days! :wave2:

So true! I didn't even consider the "3pm summer showers in Florida". If you are catching the afternoon show that would certainly be a factor. Although I was looking at my weather app today ("randomly" :P) and it only got to the high 70s in Orlando... o_O And vice versa it was a little on the hot side (based on averages) when I was there in May. Ya never know with that Florida weather :-)

And I have the same thought for my December trip! With cooler temps I think I will stake out a nice spot near the castle. I think I can manage those 70s better than the 90s; its just too hot for me to stand out in the sun like that.

Oh good I'm not the only person who "randomly" checks the weather in Orlando. :) High 70's?! Geez. PLEASE let it be like that in a week and a half! Early December weather is so perfect. At least it was 2 years ago when I went then. I wore a jacket part of the morning at MK and a long sleeve t-shirt for most of the day at Epcot. A slight chill in the air at night made it feel like December. It was awesome.

Just wanted to give a heads up and apology to everyone reading along, but as I was working on my posts on Saturday night, I suddenly got a wicked severe ear infection (picture snot bubble crying, flopping on the ground and screaming into pillows with the pain that I was feeling). Needless to say I wasn't capable then of writing more and now the doc has me drugged up pretty good...
tumblr_m83bbz1ixZ1rvjt2vo2_250.gif
So I will try and persevere as best as possible for the following week! But in case things are slow going for a bit, you at least know why. Thanks for understanding!

:wave2:

SO many thoughts on this post. So, so many.

1.) I have not done Country Bear Jamboree since I was 5, on my one trip ever with my family. I don't really remember it. I have been debating if I should do it again and this convinced me that I should and that was I crazy to consider not doing it.
2.) Pretty sure Little Buford would be well-served to learn some manners. :)
3.) I adore Mickey's Philharmagic. You aren't alone on that one.
4.) I adore x 100 CoP, for pretty much all the reasons you stated. It's just classic Walt and it transports you to a different time and place. It's like a window into Walt's mind.
5.) The history major in me can't get enough of The Hall of Presidents. Another window into Walt's mind as well. It's fascinating.
6.) I know I couldn't come up with one as good as this one is so far, but now I'm wanting to do a trip report for this fast-approaching trip! This is fun to read and I can imagine fun to write as you relive all the fun memories from your trip!

Feel better soon!
