Visiting Universal for the first time...what are recommended hotels?

We probably don't want to spend extra $ to stay onsite (we are going at a slow time of year so Unlimited Express Pass probably isn't necessary). It will just be myself and my daughter, so I want somewhere where we'd feel very safe and secure. :-)

Thanks!

We just stayed at Drury Inn in May. First time. We got a great rate and we were pleased with hotel and location.

We had a great rate when we stayed at Cabana Bay. You don't get Express Pass but it has a free shuttle bus and is very nice.

Definitely check out the specials at Cabana Bay. So worth it to stay there. They can be found on the US site or mousesavers.com
Otherwise I suggest the Hyatt Place across the street. It is a suite hotel that offers a free breakfast.

"safe & secure" I'd go with the Cabana Bay. Check prices, it might surprise you with the value.

The Hilton Garden Inn would be my next pick.

Cabana Bay! Reasonably priced, free shuttle, and beautiful pools! Not to mention the cool theming!! We added the unlimited express to our passes.

Unlimited Express is always a value even during the "slow" season. On the lower end we would stay on property to ensure its a vacation by either walking or taking a boat to the park. Royal Pacific.
