PTR: And now for something completely different - a WDW Family does DLR *(new October 9th)*

Part 11 - Hershey DISmeet for GKTW (Part 1)

For this update I am going to take a slight detour from the Disneyland Trip planning to cover the Hershey DISMeet for Give Kids The World that I attended this past weekend.

Wait, Phil, so you are doing a trip report for an unrelated trip in the middle of a Pre-Trip Report?

Why yes, yes I am.

For those of you not familiar with DISmeets, they happen around the continent (there is one up in Nova Scotia) and are about Disney fans coming together in community and to raise money for Give Kids the World - a charity that has a resort designed for families with kids that have special needs and is about providing them a opportunity to always say "yes" to kids that so often hear "no". As part of the event, the DISunplugged podcast crew comes to the location and records a show - so it is an opportunity to be in the audience, ask questions, and in the down time meet and chat with members of the podcast team and the people behind the DISboards. So basically you get to hang out with people who "get" Disney, see a podcast happen live, and all to help out some needy kids. So win-win (-win for those who win a raffle/auction ... was this us? ... you'll have to wait ti fine out)

im%20waiting_zpskox4zlad.gif

(by the way, that is an extra appropriate gif for this update .... whoa, just did a tease inside a tease there, didn't I?)

For those of you not familiar with Hershey, Pennsylvania - it's a town in central PA and is where Hershey Chocolate is headquartered and the home to the Hershey Park themepark. It is an interesting town as it is all built up around the factory and the park ... so basically the whole town smells like chocolate and you can't go 5 feet without someone throwing chocolate at you

Not-That-Theres-Anything-Wrong-With-That-Reaction-Gif-On-Seinfeld.gif

It also happens to be about 45 minutes away from where Judi's parents live so it works out great that we can go visit them for the weekend and also hit up the events for the meet.

The first event is Friday evening and is held at the Hershey Lodge which is where they got a block of rooms for those traveling. Before attending the event we had dinner at one of there restaurants, the Forebay, and were able to eat outside as the weather was so nice. We all were in Disney outfits, including Emma:
01 Emma at dinner.JPG

Oliviat got some serious coloring in during the meal:
02_Olivia coloring at dinner.JPG

Emma spent the meal lounging and eating the yummy pretzel bread that they gave out:
03_Emma enjoying her food.JPG

So I was a bad DISer and didn't take pictures of the food - but it was all good (Judi and I shared a number of small plates - with the mushroom soup with figs being one of the standouts)

When the bill comes they provide a bunch of Hershey kisses:
04_Me with check.JPG

See what I mean?

We then went down to the event location for the evening which was one of the conference rooms. Peter wouldn't cooperate for pictures during dinner but I told him I had to get at least one nice one or no more chocolate. So he cooperated:
05_Peter at meet.JPG

(you can see there everyone in attendance gets a lanyard with their name and ID that is used for the raffle that night and the next day as well as the silent auction the next day)

One of the great things about going to the meet for the 2nd year in a row was catching up with friends we met last year, including Leah (@Li Li here) who was just great with Peter! here she was giving out stickers to the kids but later in the evening he like wouldn't leave her alone and she was so great with him. So thank you!!!!!
06_Leah with Peter.JPG

For entertainment they had a barbershop quartet come in. They were pretty darn good and did a lot of older but very fun songs and people seemed to be pretty into them. Even the kids were into it:
07_Barbershop Quartet.JPG 10_Barbershop quartet and kids.JPG

They also did Disney Trivia - 2 pages covering the parks and 2 pages covering movies. Man, I am used to being the one in a group that has a lot of Disney Trivia knowledge but these were pretty tough. Definitely enjoy being a big fish in a small pond when it comes to this :rotfl:

(At my uploaded picture limit, so continued next post)

Part 12 - Hershey DISmeet for GKTW (Part 2)

One thing that was nice about the set up is that our group was off in an area that was otherwise pretty quiet - so was great for the kids to run around the hallway/outside the room a bit. Emma was off!

10_zEmma on Floor.jpg

Actually, at one point she was off and wound up grabbing onto the leg of a woman ... who turned out to be Mrs. Julie Martin from the Podcast crew. She was totally ok with it though and said she was used to her kids grabbing on her. She then said to Emma: "I love babies - I don't want any more of my own but I love looking at you!" :rotfl2:

We did put some tickets in the raffle for this night and actually wound up winning the item we most wanted which was a bunch of summer Disney beverage/kitchen stuff: Waterbottle, reusable ice cubes, and ice pop trays:

11_Olivia with Friday winning.JPG

Oh there were also prizes for those that got a lot of trivia questions right and we didn't qualify for that but some that did gave their prizes to Olivia (thus the frozen sandwich box she is also holding)

We then headed back to Judi's families for the rest of the night. On the way out we stopped by the store to get some chocolate (I mean, why not?) and Olivia wanted to get a picture next to the Bear (the Hershey Bears are a minor league hockey team):
11_zOlivia with bear.jpg

The next day, the kids were going to stay with Judi's parents as we would go to the main event sans kids (figured they wouldn't find sitting around watching a podcast all that exciting). I did feel bad though as one little girl they met the previous night was there and asking about Olivia and where she was and when she would be getting there, etc. :guilty:

After arriving we submitted the beer basket I brought and put it on the silent auction table. Not sure what it says about PA but there was another auctioned beer basket, three in the raffle area and a couple of wine baskets as well. :goodvibes My basket pulled in $80 (at least that was the last bid I saw) so that is great! I mean, tough gig having to try all the beers, but it's for the kids! ;)
13_My beer basket.JPG

We then grabbed some seats and then started to puruse the various raffle and auction items. There was a table selling homemade Disney key chains but also hand painted glasses and we really liked them - so we were there like 5 minutes and already dropped some cash - but I think they are pretty cool:
12_Glasses.JPG

Last year we sat at a table and met Amy and her mom and they were here again - so we spent some time catching up which was really nice! Just talking about upcoming trips and past trips, etc. So good to see them again!

14_us with Amy and mom.JPG

They had a yummy spread of food from Isaac's Deli and plenty to go around so having food was the next course of action. And soon it was time for the Podcast to start:
15_Podcast.JPG

Given the recent Supreme Court Ruling and how that directly relates to several members of the team, the topic for the show was "Inclusion at Disney" and it was really cool to hear so many positive stories and hit me how so much of what Walt wanted was a place of inclusion and I think he would be happy! There were quite a bit of tears shed (especially considering Theresa wasn't there). I've included the Youtube if you are interested in seeing:

You might recognize at least one person that asks a question ;)

15_xMe on Youtube.jpg

After the podcast finished I did want to introduce myself to Rhyno who is the newest member of the team and just let him know I find him quite funny on the podcasts and we wound up talking for like 10-15 minutes. He had just been to Disneyland for the first time earlier that year and was excited that we would be going this year. And picture or it didn't happen:
15_yRhyno and Phil.jpg

aaaaaand looks like Dustin photobombed us in one shot:

For this update I am going to take a slight detour from the Disneyland Trip planning to cover the Hershey DISMeet for Give Kids The World that I attended this past weekend.

I'm all about detours! ::yes::

Definitely nothing wrong with that.

She's gotten so big!

They better give out those kisses, they make enough of them!

We then went down to the event location for the evening which was one of the conference rooms. Peter wouldn't cooperate for pictures during dinner but I told him I had to get at least one nice one or no more chocolate. So he cooperated:

DS and Peter could be friends. And troublemakers together :thumbsup2

You know they love their job. :goodvibes

Cause I just had to answer some:
Parks - 16) Stitch's Great Escape?
Movies - 2) Parrot
3) Twitterpatted! That one was super easy for me
8) "10,000 years will give you such a crick in the neck!"
17) Yearth??

Perfectly placed sticker :thumbsup2

We did put some tickets in the raffle for this night and actually wound up winning the item we most wanted which was a bunch of summer Disney beverage/kitchen stuff: Waterbottle, reusable ice cubes, and ice pop trays:

11_olivia-with-friday-winning-jpg.106658

Awesome win!

I would have totally placed all my money here for sure.

These are too cool! Love the Anger and Nemo one!

Isaac's Deli

This place is delicious! They have good pretzel bread :hyper:

I know someone famous!!! :hyper:

Part 13 - Hershey DISmeet for GKTW (Part 3)

Oh, though some of you would enjoy this. A guy who is raising money gave a quick talk - the way he is going to raise many is by riding It's a Small World continuously for every $100 he raises. He is up to $1,100 so far - meaning 11 hours in a row on the ride. Impressive! Hope he survives! ;)

16_IASW guy.JPG

Oh, and we had to get a proper picture with Leah:
17_Leah and Judi.JPG

So we didn't win any of the raffles this day, but we did win one of the auctions - this one for coffee. So I came with a basket of beer and left with a basket of coffee ... but again, it's all for the kids

18_Saturdays winning.JPG

Also came with these cool mints:
18_zmints.jpg

We then headed out and back to Judi's parent's place. Judi had an additional activity this evening as she was attending "The Princess Bride: An Inconceivable Evening with Cary Elwes" ... which was a showing of the movie along with talk and Q&E with Cary Elwes who has a new book out about being on the set during filming of the movie
11707512_10153914844943238_1256457334864902776_n.jpg

She also got a signed book at the event and basically said it was epic (and see, I told you that gif from Part 1 of this update would fit in ;) )

The next day we had Judi's sister's baby boy's Christening (Judi was the Godmother) and then we headed home but couldn't not stop at least at Chocolate World - to ride the free ride they have there (which is kinda like Figment but about making chocolate) and buy some chocolate since, you know we didn't have enough this weekend ;)

20_Chocolate World.jpg

Overall it was a really fun weekend (though tiring, didn't get home until 9:30 Sunday evening and I had a 7am call the next day at work) and is always fun to be with other people inside the Disney bubble and if possible I am even more excited about getting to Disneyland!

What a cool update!! I didn't know about these DISmeets. How fun and what a great way to meet people from the boards! Looks like you all got some cool loot!

I am extremely jealous of Judi's princess bride evening--in-con-ceivable!! So AWESOME! You'll see some princess bride in my PTR sometime before our trip. I'm going to have to look for this book now.

P.S. The kids all look so big! (And ADORABLE!) Where's the tiny baby who took a bath in the sink in your last TR?

I separated your updates with my comments. My bad!

Oh, though some of you would enjoy this. A guy who is raising money gave a quick talk - the way he is going to raise many is by riding It's a Small World continuously for every $100 he raises. He is up to $1,100 so far - meaning 11 hours in a row on the ride. Impressive! Hope he survives! ;)

Whoa! :scared1::scared: I couldn't do it. Wonder if he'll be documenting this :scratchin

I love the Kiss/Mickey Ear logo!

That is a nice carafe. Ah, good ole Intercourse, PA.:thumbsup2

I've never seen these before! Have you ever seen them in the parks? I want.

"The Princess Bride: An Inconceivable Evening with Cary Elwes" ... which was a showing of the movie along with talk and Q&E with Cary Elwes who has a new book out about being on the set during filming of the movie

What?! That is so awesome!

Excuse me for one second.

sully faint.gif

I love this place. Mainly because I know it's LOADED with chocolate. I also think the ride is kinda fun too :teeth:

Looks like a great weekend! How nice that it's so close to Judi's family, too.

I can't believe how much bigger/older the kids are since your last TR - especially Emma! They are all way too cute.

I like how your bill came with a bunch of Hershey's kisses - nice touch!

For those of you not familiar with Hershey, Pennsylvania - it's a town in central PA and is where Hershey Chocolate is headquartered and the home to the Hershey Park themepark. It is an interesting town as it is all built up around the factory and the park ... so basically the whole town smells like chocolate and you can't go 5 feet without someone throwing chocolate at you
So... another win-win. :thumbsup2

When the bill comes they provide a bunch of Hershey kisses:
Interesting concept. Almost makes you look forward to receiving your bill!

That is some tricky trivia. It would b fun to play along, but I'd feel pretty dumb by the time I finished. :rotfl2:

We did put some tickets in the raffle for this night and actually wound up winning the item we most wanted which was a bunch of summer Disney beverage/kitchen stuff: Waterbottle, reusable ice cubes, and ice pop trays:
Now if only there was a kitchen to put it in...

After the podcast finished I did want to introduce myself to Rhyno who is the newest member of the team and just let him know I find him quite funny on the podcasts and we wound up talking for like 10-15 minutes.
Cool! I'm glad you had a chance to see the podcast and get some time to chat. And talking Disneyland is always fun.

Oh, though some of you would enjoy this. A guy who is raising money gave a quick talk - the way he is going to raise many is by riding It's a Small World continuously for every $100 he raises. He is up to $1,100 so far - meaning 11 hours in a row on the ride. Impressive! Hope he survives! ;)
 So does he get the straight jacket before, or after he rides?

you know we didn't have enough this weekend ;)
You can never have too much chocolate.

Looks like a good time!

Joining in! Also planning a trip in the fall to DL and your PTR is full of some great information. Our family is well versed in WDW however DLR is a whole other story and I find that I am also feeling a bit overwhelmed. Have a lot of researching ahead so truly appreciate the ability to follow along - thanks for sharing!!

The photos from the DIS meet are wonderful - your children are so cute!

That looks like a lot of fun and nice to be around people who get DIS life, too! And for a great cause!

Wow, I can't believe how big Emma is getting! What a cutie! And I think she already has as much hair as Izzy does now! :rotfl:

Very cool to hear about your DISmeet/mini vacation! Sounds like a great time! I didn't watch the whole podcast, but went to your clip - good thoughts on how we can make Disney more magical for others. :thumbsup2

Yay Dismeet updates!

Oh my goodness Emma is so big. In her last TR she was just a tiny little thing and now she's all grown.

Someday I need to go there so I can get Hersey kisses with my meal.

I'd do much better on the movie trivia than the parks trivia. Like it's a parrot for 2, 4 is 10 ('for ten years we've been rusting needing so much more than dusting'), 5 is flit, 9 Feed the Birds from Mary Poppins (thanks Saving Mr. Banks), 11 the Bimbettes, 18 Lady Tramine, 19 Incredaboy. But we always watch all our Disney movies before we go on trips so I've probably watched them too many times that I should have all of them.

"I love babies - I don't want any more of my own but I love looking at you!"
oh Julie.

Ooh those are such cool things to win!

Aww that little girl who wanted Olivia to be around. I'm sure she still had a good time though.

Wow $80 is a great amount of money to raise from your basket!

The glasses are amazing, I'd have bought some as well.

I need to watch the podcast, I'm going to do that as soon as I'm caught up here. I heard it'll probably make me cry though so I've been holding off a little.

Dustin photobombing you cracks me up.

Oh goodness, dude, I hope that guy survives too. He's brave.

Sounds like you had a great time at the meet, but then that's about what I thought would happen.

That showing of the Princess Bride with Cary Elwes sounds amazing!

Very fun meet and weekend in Hershey. It's about 2 hours from us and we've been to Hershey Park a few times. There is a distinct chocolate smell in the air!

A DIS meet to talk about Disney and for a good cause - total win for the weekend!

Wow, that was a great write up on the Hershey DISMeet! We've never done something like that before, but sounds like a blast and I want to go.

Funny, my wife was watching the DisUnplugged podcast yesterday (we are still getting caught up from our vacation.) I walked into the kitchen, having no idea what she was doing, and glanced over at her laptop.... and said, "hey, that guy looks like Phil. Wait, that IS Phil..." and then we chuckled about what the odds were that I'd come into the kitchen just at that moment...

Anyway, first time to chime in after returning from our vacation. You are going to love the Diamond Celebration. It was even cooler than I expected, and I had high hopes :hippie:

Sounds like such a nice weekend (and even better that Judi's family is nearby so you were able to spend a little time w/o kids). I can't believe how big the kids have gotten, even Olivia looks like she has grown up so much since we met you guys.

Phil, I always enjoy these inclusions in your TR or PTR, and it sounds as if it was yet again another successful event for Give Kids the World. I already mentioned it on FB, but I do love those glasses you got (especially Judy's "Mine Mine" glass).

I'm glad you got to hook up with some freinds you met at the previous event. Love those DIS meets.

Oh, and you can NEVER have too much chocolate.

I very rarely post on here, mostly lurk, but some of your trip reports have helped me with planning of my own Disney stuff so I figured I'd chime in with some San Diego advice. :)

Snooze is amazing for breakfast or brunch. Definitely eat there for sure. I don't have a lot of experience with the restaurants up near LaJolla but if you are downtown at all also check out The Broken Yolk for breakfast or brunch and there is an AMAZING pizza place in Seaport Village called Assagios. (you can also sit outside with an awesome view of the harbor)

I am a native Floridian temporarily transplanted to San Diego and I'm going to say that FL's SeaWorld is better. Way better. We've been to this one twice and won't be going again while we are here.

The Zoo itself is awesome and the Safari Park is neat with the caveat that almost all of the "experiences" cost a lot in addition to your base ticket. Between the two I would choose the actual zoo hands down any day. (If you are going to go to either I have noticed that the animals are way more active after 1PM)

If you are staying up in LaJolla also look into checking out LaJolla cove and Seal Beach. Sea Lions will be at the top of the hill (you can smell them from a mile away) and the Harbor Seals will be in the Childrens Pool down the road a little at the other end of the park. You can go down on the beach with the Sea Lions and the views are spectacular. There is also a cute little area to wander around with shops and restaurants (try out The Living Room, really good food).

I don't know if I was any help but I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents. If you have any specific questions about the area let me know. :)

What a cool update!! I didn't know about these DISmeets. How fun and what a great way to meet people from the boards! Looks like you all got some cool loot!

The DISmeet is definitely fun and glad they now have one where it is convenient for me to get to. Not everyone there is active on the Boards (some people watch the podcasts and don't go on the boards or don't do either) but definitely nice to talk to people who "get" Disney

I know, Emma really has gotten big. She's got 3 teeth now and has taken a few steps ... definitely growing up.

I separated your updates with my comments. My bad!

I love this place. Mainly because I know it's LOADED with chocolate. I also think the ride is kinda fun too :teeth:

The logo was new this year ... I actually had made one for last year that used Reces Peanut Butter cups as the "ears" but this one looks a lot better/slicker than the one I ddi.

I hadn't seen those mints before but thought they were pretty cool

haha, Judi' loved your reaction!

The ride is cool too - though I had never seen a line as long as what we had that day. The entire queue was full and the line extended back about 30 feet into the store! One thing that was good was we had time to read all the info they have on the walls in the queue and the line did go fast so wasn't too bad.

Looks like a great weekend! How nice that it's so close to Judi's family, too.

I can't believe how much bigger/older the kids are since your last TR - especially Emma! They are all way too cute.

I like how your bill came with a bunch of Hershey's kisses - nice touch!

Definitely works out location wise and this way we didn't even have to stay in a hotel or anything

Kids are definitely getting big. Olivia just finished Kindergarten and Peter finished his first year of pre-school and Emma turns 1 in about 2 weeks!

If you stay at the hotel they give you a full size chocolate bar for each person in the room at check-in and then leave kisses on the pillow every night ... it's like you can't walk 5 feet without someone giving you chocolate.

So... another win-win. :thumbsup2

Interesting concept. Almost makes you look forward to receiving your bill!
That is some tricky trivia. It would b fun to play along, but I'd feel pretty dumb by the time I finished. :rotfl2:

Now if only there was a kitchen to put it in...

 So does he get the straight jacket before, or after he rides?

You can never have too much chocolate.

Looks like a good time!

Definitely makes the bill a little easier to take ... plus gives the kids something to do while waiting to pay the bill.

I felt better that almost everyone was having trouble with the quiz. I know for the parks one I got 10 right and only a couple people got more than 15 ... so definitely more they were hard questions than I was dumb :rotfl:

yeah, be cool to be fancy people who have a kitchen .... we are getting there, have 1/2 the floor in and about 1/2 the cabinets (have to do it in stages as the fridge is too big to get out of the room).

I think it is just cool to see the podcast in action and all the cameras and computers they use, etc. and they all seem pretty down to earth to talk to ... despite some thoughts that they should have handlers and you can schedule FP+ to meet them :rotfl2:

:welcome:!!! Thanks for joining! Glad to see this report might be of help to others. It is amazing how DLR seems very similar yet totally different at the same time. Hopefully it all works out.

Thank you!

That looks like a lot of fun and nice to be around people who get DIS life, too! And for a great cause!

Fully agree - I mean, not really any downside ... other than me thinking "it's for the kids!" and being willing to spend more money than I normally would

:thumbsup2

Thank you! She's had kinda the same length hair for a while now ... definitely getting big - she turns 1 on the 21st of this month!

Thank you - I just think it is neat how (most) guest can be so friendly with other guests and just make it feel even more like not just another amusement park.

Yay Dismeet updates!

Sounds like you had a great time at the meet, but then that's about what I thought would happen.

That showing of the Princess Bride with Cary Elwes sounds amazing!

I know - Emma's like a real little person now! Definitely has a big personality too

You definitely would have done better than I with the movie trivia. I knew I would be bad at that one but thought I would do better with the parks ones. Oh well, at least a lot of people were struggling so it definitely was more the questions were hard than I was dumb :rotfl2:

There were definitely more kids this year than last (Corey and Julie had their kids there as well).

Definitely some tears with the Podcast ... Pete was pretty choked up by the end

So funny that until I was prepping the update I had no idea that Dustin had photobombed us. Definitely a keeper

Definitely a good time at the meet. Glad we get to go and hope they do it again next year. Would be fun to go to a different one some year as well to explore another city. The Nova Scotia one sounds fun.

Judi said the Princess Bride event was really fun!

Very fun meet and weekend in Hershey. It's about 2 hours from us and we've been to Hershey Park a few times. There is a distinct chocolate smell in the air!

A DIS meet to talk about Disney and for a good cause - total win for the weekend!

It's definitely a unique town, but I really like it. Some good restaurants too ... plus Troeg's Brewery!

Definitely think it is cool that we can have such a good time and raise money for a good cause. Over the past 2 years the Hershey meet has raised enough money to send 3 families to the GKTW village.

Wow, that was a great write up on the Hershey DISMeet! We've never done something like that before, but sounds like a blast and I want to go.

I think you would enjoy a Meet as you I am sure a ton of people would want to talk with you not just about the parks but of Walt's history which I know you know a lot about (and have visited!)

That is really funny that you walked in right at that point! Glad to see I successfully came off as myself on camera :rotfl:

So glad to hear that about the Diamond Celebration stuff! Can't wait to read all about your trip!
