We are set to head down to Disney next month with our five year old, it's a surprise trip for him. I just had that scary conversation, you know the one we are all dreading about the characters, and it turned out okay. All I had to do was turn his questions back to him, and this is how it went, no lying required and I might just get to have our last magical trip in August:

Son: Mom, why is there more than one Mickey?
Me: (panic inside) Why do you think there is more than one Mickey?
Son: I think there is more than one Mickey because lots of people want to see Mickey.
Me: yeah, that must be why
Son: Mom, do you think the Mickeys are just people in costumes?
Me: (heart kind of sinking) Hmm...what do you think?
Son: I think there is one REAL Mickey, and then all the rest are people in costumes.
Me: I think you're onto something! And you never know which one you are meeting.
Son: yeah!

So it turned out okay! And I loved his reasoning!

Happy Disneying everyone!

That's too cute! :)

Cute. Don't freak too much however if it comes out this trip. Neither of my boys ever believed the characters were real...ever....and we have done almost every character meal, most meet and greets and they both love love WDW and the characters and every trip has been magical.

My kids have never believed the characters are real, either. But that did not stop them from LOVING every second of every character greet. And begging for more. Our next trip, they've already given me a list of who they must meet.

My heart sank a bit when DD3(8) noticed that Pooh had a zipper on his costume last time we went when she was 6, but it was sort of refreshing to have it all out in the open too. I did have to tell her to not say it too loud because some kids don't know that it is a person in a costume.

That's just fantastic! So glad you go through that!

We live in Manhattan, and in Times Square there are these ridiculously GROSS and CREEPY people who don't speak English, dressed in characters- and there are a lot of Mickey's and Minnies. They run up to you and touch you and try to get you to take a picture- and then demand money. Did I mention their costumes are disgusting? EW.

Anyway, I used to go into a panic every time we went to Times Square, because you cannot avoid them no matter what. So I just told her straight up- not to touch or get near them, they are PEOPLE dressed up like Mickey, Minnie, Elmo, Batman, etc.... just like Halloween.
I told her the REAL Mickey (and friends) live at Disney World. And that's that.

She fully accepted it, and now points them out and says "mommy, those are not the REAL characters...".

I love my girl!!

LOL, except for in my half-cut-off pic in my post. That REAL Goofy and Pluto was a special appearance with the REAL Merida- she was spot on and gorgeous. Disney put this on in Times Square, when my DD was 1.5.
Limited Time Magic!!
:)

Thanks. I actually find it really weird that he believes they are real because I never believed in anything like characters or Santa. I always knew what they were. I just find it so much fun to see the twinkle in his eyes when he talks about them. You should see this kid talk about meeting Clifford when he came to school. I'm glad I will get to see it one more time in a few weeks, and also very glad to hear that he'll still love them afterwards too. Thanks!

It's so difficult. Our son's first trip was at 3 1/2. He instantly told me "those are just people dressed up." It was sad, but that didn't stop him from loving (& continuing to love) every minute of character interaction. He's 10 1/2 now and still enjoys meeting characters. He has never ruined it for our daughter (2). He helps make the experience more special.
