My family just got a new travel trailer, a Salem by Forest River. The mattress in the bunk is way to thin for my bad back and neck. We leave in three weeks for the Fort for our first trip. Should I get a air mattress or
memory foam? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

We have a Sandpiper 5th wheel made by Forrest River, the mattresses' for the bunks are also thin. We bought a 4 inch thick mattress topper from Walmart and cut it to fit on top of the mattresses'. It made a big difference. I don't understand why they come with such a thin mattress? The foam topper is thicker than the mattresses that came with the camper. I planned on getting mattresses made to fit the bunks once these get wore down.

Memory foam as thick and dense as you can afford. Absolutely.

Really, I don't understand how the RV industry can find the most awful barely padded 'boards' that pass for mattresses! :confused3

We usually upgrade if we have the chance, then trade out mattresses when we buy a new RV. Several years ago we decided to have one custom made (can't get short queens in store) and have used it so far in three different mh's - also added a thick memory foam pad for good measure. It is very comfortable - almost more so than the Temperpedic that we have at home!

Sounds like the general consensus is at the least to add a good memory foam topper!

North of the mouse, we have a tempurpedic at home and love it. We bought the new to us RV and our second purchase was a tempurpedic topper for the rv bed. It was expensive but worth it.

I pulled my queen out and replaced. (still need to install end of bed ft rest) Then the bunks in the process of having a some made. I understand they are about the same cost as buy from costco. One the challenges I am running into is that the bunks flip up... Not sure about width.

We had a very uncomfortable mattress on our bed. Even with the memory foam topper it was marginal. My wife found a true memory foam short queen for our bed on Amazon. It's awesome. Now in my daughter's bunk she just had a 2 inch topper with the 3 or 4 inch I think fill mattress pad. So I gutted the fiber fill by cutting the 6 or so threads that held the fill in place. Cut down our old topper from our bed. Now she had a 6 inch thick mattress. She said it was much more comfortable than before.

As for the size, her bunk is 28 or 30 wide and 74 or 76 long. I know the topper is 60 by 80. I cut the topper in 2 and took 6 inches off the length. Then I used some duct tape to hold the mattress halves in place. Next stuff them into the shells that had the filler in them. It worked like a charm. However her bunk is a flip up style. Since the thickness is more than before, my wife or I just pull the mattress out and lay it on the sofa or dinette. Which ever is easier at the time.

I bought a 4 inch foam topper at overstock.com and cut to fit. The difference is amazing and much less expensive than buying a new mattress. I only put a 2 inch topper on the bunks because the kids don't mind as much. I bought a California king topper and it covered 3 bunks.

We full time in our 5th wheel and I have a bad back so a good mattress is a must for us. We tried the air mattress route and after a few weeks our 18" $130 one started leaking. Didn't take long for it to be unusable. Right now we have a regular queen mattress on it since ours is a full size instead of a short and that has been wonderful. Go with the topper, our experience has been that the air mattress was a waste of money.

We have a Salem Travel Trailer and have memory foam mattress toppers on all of the mattresses and extras for the dinette and couch should we have guests. They are all very comfy. If you have a bunk that swings up and latches near the ceiling you will have to make sure you don't have anything too thick or it won't latch.

We recently had a whole house remodel and lived in the camper for two months. DH and I do have a three inch foam topper for our mattress. When the house was still no where near being finished and winter started to really set in, we were able to rent a basement apartment from a friend. All of our things were still in storage. (One of those pack your pod and they take it away to a warehouse things.)
Well...we ended up using those camper mattresses on the floor for another FOUR months!:scared1:
I couldn't WAIT to get back to our Tempurpedic after all was said and done.

Thanks for all the advise. I ordered 2 mattresses from Walmart. They arrived today and they look like they'll do the job. Two weeks till we leave for the Fort.
