What would you have done?

......so right, no flash photography, no cell phones, no talking, no texting, no bright lights....which is why i don't attend very many movies.

I guess I have very different ride expectations compared to some of you. I don't think it's bad manners to talk, particularly about the park or the ride. I mean, it's a log flume. You get wet. But no talking? I don't think the people who are talking on conversational level are the one who are out of line in this one.

I have found that ride etiquette is largely missing on POTC. People talking more than the occasional whisper, video taping such that the bright screen is in my field of vision for most of the ride, and flash photography have diminished my enjoyment of it the last few times. I don't think it was rude at all to say something.

I wouldn't have said a word. It's not a library and people are allowed to talk. If they were bothering your daughter, I guess she was allowed to say something, but I think people need to get over this idea of having complete silence during rides. They're rides. At an amusement park, not the library at Alexandria.
Shouting and swearing is different than what the OP reported. She reported they were talking and annoying them. People have the right to talk. Pirates of the Caribbean is not some sacred space that requires hallowed silence. It is a ride at an amusement park. If you need silence to enjoy a ride, I don't know what to say. It's unreasonable.

It is a THEME park, not an amusement park. The music and dialogue are integral parts of the show. If someone is talking loudly enough for you to hear what they are saying, it is too loud and disrespectful.

No one has said complete silence or hallowed silence, but talking quietly enough that it doesn't disturb others.

POTC is not a movie theater...

It isn't a movie theater, but it is a theater, that is the whole point. It is a theater where the guests move through it and the actors are the audio-animatronic figures. Walt wanted it to be a theatrical performance, but one where the actors were always the same (consistent). It was why A-A was invented.

I don't think she was wrong to say anything. I wouldn't have, but I probably would have let it bother me quietly and ultimately ruin my ride experience. Which is worse? You also take the chance they're jerks and just talk louder and more obnoxiously. Pirates is a long ride to be sitting next to annoying people.

Now if this happens to me on my next visit, I'll close my eyes and envision my cubicle. I think I'd be able to block them out after remembering where I could be instead.

POTC is not a movie theater...
You are right! It is not a movie theater, but it does have things happening and there are songs and dialogs and it is nice to be able to hear what is happening. Especially if it is someone in your boats first time being on this ride. It is just common courtesy like the pp poster said.

for me it depends on how loud they were talking. I think its ok to speak to your party on a ride, but not so loud it distracts from the enjoyment of those around them. I like to be able to hear the sounds and talking on the ride. If I can't hear "we want's the redhead, and "don't tell them Carlos, don't be cheecken" and other talking from the animatronics on the ride, then it is disruptive. That said, I never have the nerve to ask others to be quiet, but I have told the CMs at the end of the ride that I had super obnoxious riders with me on the ride, or ones that took flash photos the whole ride, (one time they kept turning around and taking flask pictures right in my face), and they have let us ride again without waiting in line again, if the line is long. People can enjoy the ride without being so obnoxious they ruin the experience for those around them. That is just rude. Now if it's a scary ride, and they are screaming, that's just their reaction, and perfectly acceptable. Anyone who says its ok to be loud on Pirates is probably people who do it.

I am a wuss, I wouldn't have said anything. People are going to annoy me, that's life. But if there's anywhere I can ignore it, it's Disneyland! And most people seem to get a little snotty when you try to control their actions, whether they're being polite or otherwise...

Like I said, people's opinions differ. For me, it's not a problem as long as it's not obnoxiously loud or obscene behavior. She wasn't wrong for saying anything, and I wouldn't have a problem if she did, but for me it wouldn't bother me. That's all I'm saying.

Theme park, amusement park. Still a ride where you get water splashed on you for fun so the idea of getting bent over people talking on it is silly and makes the people concerned about it seem pretty up tight and stuffy. You don't get to control people having a normal conversation anyplace where "silence, please" isn't requested (and it always is before a movie, FYI). I'm pretty easily annoyed ;) so I might have been annoyed by them talking, but they have the right to have a conversation. I also wouldn't have shut up if someone asked me to if I was conversing in normal tones. In fact, I DID talk to dh during the ride because I got a LOT more wet than I expected and I was kind of grossed out because it got on my face.

Talking is fine, but I suspect the decibel level of their talking is what bothered the OP. If you're talking quietly or even at a normal tone of voice, you're probably not going to disturb anyone on POTC.

That's why we have been getting into the habit of asking to be in the first couple of rows(large family). It doesn't help with a talker, but it cuts down on my biggest pet peeve...camera/iPad/video screens.

Talking during the ride takes away from my immersion in the ride... people in front of me, we're talking about their latest break up, and things completely unrelated to the ride, it was distracting, and I have the RIGHT to enjoy my one trip to DLR that year, without hearing about their sorted life... I pay hard earned money for that experience. People should use "library voices" if they talk at all......
Catch up on break ups, at lunch!

My 2 cents.

if someone can follow your conversation, then it's too loud and inappropriate for a show or ride. some people have come a very long way to enjoy that show or ride. it might be the only chance they get too. just because you don't want to enjoy it and would rather discuss the finer points of your latest medical issues or how miserable your work life is, doesn't make it ok to ruin it for the people around you. small children need to be reminded that others around them exist and manners are a thing, grown adults should not require this.

I think your daughter had every right to ask them to be quiet so that you could enjoy the attraction. Sometimes people forget their surroundings and carry on. It's rude to go on attraction and talk loudly enough to be distracting.

I wouldn't shush a stranger on a ride or in a theater. We have been in plenty of situations where someone is behaving rudely, but it isn't my job to police it.

My family wouldn't stop talking on POTC and I kept thinking, I hope nobody on the disboards is in front of us. They will be talking about that rude family from Vegas. But, to be fair, they were talking about the ride!

Which it doesn't sound like that was the case here... They didn't appear to be shouting or swearing from what I read, they were just talking, which is 100% allowed. They can talk about their day at the park, their plans for getting home or their weekend shopping trip. As long as they are not yelling, shouting, being overly obnoxious or swearing, they're not in any kind of fault. But that' just my opinion. One person is disturbed by one thing while someone else isn't. It's all a matter of opinion

If they want to sit and gossip there are plenty of places to do that that are not on a ride with other passengers, this is a ride, not the monorail or coffee shop. Other guests have every right to expect others to be able to hear the sounds of the rides etc without a constant backtrack of someone blabbing on.

Constant talking vs pointing out with glee the pig with fly leg and drunk huddle together.....or pointing out the hidden mickeys on the armor.... the attractions draws out those moments of merriment .
