The Poly Pool Gate Debate

I live in a secure building in a smallish city. I never let anyone in, not even if they are dressed like delivery people. I smile, apologize, and say "building regulations forbid me from letting you in, I am so sorry but you will have to be buzzed up." I feel bad when I say it, but I would feel worse if I let a burglar or worse into the building!

Not quite sure how I would handle this particular situation. I did let some girls into the Disneyland Hotel Monorail pool as I was leaving on Saturday night, but it was 6pm and there was plenty of room. Plus, I don't think DLR has the pool-hopping issues that WDW has.

This actually reminds me of our schools. We always have to be buzzed in by someone in the office. When they first put this added security into place I have to admit that it did feel weird to close the door quickly behind me if there was another parent approaching the door. It took some getting used to. But, I've never seen anyone hold the door open for anyone at the schools. Everyone totally understand the "rudeness" as it protects our kids.

We are driving home from the Poly as I type. Pool hoppers caught my attention twice and I was not looking for them. Once was a lady yelling at her husband as she didn't like her options for getting back to their room at the Contemporary. The other time was a group of teens debating if they were going to stay for lunch before they "hopped to the next pool" or get lunch at the next stop.

Are you reading this, Poly management?

You know, it may be that we don't know how many people actually do this, but....there certainly are many instances like this one, where people are overheard pool hopping. Thanks for the example.

I have to say...this has to be my favorite thread on the DIS ever. Something about adherence to rules (closing the gate) VS politeness (holding the gate open for those behind you). I'm sure these were BOTH things we were all taught as kids. And, in this case, it seems like they can not exist simultaneously. Very interesting.

Anyway, I noticed that a lot of people seem to be suggesting this: If someone is waiting at the gate to enter after you, simply allow them to go through first. You'll be able to tell fairly quickly if they have a legitimate Poly magic band.

It made me imagine what would happen if two folks from this thread happened to meet up at the Poly gate. I imagine it going something like this:

:chat:
"Please, after you."
"No, after you."
"Really, feel free...go ahead of us."
"No, no it would really make me happy if you went first."
"Here, let me hold your things while you get your magic bands."
"No, no...I must insist...after you."
"It would make my day just magical if I could let you get a lounge chair before me."
"Well, my day would just be filled with pixie dust if you could dip your toe in the water first."
"So, tell me: what building are your staying in here at the Poly?"
"I was just going to ask you the same thing."
:chat:

And, on and on and on.....

Passive-aggressive-DIS-thread-knowledge-overload. :rotfl:
Love this! Too funny!

From what I've read on the Poly thread, the gate does not always work. So....as much as we would like to think that only pool hoppers are waiting at the gate....it seems legitimate Poly people's MB's do not always work. We may be the ones waiting at the gate!

One of th days we were spending at the pool the gates were not working (this, however was not the day I overheard all of the pool hoppers). They were opening for very few people. Only my 6-year-old's band worked. The gates were standing open most of the day.

Tikiman posted photos on his Facebook page this morning. They show a CM scanning MBs and handing out bracelets at the gate. Maybe it's because this is a holiday weekend, but I wouldn't mind if this became permanent.

It should become permanent.

Always a special effort of the 4th of July as the PR is overrun by the public which includes taking the chairs from first floor patios

We have this problem at our community pool. People leave the gate open because they don't want to pay the deposit for a key, or they are from another neighborhood.
I have gone and seen the pool gate propped open me I will pull it closed loudly. When someone asks me to open it, I tell them it is a safety hazard to leave it open.
I would do the same at the Poly.. I hope they keep this up like SAB.. It's so much easier to find a chair since they cracked down on resort hoppers
