Oceaneer Club/Lab - why soap, not sanitizer?

I found it a bit of an annoyance that they squirted soap into the kids hands upon entrance then made them go to the bathroom to wash hands. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for cleanliness, but why not sanitizer? We had to have them scan our card and go with our oldest son (who has special needs) to the family bathroom several times in the beginning so that we could be sure he got to where he needed to go and actually washed off the soap (they asked us to go with him).

And I'm 99% sure my 4yo was so excited he just wiped the soap on his pants a few times and went to play, lol.

What ship were you on?

On the Magic they have these awesome hand washers that the kids put their hands in for 20 seconds and get blasted with soap and water from all directions, kind of like a hand dryer. I want one of these in my house! They made my kids excited about hand washing, lol.

They are not loud, either.

On the Fantasy, in Oceaneer's

I was on the Wonder --- when we checked our son in to the Oceaneer Club, the counselor put a few pumps of cleanser in our sons hands and told him to go in. The counselor didn't say anything else after that. Our son is 9 yo and is very accustomed to sanitizing.
All of us, including our son, thought it was sanitizer but when we saw him rub his hands together, the liquid became sticky & white, so I asked the counselor if that was soap --- he said yes, it was soap & that he had to go rinse his hands in the sink. I thought we were the only ones that thought it was odd that the counselor didn't mention it was soap!

PrincessShmoo, yes, that is the amazing hand washing machine. They must have added them after the reimagination of the Magic. I bet they will be on the Wonder after her dry dock.

Id much rather wash my hands then use sanitizer. I can't stand that stuff. My son doesn't typically use sanitizer either because it seems to be so much more drying then soap and he has pretty bad eczema. I also want one of those hand washing machines for my house.

Look at it this way---if the kid has chocolate or snot on his hands, washing will get it off. Sanitizer doesn't get the nasty crud off your hands.

YES! It actually *cleans* the hands. Doesn't just kill the weakest germs (leaving the strongest as the only ones there).

Dream has the hand washing machine as well. I'm SO glad they don't use sanitizer and instead have them wash their hands.

Soap and water is better any day over hand sanitizer. Sanitizer doesn't do much and is not effective against norovirus.

We try to avoid sanitizer, soap is always better and leaves a lot less residue! And who knows what type they use, some have alcohol, others are very drying to the skin, others overly scented...

Hand sanitizer kills all the germs, even the good ones on your hands. So then you touch something a minute later and now your hands are full of bad germs and you have no good ones to fight the bad ones!

I rarely ever use hand sanitizer. Soap and water is best.

With all the unlimited frozen yogurt, they probably don't want kids with sticky hands touching all the surfaces of the club!

Don't get me wrong, we use soap and water at home and most other times (unless we're out and can't get to a sink). I just found it interesting. With as chaotic as drop off/pick up is, I thought they'd go for convenience. I mean, they hand everyone a sanitizer wipe when entering any restaurant.

Love those hand washers, we tried them on the Dream during open house.....just remember to take off your watch first, lol.

I work in a hospital, and while we have to "gel" in and "gel" out ( use the sanitizer gel when we enter a Patient room, and again when we leave ) we still have to wash our hands every time we touch anything in the room. Even if all I did was open a cupboard to get a blanket or such. I don't want to scare anyone, but you would be surprised how many microbes hand sanitizer doesn't work on.

While I hope a lot of those are not present on a cruise ship, another poster brought up a good point. Alcohol ( the main sanitizing ingredient in sanitizer ) is not effective against Norovirus. I know it's a headache! :headache:

"you would be surprised how many microbes hand sanitizer doesn't work on"

Working in EMS and teaching Paramedics we like to say that the sanitizer does a good job of scaring the microbes and pushing them around so they hide somewhere else on your hands/arms, but if you truly want to clean and ensure you don't take it home good ol' fashioned soap and water is the way to go
