Any suggestions for getting Geotagging using a Canon SX40?

Eyefi memory used to do it but doesn't appear available any more.

Is there any other product out there that can do this?

thanks....

I was just reading an article about that...
I haven't tried them yet, but apparently there are some apps that you can run on your smart phone. The clock needs to be synched with your camera clock. Then when you upload to the computer, it merges the geo tags with the photos:

The apps I saw suggested are called geotag photos pro and LrBuddy (for lightroom).

I'm going to try LrBuddy.

I was using a regular geotagger for our trip through Australia last year that pretty much recorded the whole trip. Since the clocks were synched (geotagger and camera) it was fairly easy to look at the timestamps and take the GPS data over to LR.

The reason I opted for the geotagger instead of a phone app was longer battery power and better GPS reception. Of course if you are in civilization, neither of that will be as much as issue as if you are trekking through No man's land....

Looking at Amazon, all I see are stand-alone Geotaggers for Nikon... am I missing something? Are there other brands?

Thanks...

If you are looking at a standalone geotagger, you don't need to look for one specifically for cameras. Any geotagger that can export GPX files will do. We bought a used Garmin for our trip to OZ. Once we got home, we exported the GPX file (it was also really neat to see our complete route through the Australian continent) and then imported it to LR. LR automatically assigned the coordinates to the photos with the same timestamp. Basically you have this additional device in your pocket that records your every step throughout the day and you merge the two data later on.

Canon does sell a GPS modul for their EOS line. But that one is rather pricey and I am not sure it is compatible with the SX line.

I checked the Garmin site and didn't see any stand-alone taggers. Have a model I could look up?

I like the idea of using the phone as the tagger but fear it will tear through my battery in no time.

Thanks

We bought a used Garmin Colorado 300. My DH also uses that for geocaching and hiking so we decided to go for something with a screen. If you just want something to collect data, the Garmin Forerunner 405 offers GPS data collection in addition to its fitness features. My brother bought it to train for a marathon and map his routes. It exports GPX files and works just fine with LR.

Basically any device that is able to record your tracks and export to GPX can be used. I am pretty sure a lot of the never running devices that offer route tracking and storage would also work - as long as you can output to GPX. This reminds me that a frind of mine has some sort of emergency GPS tracker. Once you turn it on, it records your track and people can check where you are online in realtime. It also comes with two emergency buttons you can use to call for help. For the life of me I cannot remember what it's called but it was quite cheap. We were looking into getting it for DH but they didn't have maps for Germany so map tracking on their website was just dots on a white page.... The website allows you to export your route as GPX though. She told me it's a pretty well-known device in the States so maybe someone else would now?

Many (most?) of the geotagging photo accessories have been discontinued and are no longer supported. For the SX40, it looks like you have two choices: an external GPS datalogger (phone app or physical device) that tracks you constantly, or pick up a camera with built-in GPS.

Both the Nikon S9900 and Sony HX50V offer GPS and the same sort of zoom you're used to with the SX40, but they also fit in your pocket. If you have the budget (about $300), that's the way to do it - FWIW, I very much recommend the Nikon over the Sony.

None of the GPS trackers I had used in the past are available anymore, but they usually run about $120-$150. Or, you can use an app at the expense of your phone's battery.
