Aloha, Happy Birthday and Merry Christmas

That tour sounds amazing.

It really was.

I would love to do that one some day....of course I need to get back there first.

I am sure you will get your chance.

What a great day with breakfast, the tour and all those characters.

It was a great, but very tiring day.

Shame about the beggars being out and about.

That really surprised me and made me very uncomfortable.

Love all the christmas decorations. I wonder if it'll be bigger and better this year too.

This remains to be seen. They did say that it was going to be all Diamond Anniversary all the time this year so I wonder what effect this will have on the Halloween and Holiday seasons.

Day 19

It was Thanksgiving that day and I had every intention to be at the parks for rope drop. Although this was my first Thanksgiving at Disneyland, I had experienced it twice at Walt Disney World and had learned that being in the parks early made all the difference. However, after the long and busy day the previous day, I had some trouble getting going. In the end I made it to the parks shortly after 9:00. This actually turned out to be a blessing. After spending the previous day at Disneyland, that day I returned to California Adventure. When I entered the park, Oswald was already out and had no line so I went to see him. On my way up Buena Vista Street, I also bumped into Pluto. I stopped and said “hi” to him.

It was a pretty hot day and I was thirsty. So before heading any further into the park, I stopped at Fiddler, Fifer, & Practical Cafe and got myself a drink. I decided to go for something that I cannot get at Starbucks back home and had the Iced Passion Tea Lemonade, which hit the spot. Once I had finished this, I got some more Photopass photos.

I next headed over to Hollywood Land. One of the people I work with has a little daughter who loves Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and her favourite character is Pete. Unfortunately it is next to impossible to get something with Pete. I know that there is some Disney Channel stuff in Hollywood Land so I decided to check this out. Unfortunately I was out of luck. I did however bump into Princess Sophia while wandering around and stopped for some photos. I pushed on to see if Sully was out. I was out of luck on this count. However, there was a Photopass photographer in this area and she asked if I wanted some photos with the Monsters University backdrop. I took her up on this offer.

I decided to cut through It's A Bug's Land on my way to Cars Land and spotted Flik out and about. Unfortunately he was just about to go in for a break, but his escort was kind enough to tell me when he would be out again. So I went back to the original plan and headed for Cars Land. I got some more photos with the snow car and the entrance sign and then I headed to the other end. Radiator Springs Racers looked very busy so I passed. Instead I headed over to see Lightning McQueen. While I was waiting, I took some photos. I love the flowers made from car parts.

When I had my photos with Lightning McQueen, it was time to get something to drink again. As I was in the area, I stopped by The Cozy Cone Motel and checked what they had. I ended up with Red's Apple Freeze. This very much reminds me of Le Fou's Brew at the Magic Kingdom. I had a wander around while I enjoyed my drink and then I headed back to It's A Bug's Land. This time round, I was in luck. Flik had just come out again and had a rather short line. I got some photos and then north end that Heimlich's Chew Chew Train was a walk on. It was years ago since I last did this so I figured that I may as well have a go. This is rather cute.

I headed back to Cars Land in the hope that I may catch Mater in his Christmas finery, but I was out of luck. I got some more Photopass photos and then I pushed on to Paradise Pier. I did not really think I would get anywhere near Toy Story Midway Mania, but I figured it would be worth trying. On the way, I noticed that there was a Photopass photographer in the Pavilion at the top of Paradise Pier. There were some people having their photos taken even though there was no character in residence. I figured that I may as well get some photos as I had paid for the Photopass CD anyway. I actually really like how the photo came out.

I then headed down the hill and to my delight; there was only a posed waiting time of 25 minutes for Toy Story Midway Mania. This was too good to pass up. I got in line. For once the waiting time was pretty much spot on, but it was worth it. I think I will need a lot more practice to get a decent score, but I enjoy it and that is the main thing.

I am not quite sure what possessed me, but when I came out of Toy Story Midway Mania, I decided to have a go at Mickey's Fun Wheel. I am not very good with heights and although I am normally OK with big wheels, this freaks me out. Still, with a posted wait of only 5 minutes and the fact that you get a pretty good view of Crystal Cathedral from the top, I decided to give it a go. The actual waiting time was closer to 15 minutes, but that was OK. I did actually cope OK by just focusing on Crystal Cathedral.

When I was done, I decided to push on to see if any characters were out and about just past Mickey’s Fun Wheel. There were not, but they were moving people along, as Viva Navidad was just about to start. I had read about this last year and although the reviews were good through the bank, this was not something that I thought I would enjoy. However, as I was in the right place at the right time, I figured I may as well stay and watch. To my surprise, I actually did really enjoy it. It was bright and colourful with upbeat music. Some characters were also part of this, but they did not take over or affect the overall feel.

Once the parade had finished, I went to check out the surrounding area. There was live entertainment, special food and drink items, crafts, kiosks with themed merchandise and a pavilion for character meet and greets. When I got to the pavilion, Goofy was just finishing his set. In the end I never got to meet him. We were told that we would get to see the Three Caballeros, which was really what I had hoped for. We head a short wait until the Three Caballeros came out, but that did not matter. Even the line seemed festive. People were talking to each other and some of the cast members in the area came over to chat as well. This when I found out that I actually had managed to call this right. Apparently the park was heaving at opening time, but had got progressively quieter during the morning.

Soon it was my time to see the Three Caballeros. This was a great meet and greet. Not only are they quite a rare find, but they also took their time with everybody. I think they may even have been flirting a little with me. Once I was done, I asked the cast member near the entrance of the line who would be out next. He told me that Mickey and Minnie would be out in about 10 minutes. He told me to stand a little way back from the end of the line for the Three Caballeros as that line was still open, but that he would let me know once it was closed and I could be first in line for Mickey and Minnie. This worked a treat and once I had seen Mickey and Minnie, I went to do the Little Mermaid ride with next to no wait before heading out of the park via the Grand Californian exit.

I had arranged to meet Graham in the lobby of the Grand Californian at 14:00. We had a dinner reservation at the Disneyland Hotel at 17:30 and had planned to spend the afternoon resort hopping to check out the Christmas decorations. Although the parks were already decorated before we left for Aulani, the hotels were not. The elves had come out to play at some point while we were in Hawaii. We had of course already seen the Christmas decorations at the Grand Californian while we were waiting for our friends on the Monday, but I was quite keen to get a closer look. Graham was already there when I got there. I spotted an addition to the Christmas line up that had not been there on Monday. A table had appeared near the gingerbread house selling different kinds of gingerbread, stollen, stollen slices and all kinds of hot drinks. I have to say that the hot apple cider with Morgan's Spiced Rum sounded very tempting and I had every intention to come back for some at a later stage, but I never got around to it.

We headed up one level so that we could take some photos of the lobby and the Christmas tree from the balcony. I was reminded once again just how tricky the light is in the Grand Californian. Moving the camera even a tiny bit resulted in very different photos and I ended up deleting more photos than I kept.

Once we had taken our photos, we headed out. I had a look at the themed goodies in the window of Marceline's confectionary. We then moved on to the little Christmas village at Downtown Disney and I did not really rate this. This could have done so much better if the kiosks had sold seasonal treats. Instead they mainly concentrated on pretty standard merchandise including a lot of Frozen stuff. There was also a Ghirardelli kiosk. If they want to go down the Christmas market route, they could learn a lot from Disneyland Paris. I did however like Olaf's ice rink and the Christmas tree. We stopped and watched for a while. Some of the skaters were surprisingly good.

When we were ready to move on, we headed towards the Disneyland Hotel. I had thought that we would head there last as this was where we would have dinner, but Graham wanted to see the sunset from the Paradise Pier Hotel. So we headed to the Disneyland Hotel next. This was for me the jewel in the Christmas crown as far as the hotels went. Different areas had different themed Christmas decor. Outside at the back of the hotel, there were a lot of colourful lights in the flowerbeds and flowerpots. Even during the day this looked stunning. The Fantasy tower had the biggest variety of Christmas decorations. They were somewhat on the non-traditional side, but I still really liked them. The Christmas trees were white with decorations in bright jewel colours. The "Gingerbread house" at the Disneyland Hotel was fiberglass, but it still looked nice. They also had an elaborate area where people could meet Santa. Santa was not in residence at that time, but I still loved the area.

We then headed outside to check out the other towers. Even the outside fireplace near Trader Sam's was decorated for the holidays. Speaking of Trader Sam's, I have to admit I was sorely tempted. We were coming close to the end of the holiday and we had not made it to Trader Sam's yet. I was not opposed to a little pre-dinner drink and dropped some hints, but Graham did not bite.

While we had a bit of a wander, we came across Old Faithful. I can't remember seeing this before. There was a sign there that this was originally located at the mine train at Disneyland. At the time we thought that this was from Big Thunder Mountain and was brought there after the recent refurbishment. I have since found out that this was from an older mine train attraction. We wondered if Old Faithful actually erupts and stayed there for a while. It did start gurgling and then erupted. Once it was finished, we moved on.

We headed over to the Frontier Tower where we admired the model of Big Thunder Mountain and I inspected the themed Christmas tree. We decided to have a bit of a break and sat down on the comfortable chairs in this area and watched the world go by. Normally this area is very quiet, but with this being Thanksgiving there was quite a bit of movement. Once we had rested a little, we headed over to the Adventure tower. The Christmas tree there amused me no end. It had a distinct Indiana Jones theme down to the tree topper being Indy's hat. This actually worked very well.

Once we had made the rounds of the different areas at the Disneyland Hotel, we had one last stop. We headed over to the Paradise Pier Hotel. This one I was very curious about. The tree there has an ocean theme and a lot of people have commented that they feel it is overdone and that this is their least favourite tree around the resort. I am usually drawn to anything to do with the ocean and this was no different. The colour scheme of the tree also really appealed to me. If I could have a downscaled version of any of the trees I saw in my house, this would be the one I would choose.

We had timed our arrival perfectly. The carol singers were in residence. We stayed around for a bit and listened. They were rather good. I also finally got my resort pin. I was glad that I had waited as they had a special holiday pin.

Once the carol singers had left, I took some close up photos of the tree and then we took the lift to the top floor. The elevator lobbies and Paradise Pier have huge windows and they just so happen to be pointing in the right direction for the sunset. We had a little wait, but we were treated to a pretty spectacular sunset.

When the sun had set, we headed back over to the Disneyland Hotel. They host a special Thanksgiving buffet at the Grand Ballroom. When we got there, there was a huge line that went from the entrance to the Grand Ballroom, along the whole of the corridor leading away from Goofy’s Kitchen and Steakhouse 55 and out of the door. I got in line and Graham had a wander around. He rejoined me once I got near the door to the Grand Ballroom. Considering the length of the line, the wait was actually mercifully short. I think I only waited about 10 minutes. They had set up check in desk where we paid for the meal and where given special button badges. Once we had checked in, we were directed to the room next door, which was used as the waiting area. They had tables there and had set up tables with refreshments at the back wall. I had some lemonade and Graham had some coffee while we waited. The room was heaving. I was looking out for Georgios and Gabriella from a thread I was following, as I knew they would be there at around the same time, but I did not spot them.

After a while, our names were called and we were escorted to our table. Our table was in a perfect position. We were very close to the buffet. Our server came to introduce himself and took our drinks order. I had a Coke and Graham had ice tea. Then we were let loose on the buffet. Graham sent me to check out the lay of the land and where everything was. He then headed for the appetizer buffet. He came back with some seafood, assorted cheeses, bread and cold cuts. He mentioned a strange cheese that was so soft that they had to use a spatula to put it on your plate. He had passed on this. I got rather excited. There is only one thing that I could think off that matched his description: raclette. Raclette refers to both semi-firm cow's milk cheese and the dish for which it is used. In its traditional form, the cut edge of the cheese wheel is exposed to a heat source so that it melts slowly and the melted part of the cheese is then scraped onto the plate. I was a little bit surprised by this as this is a regional dish of Switzerland, but it is also known in Germany. I was not aware that it was known outside that geographical area. However, when i approached the buffet, it quickly became obvious that it was indeed raclette. I was a very happy bunny. I had some of this with different kinds of bread. It was absolutely gorgeous. I also had some other cheese and some cold cuts.

Then it was time to explore the main part of the buffet. This consisted of various pods. First there was a pod with soups and salads. I could not resist the corn chowder and Graham had some salad. Then came the kids' area with things like orange chicken, pizza, macaroni cheese, peanut butter and jelly Panini, meatballs and corn dog nuggets. There rest of the buffet was taken up with a cavery where they offered turkey, ham and prime rib, various hot dishes and sides. I went with a slice of turkey, a slice of prime rib, some stuffing, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes and gravy. This was a bit of a mixed bag. I loved the mashed potato, the green bean casserole and the prime rib was simply divine. I normally love stuffing and could make a meal out of it. I had stuffing before in the USA and liked it, but this was very sweet and I did not like it at all. The worst part of this was the turkey though. It had a strange rubbery texture and a just tasted salty. I think they used reconstituted meat rather than proper turkey for this.

After I finished that plate, I had a bit of a wander around to let the food go down a little. I took some photos of the decorations and the projections. They had character meet and greets set up on the two extreme ends of the ballroom. At the end closest to us, they had Chip and Dale and the Country Bears out when I walked past so I stopped for some photos. Walking down there, I had seen Pocahontas, but she had gone in by the time I got there. I was assured she would be out again soon. I headed back to the table.

Shortly after I got back, some familiar faces were walking by. They were Georgios and Gabriella. They had not spotted me, but as they are from Germany, I called out Guten Abend and they looked over. We chatted for a bit and took some photos and then they moved on. I was so glad that we ended up meeting.

I decided that there were some things on the kids’ buffet that I wanted to try. Fortunately all the food was bite size. The peanut butter and jelly panini were about the size of ravioli. So I had one of those. I also had a couple of corn dog nuggets and a couple of lumps of orange chicken. Apart from the orange chicken, which had a strange aftertaste, everything hit the spot.

I decided to go and check out if Pocahontas was back and she was and had brought Meeko with her. I also spotted that Robin Hood and Friar Tuck had replaced the Country Bears. I was utterly delighted that I managed to meet so many characters that I had never met before.

While I was meeting characters, Graham had been to explore the dessert buffet. He mentioned a chocolate fountain. I am not really a dessert person and I had enough to eat, but I thought I better at least go and have a look. They had all kinds of different mini desserts, a crepe station and then the chocolate fountain. I had the last two strawberries dipped in chocolate. They also had some homemade marshmallows. I had some mint-flavoured ones and some pumpkin-flavoured ones. They wanted to dip them in chocolate for me, but I politely declined. They were absolutely delicious.

I decided to check out the characters at the other end. This was more organized and a lot busier. They had set up a Thanksgiving feast and they were rotating Minnie, Pluto, Donald and Daisy with Clarabelle and Horace Horsecollar. When I got there Clarabelle and Horace were out, but they soon went in and were replaced by Minnie, Pluto, Donald and Daisy. The line moved as slowly as molasses. By the time I got to the front of the line, Pluto had gone to get some dog biscuits, but I got to meet with Minnie, Donald and Daisy. Only Minnie was wearing a special outfit.

I decided to get back in line in the hope that I would get to meet Clarabelle and Horace Horsecollar. Graham came over and told me that he had our stuff. I asked him if he had my Mickey ears. He looked somewhat vague. I had put my Club 33 Mickey ears on the empty chair next to me while I was eating. I headed over to our table and fortunately they were still there. When I got back in line, Minnie, Donald and Daisy were still there. At some stage they were replaced Clarabelle and Horace Horsecollar. The line moved even slower. There tended to be extended families and each family seemed to have photos taken in various configurations. I started to wish that they would employ the same rule that they do for the special meet and greets on Disney Cruise Line where they will allow one pose per family. At some stage, the character manager announced that Clarabelle and Horace would go for a break in about 10 minutes. I had about half a dozen families in front of me and I started to realize that I may not get to see them.

Again I was at the receiving end of some serious pixie dust. The cast member who had been near the beginning of the line when I got back in came over. She told me that she did not think I would have my turn before they would switch. However, she told me where to go and stand. She pointed to the door where they would leave through and said that I should have the chance to get a couple of quick photos with them as they were leaving. I thanked her quietly and took off.

I got into position. Soon it was announced that Clarabelle and Horace would meet one last family and then go for a break. It took a while until they were done with this family. Finally they we're heading in my direction. I started to get a little nervous if this would work. There had obviously been some kind of stage whispers as both of them headed straight for me. More amazing still, as they approached me, a cast member suddenly appeared next to me out of nowhere and offered to take some photos. The resulting photos are my favourite character photos of this trip.

Once the mission was accomplished, I headed out to the room that had been used as a waiting area earlier. I found Graham and we started to make our way back to our hotel. This felt like a very long walk that evening. I wish I already had my Fitbit at that point as I think I must have walked miles that day. Still, it had been an amazing day and I would not have missed it for the world. By the time we got back to the hotel, we both had enough though. We got ready and settled down for the night.

I'm glad you got so many great character photos! Especially on Thanksgiving day! Good for you!

I'm still following your wonderful trip report and I'm excited to see that the Thanksgiving part is here now and that you had a great experience. We also enjoyed it very much. I still can't believe that you spotted us there. We were looking out for you too, but we abandoned hope after a while to find you in this crowded place. I'm so glad that you got to see all the characters, we were lucky meeting them all too. I hope there is more to read, how many days are missing?

I have never been at WDW or DL for Thanksgiving yet! We would love to as not celebrating it outside America it would be a different experience for us Europeans! The food sounds up my street.

I love the stained glass windows in one photo. Cool photos of you and characters nice one catching some rare opptunities like 3 caballeros.

That red apple freeze sounds nice! Shame you couldn't find Pete but kind of you to look. Yeah Toy Story with a short line!

Oh my those trees! Amazeballs. I like the Grand California one best. So pretty.

I have seen that raclette cheese here. I am glad that had it for you. Your dinner sounded lovely. Not real turkey though that would dissapoint me! But the kids station sounded all good.

Love,y sunset photos. Gorgeous day. Thanks for sharing.

Love seeing all your pictures!!

I had to laugh that they were offering raclette as an appetizer for your Thanksgiving meal. When Michael was here in Germany over New Years Eve, we had a meal with friends and it was raclette. Michael got quite a shock about the amount of cheese that was consumed that evening!

I am surprised at the many exotic characters they had available for that buffet meal!

Great pictures! Loved all the Christmas decorations!

What a great day and so lovely you got the pixie dust with the characters :goodvibes

Thanks. It really was a fantastic day.

I'm glad you got so many great character photos!

I did well that day. This day and the following day really helped with my character hunt.

I still can't believe that you spotted us there.

That really was a stroke of luck.

I hope there is more to read, how many days are missing?

There are three more days at Disneyland to come, the travel day and an epilogue.

I have never been at WDW or DL for Thanksgiving yet!

If you get the chance, grab it. If I had to do it again, I would arrive just before Thanksgiving and then enjoy the quieter time between Thanksgiving and Christmas. We always had Thanksgiving towards the end of our trip.

Cool photos of you and characters nice one catching some rare opptunities like 3 caballeros.

Thanks. I got really lucky that day.

That red apple freeze sounds nice!

It really is nice. I have since found out that it is the same as Le Fou's Brew at Magic Kingdom.

Oh my those trees! Amazeballs. I like the Grand California one best. So pretty.

I loved how different all the trees and decorations were. The tree at Paradise Pier is my favourite one though.

I love the stained glass windows in one photo.

This is inside Fiddler, Fifer and Practical Cafe, which is the Starbucks location at California Adventure.

I had to laugh that they were offering raclette as an appetizer for your Thanksgiving meal.

This was a bit of a surprise, but a very nice one. I could eat my bodyweight in cheese given half a chance.

I am surprised at the many exotic characters they had available for that buffet meal!

I was very happy with this. I knew there would be characters there, but had no idea who would be out and about.

Great pictures! Loved all the Christmas decorations!

Thanks. The Christmas decorations are truly stunning.

You really got a lot of characters I didn't even know came out. Too cool about the Three Caballeros and Clarabelle and Horace, and the Country Bears!

I loved seeing all the Christmas decorations, wow! The lights out front of DL Hotel are just magical, and the tree at PP is gorgeous!

Day 20

That day, time was at the essence. Although the holiday season had been in full swing for two weeks, another holiday tradition was due to start that day and it needed some careful timing to pull this off. On select days starting the day after Thanksgiving, they make handmade candy canes. What makes these candy canes special is that they're made entirely by hand using a Disneyland recipe that dates back to 1965. They make three batches of 45 candy canes each per day and in order to get a wristband, you need to be there early. About half of the dates are for Disneyland and half of the dates are for California Adventure. The first day on which they were made that season was a Disneyland date. They are made at Candy Palace at Disneyland and at Trolley Treats at California Adventure. I had heard real horror stories about how many people are trying to get those candy canes and even if you are lucky enough to get one of the coveted wristbands, the slots for picking them up are really tight. There was another date for the candy canes the next day over at California Adventure, but because of the other commitments I had the next day, I was hoping to get my candy cane that day.

I knew to stand any chance at all; I needed to be there about 30 minutes before rope drop. All went according to plan. I got there in plenty of time and for once the line at the bag check was mercifully short. I headed for one of the turnstiles at the far left end of the Esplanade. Not only did this put me in a straight line to where I wanted to go, but there were not many people waiting there either. Of course the one family that was ahead of me had some issues with the tickets. I believe they were some discounted tickets for the military and for some reason the system did not recognize them. So a supervisor had to be called and she worked her magic. Then they had to take a photo each. I started to believe that getting a candy cane may just have been a dream. Eventually it was my turn and I half expected that it would decide not to read my annual pass. Fortunately there were no further delays and as soon as I was through the turnstiles, I powerwalked down Main Street USA. Main Street USA felt three times as long as usual and when I approached the line for the candy canes, this looked huge. Cast Members were walking along the line giving out wristbands and they did not have many left. I started to think that I was so close yet so far away. Then a cast member walked up to me and put a wristband on my wrist. I had made the cut. I know it is such a silly thing, but it was like the whole world just lit up. The cast member commented that she had never seen quite so big a smile. I was told that I could pick up the candy cane between 12:30 and 16:00. This was a much more generous time frame than the one I had heard about from previous years.

I figured as this was obviously my lucky day, I may as well try to get a return time to meet Anna and Elsa. The end of the line for this was just past the entrance to the Jingle Jangle Jamboree. I quickly took a couple of photos of the decorations in the area and then I joined the line. Fortunately it moved steadily and in the end I was in line for around 20 minutes. As I had plans for the afternoon, I was not sure if the return time would work for me, but I got lucky once again. I had a return time between 13:00 and 13:20, which was perfect for me. This meant that I could meet Anna and Elsa and then go to collect my candy cane on my way out. I definitely had pixie dust sprinkled on me that day.

I still had some time until my breakfast reservation so I decided to head over to It’s A Small World Holiday. The line looked impressive, but moved very quickly. I ended up waiting about 20 minutes, which I was happy with. I enjoyed the ride again. I then made my way slowly back towards Main Street USA. On the way, I bumped into Captain Hook. I was very happy about this. During this trip, I was doing a sponsored character hunt for Give Kids The World Village. The main objective was to get photos with as many different characters (or characters with unique costumes) as possible. However, I had a couple of specific challenges. One was either to get a villain to wear a pair of Mickey ears or if this was not possible to make a villain angry. Captain Hook was the only villain I saw all trip and as he wears a rather splendid hat, the Mickey ears idea would not have worked. He did however play along with me and acted very angry. Once we had some photos to document this, he gave me a nice big hug to show that there were no hard feelings.
