A Small DIS Camping Meet Occurred Tonight

Gulf Sate Park allows any type camping on any site. Tents, Pop Ups or Campers or Motorhomes. Regular sites have power, water, sewer and a pic nick table. They also have a new section for just or primitive camping (Tents) with no services and only a fire pit and table. We love Gulf Sate Park and go several times a year. We're taking our new Open Range Fifth Wheel camping for the first time there from June 30- July 8. Planning a little Dismeeting with anyone that's there around July 4th. Then our next trip is to the Fort for Halloween and the start of the Osborne lights. Super excited about that already.

Oh and if anyone wants to throw a shrimp or crawfish boil I will gladly eat with you.

Does the Gulf State Park in Alabama allow tents? That's sounds like a good halfway point for us to the Fort.

We like a good shrimp boil while camping too. Cooking over the firepit takes a little longer, but it's worth it!

Gulf does allow tents as Flametamr says. They have about a dozen sites off the main road toward the back which have no utilities but nice round stone fire pits about knee high. All the other sites allow tents and all 500 sites have power/water/sewer.

Mother, understand that Gulf is about 45 minutes off I10. Proximity to the beach is the main attraction. If you are in the I10 corridor in that area and looking for a tent overnight place to/from the Fort, I recommend Meaher State Park in Mobile Bay. I stayed there last year during the Memorial Day week (one of the few times I passed on Gulf because I went to a concert over at a Biloxi casino one night). It's a small campground, maybe 50 sites, but a nice mix of shaded or open sites with a beautiful view of the I10 bridge over Mobile Bay (pretty at night). It does have WIFI and a nice central clean Comfort Station. Lots of good restaurants right less than 2 miles from the gate on the Causeway.

The office staff closes the checkin pretty early in the evening but the gate is open and you register with the Campground Host (per the sign posted on the closed checkin building). It is also 5 minutes off I10 and easy on/off the highway.

And when I was at the beach last week, my beverage of choice was the same Bud Light Lime in the tall can that is in your picture. :worship: :drinking1

As Bama Ed states Gulf State Park is about 45 minutes South of I-10. Unless you really want to go to that area it really is not a convenient place for an overnight stop. I have never camped at Maeher but have gone through there and it looks nice. Another option might be the KOA in Milton FL.

Vince, you have no idea. That stuff is high on my list of must have foods. Right behind armadillo on the half shell (work up a mean appetite trying to catch them) and crow feather salads (don't worry, the birds aren't hurt, they're just cold until the new feathers grow back).

Hope you were joking about the armadillo...only critter known to carry leprosy that can be passed to humans...well, maybe if you heat it up real good first...? :)

Flametamr,
We'll be there July 6-12th and I just might be willing to bring the cooker and the pot and boil some more shrimp, potatoes, and corn like I did for Ed. We always like meeting new people and I figure food is one of the best ways to get some people together. I'll send you a PM as the time gets closer. We have requested Bear Road again this trip. It will be our last camping trip before we head back to the Fort in October.

Ed,
I was just fixing to make the comment about the lime Bud Light as I noticed that was what you were drinking the night you guys came over for dinner.

MotherRunner,
If you do decide to ride on down to Gulf State Park, take exit 49 off of I-10 as it is a bypass and much faster and easier to reach the campground.

Is that what that rash was? Funny, I thought it was just some poison ivy...

Sounds good since we check out on July 8th. We'll have a two days to get together. Let us know for sure but you don't have to cook for us. We're good with just some Bud Light and conversation. We look forward to meeting y'all.

Wow! You guys are making me reconsider plans for next summer. I was going to try to go to the Fort the week after my DS gets out of school. His last day, if they use all 7 snow days, would be June 1. So I was going to check in at the Fort Saturday June 4th. Now I want to go over to GSP for a few days before going to the Fort to see everyone. Problem would be that you would be about ready to leave by the time we came in on Thursday. Now I could take 2 weeks off, hope we don't use all 7 snow days and book reservations for Memorial Day through the 4th at GSP and wish for the best.

Hmmm

Can't beat it. Nice and light for outdoor day drinking and complies with campsite no glass policies :thumbsup2 You also can't beat a juice box but I leave those for the kids.

Thanks for the park tips!

A while back I seen on the local news that the state is planning on remodeling some of Gulf State Park, making it even better than what it is now.

Randy,
This came up during mine and Ed's face stuffing of shrimp and potatoes. I do like how now there is AC in the bath houses, though I only used them once on the last night (we were able to do all our other showering at the camper). I did see some survey people doing some work on the main drag through the park as well. They were also doing some general maintenance on the bridge leading over the canal. This is the location where I was "accused" of trying to give Ed a heart attack when I blew my horn at him.

Oh, GSP has bigger hopes and dreams in the future, Tiggerdad.

First, let me explain that the Alabama State Park system claims that 90% of their budget is funded by we the users through the fees we pay for campsites, entrance fees, etc. During this current round of budget battles (still ongoing), the state parks are threatened with cuts to make people fearful and agree to certain funding actions. Much like our local politicians threaten to cut high school football if this or that property tax is not passed.

Second, let me further explain that within that 90% funding provided by the Park system, the bulk of it is provided by 3-4 State parks who make a "net profit" so to speak which is then spread among the State parks who run at a "net loss" to cover their operating budget. It might surprise no one that Gulf State Park is one of the two parks that run the biggest net profit.

Third, a little history lesson. There used to be a lodge (hotel) run by Gulf State Park along the beach that got blown away with Hurricane Ivan in 2004. It was built in the 70s, retained its 70s furniture and feel, had a beautiful view out the restaurant window (seafood buffet was cheap), and made beach rooms affordable for the common citizen. We stayed there many times before it was destroyed. With the lodge, GSP produced even more profit. Without it, the whole Park system has suffered and cut back. Of course the state did not have the money to rebuild it.

The State would like to use millions of the BP Settlement money to build a new lodge at Gulf to pump more money into the Park system and replace what was lost. Problem is, the settlement money was meant to address the effects of the oil spill which was years after Ivan blew away the lodge. This aerial picture of the old lodge and the old pier (rebuilt in a slightly different location at the top of this article) is in this article which outlines the tug of war over what the money was meant for and how they want to spend it: http://www.al.com/news/beaches/index.ssf/2015/03/gulf_state_park_lodge_lawsuit.html

The settlement money would also be used to fund other developments at Gulf, some of which are really cool. Some are environmental focused, some are visitor focused, and it's honestly a pretty neat plan.

I may have had my mouth full of shrimp and potatoes so I apologize if I didn't explain it well enough when you fed me. But Randy was right: they got big plans.

Here is the plan: http://gulfstateparkproject.ua.edu/

It has the potential to be spectacular.

Bama Ed

PS - in the plan link it says Gulf provides 23% of the operating and maintenance budget for the 22-park system. That's a big chunk!

I knew Ed knew what I was talking about, (must be a Alabama thing) Shrimp and pototas does sound pretty good!

Tiggerdad, see yall in a few weeks I don't about a shrimp boil but I'll have some Red Snapper to fry up!

Sounds like a plan Randy. I checked out that site for you and you will have plenty of shade. So see ya in about 2 weeks.

Oh yeah, get that sticker off that lemon will ya, they give me indigestion. I think it's the glue...

Ed, thanks for the links. Some of my family was unclear on what was being planned. They were arguing that GSP was building a luxury resort for a private interest and were clueless as to the old Gulf State Lodge. I've linked them the article, maybe now they'll understand. I remember the old pier, but I don't recall the lodge. Thanks for the history lesson.

Yeah GSP is a big money maker for Alabama State Parks, I know the State refurbished De Soto in Fort Payne and Wind Creek outside Montgomery and they are nice. We stayed at De Soto and really enjoyed it, they repaved the roads and added cable TV hook ups.

Tiggerdad, thanks for checking out that spot, yeah shade is a must! I just hope my camper fits!

Well sounds like you all were just a hop, skip, and a jump away from us...we live just outside of Pensacola :-)

Back to your original post Bama_Ed, I totally agree on trying to meet people from the boards. It's so rare to get to meet new people and what better way than camping (and Disney)!

I saw someone started an "October 2015 Meet & Greet" thread, I think I'm going to get one started for September since that's when we're going down. We'd love to meet anyone we can while there! The wife's going to get started on our campsite marker here soon so we'll have it ready to go.

Thanks to everyone that posts in the camping boards! I truly enjoying reading the posts after a long day at work!
