13 year old in the Vibe

No. 14 year olds have a choice between the Edge and Vibe. 13 year olds must go to the Edge. When my son was 14 ( and still in middle school) he chose to go to the Vibe. He had fun but now that he is 16 he tells me he didn't belong there at 14, it really is only appropriate for high schoolers. High school is definitely a different level of maturity

It simply depends on the number of kids in each group on each cruise. This means that it will be OK for one cruise but not OK for the next cruise.

BTW, there are 13 yos in high school. My daughter turned 14 her freshman year. You can't just say Vibe is good for all HS students and Edge is good for all MS students. It depends on the maturity level of the individual. That is why there is an overlap allowed to begin with.

Keep in mind they would be hanging out with 17 year olds. Even if an exception was made, that is probably not what you want for your 13 year old. Conversations may not always be appropriate etc. etc.

I just posted the following question on another similar thread.... But seeing as that it seems to be a topic of interest at the moment, I thought I would ask here too.... Similar to OP question, but opposite - can a young 14 yr old be allowed in the clu/lab for an hour or two in order to stay with younger siblings?

... I've seen so many conflicting posts - some say "No, ages are hard set" and others say "Maybe, it depends".

I have 4 - they will be 14, 12, 9, and 3 when we travel in mid September. We homeschool and they enjoy being together. They've been talking a lot lately about the club/lab/edge... My oldest son and daughter can hang together at the Edge, the younger two boys can hang at the club/lab, and DD12 can bounce between both.

Here's the "issue"... The oldest (my Peter Pan) wants to know if he can, on occasion, go to the club/lab with the younger three. I know during open houses he can do this. Again, because they're used to being together more than they are used to being apart, I'm sure the littlest one will want his sister to stay with him, which she can because she's inbetween ages. But that would leave the oldest on his own, and he would rather stay with the pack.

Outside of open houses, is there any chance, does anyone have experience, with an older child being allowed to stay with younger siblings? Not necessary all the time, but perhaps for a couple of hours so that DH and I could go to a mixology or Palo brunch in peace?

Club/Lab is 3-12. That means until their 13th birthday. A 14 year old is over a year too old. The 14 year old can go during Open House (you have to be there, too) but not during normal hours.

I'm actually hoping that it is not allowed but thanks for the advice.

I spent way too much time volunteering at the middle school through PTO. The language and conversations I heard there were horrible! By the time the kids got to HS they just ignored it.

When we cruised for Spring Break in 2013, my boys were 13.5 and 14.5. The 14.5 year old was 5'5" and *maybe* 103 pounds, and is a science nerd. The 13.5 year old was 5'11", 210 pounds, a 2nd Degree Black Belt, and (at the time) Assistant Instructor at his martial arts school (he's always hung out with people much older than he is - he's my old soul). Guess who everyone always thought was the *older* kiddo?

We happened to upgrade to Concierge at port, and when the staff met Thing 2, they actually picked up the phone and called Vibe without us saying anything. Putting Thing 2 in with a group of 11 and 12 year olds wouldn't have been a good fit on multiple levels (his sheer size intimidated a lot of kids that were even his age) - and he had a blast at the Vibe. He actually made more friends than Thing 1 (who was perfectly happy to hang out in there and play video games).

I like that CM are able to do this without parents asking for their child to be moved up. Why is everyone in such a hurry for their kids to be older? Disney has set up the areas for certain ages. For some kids (like yours) it makes sense to up them into a more appropriate group. I hope the CM's are able to keep doing this in the future. It's unfortunate for some that it's very strict for the almost 3 year olds that would enjoy the club over the nursery. I wonder if this had to do with all the parents saying their child was ready or if there was another reason.

I couldn't agree more with this! As someone who volunteers extensively with a group of 8-12 graders, it's the younger ones you have to watch out for. I think it's natural at the jr high / middle school age to want to seem "cool" and older than they really are. By the time they hit sr high school, they're over it, getting on with their life. Over the last four years of working with this organization it's definitely the 8th and 9th graders that are a challenge. The older students are honestly a delight!

My first thought on reading OP's post was that the 16/17 year olds won't want to deal with a bunch of 13 year olds! I know it's a gross generalization, and there are plenty of perfectly wonderful, mature 13/14 year olds. It's just a tough age for a lot of kids to get through. I think there is a very good reason Disney separates the teens into Edge and Vibe ages.

My guess on the Nursery/Club or Lab thing is because there is SUCH a huge age range in there. People have complained about their 3 and 4 year olds being intimidated (and in some cases knocked down) by the bigger kids running around - can you imagine a little 2 year old??? If the Club and Lab were still separated by ages, there MIGHT still be some flexibility, but because too many parents didn't want their Club and Lab aged kids separated, it's a HUGE age gap in there, and I"m sure the technically nursery-age kids are a liability.

On both of our last 2 cruises, 13 year olds were allowed in Vibe as long as a parent signed a waiver. One cruise was on the Fantasy - Jan, 2014. The other was the Dream just 2 months ago. Hope that helps!
