Florida residents, do you agree?

OP, my DH and I went to WDW in July in our foolish youth, before we had a family, needless to say we never did that again. Lol! My perfect mix: Florida-Jan, Feb and March and New England-rest of the year. When the kids are all out of college-that is my plan! I think the first year I do this I might just spend an entire month at the theme parks everyday! :)

Yes! Those are the months I don't like in Syracuse. The cold and snow of December is charming, and then... it isn't. It's just such a wonderful climate to me the rest of the year. As I sit at my picnic table, in a perfect temperature right now, watching my daughter throw dirt (oh wait).

I moved to South Florida last August from Massachusetts. I love it here. I used to hibernate in the house for 6 months out of the year. I am not a cold weather person, like snow for all of five minutes and I don't like to ski, snowmobile, etc. I'm minutes from the beach and can be outside everyday. I would never move some place for a theme park. We wanted to move south to eventually retire and circumstances brought us to FL. It's just an added bonus that WDW is 3 hours away.

I cringe when I read what others pay for park entrance fees and hotel fees. Am I the only one? If I didn't live here I would cry.

I'm happy I'm an annual pass holder.

No, I'm thankful.

The amount I see people are spending. Plane rides, entrance fees. And anything else I have no idea what they spend on.

our rates are fabulous. But that's how they "get" us. And I'm not mad about it.

We lived out of state for 4 years and it did bum me out to pay non-resident rates when we visited.

This last trip we skipped all the roller coasters due to DH back problems
It really made me WONDER if its worth the HIGH cost

For that I envy you Floridians!!

I love to visit Florida but would never live there. Florida has a lot of transients. You can drive thru a neighborhood with million dollar houses and then a few minutes later you are in the slums. We live in northern NJ and love the change of seasons. Also, I remember thinking the annual resident passes were expensive? How much is an AP for a Florida resident?

Right now at AAA, they are $509 which is not bad. You gecan get a seasonal which basically blocks out the summer and Christmas week for $315. That is what we have since we only go in the off season.

I CRINGE nearly every time I see what others are paying for their vacations!! I am frugal (sometimes excessively)....each Disney vacation we have taken has been less than $2000...and each trip was at least 7 days. That's the MOST I am willing to spend. I am not talking about applying "free" money to bring the total down, I mean the total is less than two grand regardless of where the money comes from!!! I read posts, and think "wow, these people are WEALTY!!!"

That used to be our number too. However, with the increase in ticket prices, food, and hotel rooms, and the addition of 2 kids, we can't do WDW for that figure anymore.

I hear about some of these families spending close to 10k for these disney trips. I can never imagine spending that kind of money going to a theme park. My wife and I spent 2 weeks in Spain and stayed at really nice places. We were all over the country and did not spend anywhere close to what some people spend on Disney vacations.

I love living in FLA. We used to have seasonal passes to Disney. Now we have them for Universal. But I grew up here - and you are right - the summer weather is not for the faint of heart. I have had many visiting friends and relatives jump out of their skin during one of our summer rain/lightning storms. Perfectly normal to us - scary for them!

But we also "summer vacation" some where else... every year. I am always jealous as we are driving and I realize how close other states are to each other and how quickly you can visit other places. It takes me 3 hours just to get out of the state! :)

Takes us almost 6 hrs to get out of the state. I have friends in Berkeley, ca. Who are a close drive to skiing and going to the beach. I am jealous of them.

We are 30 minutes from the beach, an hour and a half from the snow (not usually more than 5 months out of the year however) and 3-3 1/2 hours from Arizona or Nevada. Oh, and 15 minutes from Disneyland :sunny: Can't imagine living anywhere else!

I wouldn't spend $10k either. However, it is defintely more than $2k these day.

Seriously? I'm quite sure NJ has it's fair share of transient population and slums minutes away from million dollar homes.

No NJ has no "slums". It's perfect there. Don't you love it when these snowbirds come to visit us every year between November and may. We celebrate when we see the trucks full of cars from nj and ny heading back north

Key words=my wife and I. A lot of the people who are spending a lot have large families and also can't travel during cheaper travel times because of school. Honestly, there is nothing we can do that is cheap other than visit grandparents in NC mountains.

Also, out of the country is cost prohibitive for us...even if everything in that country seems cheap. My DH was just in South Africa for work. Giant steak dinner was $10, play with baby lions $5, etc. BUT just getting 5 people there (we have a family of 5) would cost more than our whole Disney vacation.

I don't understand why people need to cringe about how we spend money. DH and I earned our money...he has had a job risking his life since age 22 (military and law enforcement). We both have retirement accounts set up, we donate to charity, we pay taxes...why would $8k on a vacation every 4 years be cringeworthy?

It really depends on how you choose to spend your money that makes how you view how others spend theirs. To me, $8K is a LOT of money for one vacation. My two vacations this year are costing less than that. BUT I have less people than you do. There are only 3 of us going on these vacations. And I can't imagine only going on vacation once every 3 to 4 years. But I'm willing to travel super cheap to be able to go on these vacations. Not camping cheap but I'm willing to cook on vacation if it means I can travel. Again, just my view for my life.
