Review: "Tomorrowland" perfectly channels Walt Disney's philosophy and spirit

Like some of the PP, I was so incredibly excited leading up to this movie but unfortunately just ended up liking it but not loving it as I originally expected. The beginning was AMAZING with the re-creation of the 1964 Worlds Fair and the introduction of Casey and the Tomorrowland pin, however, I feel that once the pin mystery was solved the second half of the movie dwindled and became less exciting.. I was also surprised the movie did not do as well as expected in opening weekend box office performance..

It was the Number 1 movie for the weekend -so apparently none of the others did well either. I don't know if Memorial Day weekend is a big movie release weekend or not. I think the actual success/failure will be better estimated after this coming weekend.

Traditionally, it is a big weekend. It's when the summer blockbusters usually launch, but that didn't happen this year. There were no major releases.

I thought it was Just "OK".....the story felt scattered and weak....the majority of the movie doesnt take place in Tommorowland....its asks you to make assumptions about how we get to certain points, and I thought the dialogue was cheesy at best at points

I know, it's going to be a real bummer for those who are use to just buying their way into things!

And how is this any different? It's just another form of elitism, based on optimism or whatever they decide, instead of on who has the most money. The only thing that's changed in the new Tomorrowland is who is making the decision on who gets chosen. Throughout the movie, Casey talked about EVERYONE needing to be involved, but then she and Frank did the exact same thing Nix had done.

That's exactly my point. It's elitist. They're doing exactly what Nix was doing, but with a slightly different protocol. For the record, I don't think the end-goal is to have a society of just dreamers, but to change the earth and the way earthlings interact with it so it doesn't end so soon, but, looking deeper, I think they realize that Tomorrowland can only exist if Earth does.

They way I took the film, was that Nix' message was one of doom on earth and not offering any Hope(like the pins originally offered), rather he was poisoning the psychological atmosphere. Instead of changing their ways -people raced towards it ...because if you give up on the future, that means you don't have to do anything right now! Casey was chosen because she recognized the flaw in that message(and to kill it). So I believe the idea was to send out a new group of "recruiters" to find a new generation of hopeful people(dreamers) using this message of Hope, thus breaking the negative and creating a positive outlook on earth and a brighter "Tomorrow." Not everyone is going to "Wanna Go(?)" but having an option wouldn't be elitist in my opinion.

Well, count me in the crowd of "loved it". I agree this was not the best made art film ever, but the message is truly powerful -- and I sobbed heavily at the very end. The nods to Walt's vision made it even better.

I plan to buy those pins at the park (I hope) and leave them unsuspectingly for my daughters. Hopefully, they will get the message that they can be one of those Dreamers.

Thank you to the podcast crew. I would not have bothered to take my family to see the film had it not been for Pete's passionate endorsement on the show.

Did everyone else get the pins at the movie??
We were each given a pin when we purchased tickets. I assumed that all the theaters gave them out.

No. Not all theaters did this

Enjoyed it quite a bit, particularly the ending.

REALLY wish they'd marketed the movie better. The commercials I saw over this past weekend, which emphasized Clooney and the sci-fi aspects of the film, would have been a better angle from which to market the movie from the beginning. I think it will make a modest showing in its theater run, then grow in popularity through repeated viewings on cable, etc.

I agree with this. The movie was poorly marketed. The trailers gave no indication of what the movie was actually about.

I think the original trailer was spectacular ..but after that they really seemed to drop the ball regarding mainstream publicity. There was plenty of other media build-up on other sources(ARG Marketing)...

...and a book which was pretty good, "Before Tomorrowland." So it was there, just not in "traditional" mainstream media. Some of it was really cool -have you seen this thread:

Completely agree. Loved the first 2/3 of the movie. Once they went back to tomorrow land, the movie slowed. Felt the storyline was disjointed and too drawn out. Wish the last 1/3 would have fit better with the beginning.
