I have a Feb. use year. I have already borrowed my 2016 points that were used for a trip this year.
I want to make a reservation in 2016 borrowing my 2017 points. Do I have to wait until Feb. 1, 2016 (my use year) or can I make the reservation Jan. 1, 2016? Thanks!

I have a Feb. use year.

use year is pretty much a nonissue.

if you can make a reservation that falls in your 2016 UY, you can borrow 2017 UY pts to make the reservation.

so if you wanted to book feb 1, 2016, you could have booked it at your home resort by calling on mar 1, 2015 using borrowed 2017 UY pts.

you can book 11 months ahead at your home resort and 7 months ahead for other DVC resorts.

when you call to book, you can use banked pts from the prior UY + current UY pts ("current" based on the dates of the stay falling within that UY) + borrowed pts from the next UY (if needed).

So a question slightly different than the original, but this already looks clarified. So what if you borrow from next year then cancel (well in advance of 30 days)....can you put those borrowed points back to next year???

both banking and borrowing are FINAL transactions.

once you move pts they can never be moved again and will expire if not used for a stay by the end of the UY they were moved into.

if a reservation has both borrowed and current pts, you could try to free up current pts if you cancel more than a month out AND before your banking window closes. then you could bank the current pts that you freed up, but any banked or borrowed pts are stuck.

An extended answer would be if you can make a reservation in use year X you can bank from the previous year (X-1) and borrow from the next use year (X+1). For certain reservation (ex. Cruises, Adventures by Disney) the rules allow for reservations up to 2 years in the future, if you made a reservation two years out you could borrow from 3 years out. A real mess if you cancel, since the points would all be stuck in the one year and not good for reserving DVC rooms.

I think the simple answer is, you can borrow when you need to borrow. If you can make the reservation, then you can borrow for the reservation.

Can someone clarify a date for me. Ironically exactly the same scenario as OP even the use year is the same. I want to travel December 2016, borrowing 2017 points. When can i make the reservation at my home resort? Thank you in advance

You can book in January 2016 for a December 2016 reservation.

Just be aware that, with a February use year, you need to be certain about your trip. Once you borrow those 2017 points, they'll expire on 2/1/2017. If you cancel that December reservation, you won't have much time to reschedule without losing those points. This is a situation we warn about when selecting a use year.

You can make a reservation at your home resort 11 months before your travel date. That is totally independent of your use year. Your use year only effect what points are past, current or future.

You can always book 11 months before the first day of your stay, for up to 7 days. Points used are based on the UY that you will travel, not when you call. So, to use 2017 UY points, you must be traveling in your 2016 UY (no matter which one you have).

For example, if one owns a Feb UY, then a 2016 UY trip would fall between February 1st, 2016 until January 31st, 2017. If one owns an August UY, then you could borrow 2017 UY points for trips from August 1st, 2016 through July 31st, 2017.

Figure out the UY you will travel and once known, know that you can book with banked points from UY prior to travel, points from UY of travel, and borrow points from UY after travel!

Thank you to the original poster. I'm on here about to post a very similar question, but thought I'd check the board first.
My UY is Oct. If I want to book a vacation for July 2016 using my Oct 2016 points, does this mean I can not borrow Oct 2017 points to be used in July 2016?

So right now you are in your October 2014 UY (October 1st, 2014-September 30th, 2015)

Your July 2016 reservation falls in your October 2015 UY (October 1st, 2015-September 20th, 2016).

That means you can use your October 2015 points, and borrow from October 2016. You CANNOT borrow from October 2017 as that is too far ahead.

That's what I thought. Thank you!

Thank you for this! We're new to DVC so it gives me a headache to think about how this works. We have a UY of August. 2015 points are used but we want to borrow 2016 points to go late fall of 2015 (I know we're late - we closed and just waiting for DVC Member services to send us our info!) As soon as I get my member number I can book my stay, correct? All 150 points of my Aug 1, 2014 - July 31, 2015 points have been used already. I don't have to wait? From what I'm understanding UY is arbitrary as long as your stay is within the borrowing period (I just wouldn't be able to book a stay before July 31st, 2015 using borrowed points from 2016 UY.

it's not arbitrary, it's just a matter of convincing people that the date they call has nothing to do with it.

always start by looking at the date(s) of your stay. then figure out what UY period that stay falls into (a fall 2015 trip falls in your 2015 UY). then you know that you can also use banked pts (from 2014 UY, if any) plus borrowed pts (from 2016, if needed).

the date you can call is only based on home resort, so you'd need to be within 11 months of the dates of your stay to book your home resort (or 7 months elsewhere)...which in this case, you easily are.
