The things I'll do for Disney

My husband, who is NOT a Disney fan, has finally agreed to plan a trip to Disney and has even agreed to stay onsite. The only caveat is that he'll only go if we tent camp. I'm not exactly sure if he just want's to camp that bad or if he's testing my resolve to see the lengths I'll go to in order to get to go to Disney World. In the past I've usually stayed at the Wilderness Lodge or Caribbean Beach. I did stay at FW when I was very young on trips with my grandparents. They had a Honeybee camper and I have great memories of those trips and FW. TENT camping though....is different from staying in an RV, it has different challenges. I'm a little nervous about it. Does anyone have any pictures of how you've set up your tent camping site? I think I would be a little less trepidatious if I could visualize it. Honestly though, I'd sleep under a bush if it meant I was at Disney!! :)

You already know the Fort is a different level of camping. Some of the tent setups I've seen are probably nicer than some of the resort rooms. You will have electric and water, so TV, lights, blow dryers and even air conditioning are all done. Most sites are big enough for a huge tent, screen room and a smaller "supplies" tent. Set the outdoor carpet, string some lights and nice chairs and it doesn't get much better.

Have a great time and enjoy the camping and everything the Fort has to offer. You may just convert DH into a real Disney fan.

That's our site from April. There is a big tent, a small tent, and a canopy with a camp kitchen and picnic table underneath, and there was still tons of room.

We tent camp a lot and it's the nicest campground I've EVER been to. Bring air mattresses and bedding (no sleeping bags!), a nice big tent and a canopy, and it will be great. We were in loop 1500 so just a short walk to the pool, trading post, and outdoor movie.

My first trip ever to Disney was in a tent at Fort Wilderness. Started a lifetime love of WDW. I agree, it's a whole different level of "roughing it!" Loop 1500 is great for its proximity to the pool and more.

What time of year do you want to come to the Fort, thatgirl, and are you and/or hubbie tent campers at home?

I have stayed in the Cabins, brought our RV and this last trip we did tents. LOVE tent camping....a little more work but we loved it.

I have several pictures of our last tenting experience in my signature link.

As I walk around I take pictures of tent and interesting setups (although I have a popup). Here are some pix from the library:

Tents can be awkward on a Premium site (no tent pad).

We have tent camped at FW twice and it was amazing both times. We were centrally located and didn't mind the internal buses at all. Site was very clean. Don't know where my pictures of the site are now but we pitched our tent in back corner, put up a screen shelter over the picnic table and hung clotheslines to shelter and trees so we always had dry towels and bathing suits. A little shower in the afternoon did not get our cooking "stuff" wet at all since it was under the screen shelter. Just do a Bing or Google search (tent camping at fort wilderness) and you will find lots of images!

We did not, of course, leave any valuables in the campsite when we weren't there but felt just fine that none of our gear would walk away and it didn't. Neighbors were friendly and quiet both times.

I want to do it again BADLY!! We were in the 1500 loop both times.

If you are going in the summer may I suggest a large canopy for your tent like the blue one bama_ed posted. We used something like that to make sure the heavy afternoon rains stayed out of the tents.

It's been a very busy 15 years and I rarely get to just play around for pleasure on the web, it's usually all work. :) I usually take quick little mini breaks here and there on this site when I need a mental vacation, and the DIS is truly a mental vacation. I've enjoyed hearing about everyone's experiences so far and yes, I need to quit being shy and start posting. Thanks for the welcome. :)

I'm thinking October of next year, it's going to take that long to get our schedules aligned enough to have sufficient time off at the same time. We...sorta...camp. :) We've tent camped together some. The first time you could barely get in the tent, I brought so many pillows. It was comfy though! Each time we go, I take less and less "stuff" with me so I'm getting better! :) We plan to camp a lot this summer, I'll just look at it as practice for Disney.

Thanks for the pictures! It helps! I know it's not going to be until next year, but now that I'm getting used to the idea, I'm kind of getting exited about it. I'll admit, it's hard to envision walking a billion miles in the parks all day and not just flopping into an exhausted heap on a comfy bed and falling asleep to Stacy. :) But I'm coming around to this camping at Disney idea...thanks guys!

WOW. You take camping into a whole new category! :) That set up is amazing! I want to camp with you! Seriously, you could probably start a business just setting up campsites for people. Did that take forever to set up? I am not terribly organized and can only dream of that level of organization. At least it gives me something to aim for! :)

Thank you! That was our first time tent camping as a family and we had planned to be down there for a good long while and wanted to feel as "homey" as possible. We were use to the cabins and RV in prior trips and I was nervous so I "over planned". I started my search the summer prior for the best tent and set it up in our backyard and started playing around with what could fit and what I would like to add. We ended up buying a second tent to accommodate everything. It took a few hours to set everything up, not bad really. I spent another couple hours the next day on little things (like the tv and adding extra power cords, etc) plus grocery shopping took some time too.

The only thing that really took time was setting up the tents and moving things from the van to the tent. Making all the beds took time but the cots were just a simple unfold. The drawers were already packed with clothes before we left and the shelves are just stackable and the tables just unfold.
