Family friendly hotel near Aulani

We hope to return to Aulani next year but may need a hotel for a night or two prior to our stay. I am looking at the North Shore or over near Waikiki. My kids would be 7 & 9 - something with a good pool, near family friendly things. Doesn't have to be downtown - just figured if I have to stay somewhere for a night or two, might as well see what the area has to offer. Any recommendations or places to stay away from? I don't have a price range at this point - nothing outrageous and nothing super cheap. Just a decent pool area and near fun kid stuff.

Thanks!

Try marriott koolina beach club. Its down by lagoon 3 and is close to aulani. Very good pool areas for everyone.

Waikiki doesn't have a lot of great hotel pools as the beach is the main attraction, most are your regular rectangular pool with some loungers. Not anything that a kid would get super excited about.

As far as Waikiki goes, check out the Hilton Hawaiian Village. HHV is the probably the best family hotel in Waikiki. The downside to HHV is its location relative to Waikiki, a bit of walk to get to the heart of Waikiki. However, HHV is more of a resort than anything else you'd find in Waikiki so you wouldn't necessarily need to leave.

Another hotel in Waikiki to consider is Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel. It has a roof top pool. It is not on the beach but directly across the street from the beach. The ocean in front of the hotel has been walled off creating a calm water area. The hotel has a roof top pool but it is fairly standard.

North Shore is more of a vacation rental type of place, Turtle Bay Resort being the only hotel I can think of in the immediate area. I have stayed there and it is awesome but not cheap.

If/when we go back to Oahu we plan to do exactly what you are thinking about, a couple of days in Waikiki or North Shore and then to Ko Olina. I really need to win the lottery so I can travel full time.

Another option is Sheraton Waikiki-it is closer to Waikiki central than Hilton Hawaiian Village. They have a cool pool slide and pool (google the images for Sheraton Waikiki Helumoa Playground-it will give you an idea of what there is) and runs about the same price as HHV. To the best of my knowledge, there are times of the year that HHV doesnt heat their pools so although they look great they are cold. We stayed with our kids at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki when they were about that age and they loved the roof top pool because it is on the second or third level directly across the road from the beach and it is really cool to sit and watch the hustle and bustle of the street and the beach.
These are some of the many options in Waikiki however, last August we stayed at the Marriott Ko Olina and really enjoyed it, just a door or two down from Aulani and I think it also makes a great base from which to explore the island.
