Take Insect Repellant if you're camping at Fort Wilderness!

Just returned from a week of camping at Fort Wilderness! We had a great time, with the exception of one thing--we've returned home with many, many bug bites. The yellow flies are unbelievable (and they hurt when they bite!) but something else ate us alive--I'm thinking it was the no-see-ums. Anyway, take Deep Woods off if you go, and bathe in it--we had some and kept spraying, but the bugs kept finding places we hadn't sprayed!

Another thread spoke of the deer flies (I believe this is our Mississippi version of the yellow flies) being bad this year.

Wow, you must have tasted really good!! :D

We have been going to FW since forever, and at different times of the year and have never been bitten by anything or even seen a mosquito! Of course, I do know some people are like bug magnets and really catch it, but never really heard of anyone else having problems, just someone having an occasional bite.

Sorry you had so many bites, maybe a different time of year there would be less of what really likes you! :goodvibes

I'm hoping they'll be gone by the time I get there, but will still be prepared with lots of Deep Woods Off (not that effective on yellow flies), Hawaiin Tropic sun screen (seems to repel them - they don't like the smell) and my first aid kit to try to combat the swelling/itching if I do get bitten.

I was hoping the weird weather this year brought the population of Yellow Flies down, but I guess not :(

We have been to the Fort a couple of times, but the same time of year (Thanksgiving) but have been to WDW at other times of the year. We never really had an issue with bugs. I suppose because they seem to be so commonplace where we live (NEPA) that maybe we don't notice them. An occasional bug bite is par for the course. Again, however, it's never been so bad to the point where it was "Memorable" enough (even in a bad way).

I think you got it right, they must taste real good. I suppose in some realms that could be a good thing, but in this case, not so much.

We find that a good spraying of Yard Guard around the whole campsite every couple of hours works really well. Also use Citronella candles.

I had the same experience at FW last week! Bites on my legs and feet were huge and swollen for days even though I put cream on them!

Unfortunately, not much helps yellow fly bites once you scratch them and they open :( :(

I read that the best way to keep them from swelling too much and itching a lot is to put alcohol on them as soon as they bite, and then use a long-lasting anti-itch cream or spray. I use Ivy-Dri and it keeps the itching away for hours.

We just returned from FW, and the yellow flies (we called them deer flies) were terrible. I've never seen them this bad.

We were at POFQ and got bitten terribly with the yellow flies, so much greenery and travelled on the boat to DTD quite a lot. They do hurt as they bite, one got me on the foot the morning we left and my daughter has a bite that has come up since returning home. We found the gel in sachets that they have at First Aid in the parks worked best at cooling and helping the swelling.

Budget cut back on bug kill, control????

IMO, vinegar helps with itch better than alcohol. From a many time fire-ant bite recipient.:)

Vinegar is one of those natural remedies that's good for SOOOOO Much stuff, and it tastes good in a salad with EVOO too! :)

I still have red marks on the back of my legs from the flies and we were there back mid April.

the flies were bad on Saturday evening but as the weeks gone on they have gotten better. Its a wonder evening here at the fort. Sambuster

We are planning a outdoor party in July. With all the Texas rains, mosquitoes are going to be in high number. The event planner recommended using dry ice as a mosquito repellent. He said to place dry ice away from site to attract mosquitoes. I've never heard this. Not sure of logistics of using dry ice for this but may be worth a try. :).

We've been here a couple of days now and have not had any issues at the pools or elsewhere.
