Hey guys! I'm a new dvc member as of October 2014 at the GF. I've heard members can book their own home resort 11 months out for other members and vice versa, is this correct? Could one year I swap my GF points for BC or BW if another member and myself were to book resorts for one another?

I'm from the UK and I'm getting confused with the do's and don'ts. Would just like to know if you can swap with other members and how its done.

Thank you!

Can it be done - yes.
You would have to find the other member to trade reservations. Good luck.
There is no orginazed place that I know of for coordinating these type of exchanges.

You probably would be better off just renting out your points and then renting BCV or BWV points from someone else. If you try and do a trade with an owner at those resorts you'll run into discrepancies in points required and timing and just trying to find someone to work with. Or you can attempt to book at those resorts yourself at seven months.

Hi Kim91. We're also in the UK, and have been members for 9 years. Tbh - we've never found it necessary to even think about the possibility of swapping points. Our home resort is SS, which we always book as early as poss so we've got a reservation on the books. Then 7m out we call dvc and change to either BWV, or BCV. Depending on what room type we want we've always got got in where we want. E.g. This year we're at BWV in a 1 bed for 3 wks - visiting during school hols. No problems. We've found that the bigger room you want, the more difficult it is, so if you're after a studio at BCV you should be ok any time. We love DVC, so any other questions let us know! Matt & Pip

Depending on when you want to go and type of room, you may or may not need to swap.

GFV is gorgeous, but requires a lot of points. BCV has overall a nicer feel but there is no view. BCV also has a great pool. From what I understand, BCV availability is limited and very much vied for most of the year (especially studios). It's a calmer resort.

BWV has more availability than BCV, as it's a bigger resort... but it's availability at the 7mo mark also depends on the time of the year (between sept-January, particularly food and wine, as well as first two weeks of December, is limited). Also, if you wanted the std rooms, it is also be harder to come by. Most dvc people like to stretch their points.

1 bds are the easiest to book.

Here's a great overview on booking patterns that drusba posted:

Someday I would be open to swapping but not for a few years. We loooove the boardwalk area and our std rooms/point savers. We just bought at BLT to be at a MK resort, and can't wait to walk to the park. I would like to try GFV someday but maybe when the kids are older or when it's just a couples trip ;).

I'm sure, however, there are people who would love to swap! GFV is the flagship resort!!

Personally I think i'd rather just do home resort stays than do this it seems like an awful lot of work

Probably far too many complexities for a 1-to-1 swap. First and foremost, there's almost no chance that the number of points used by both parties will be identical.

Better off viewing it as two separate transactions. Rent your points out to someone looking to stay at Grand Floridian and then use the proceeds from that transaction to rent another's points for a stay at your desired destination.

Or just look at booking at 7 months. Other than Food & Wine Fest time and early December, Boardwalk isn't all that difficult to get at 7 mos these days.

It's possible but complicated. Renting both ways is often best (and for most other non DVC options) for the quoted situation. Another options is just using your points and renting or receiving a transfer for the other resort. There aren't many options that are difficult enough that the 11 month window is required and for the ones it is, they are often difficult to get even day one 11 months out. Personally I wouldn't make things too complicated, just use your points at VGF and then try for other things at 7 months. You're trading down from VGF to a degree but that ship sailed when you bought the more expensive points. The only way I'd fool with this is if you find a buddy you trust to trade off with so you each get home resort priority for more than what you own.

Thank you! Yes I'll let you know if I have any other questions. It's great talking to another dvc member that's British. Still getting the swing of it, staying at OKW this year- not been here yet but thought as it was the first dvc resort would be nice to stay there for our first stay as dvc members we stayed in SS in 2012- was beautiful!! Thanks again!
